Anthony Franco
6:02
Hey everyone, hope you're doing well! Let's talk offseason before tonight's game
Nolan Arenado
6:02
Where will all the money I left on the table go?
Anthony Franco
6:03
Arenado kind of left money on the table at the end of the deal more than up front
But broadly speaking, the Cardinals are in position to attack free agency this offseason, particularly with the Rockies covering the majority of Arenado's 2023 salary
6:04
I'm skeptical they'll go at the top of the shortstop class, since any of those guys would require a franchise-record deal, but I can kind of see Swanson as a fit if they do
Also think a run at deGrom or Verlander -- high salary, shorter term -- could be a way to capitalize on their near-term spending room
Don Draper
6:04
Besides this last season, the A's made moves in the offseason. Who are some targets the A's might get
Anthony Franco
6:05
Believe they're going to slow-play things again. Young guys they gave auditions to didn't show enough progress this year to see a viable path to contention in 2023
6:06
I think it's mostly bounceback candidates. Gallo or Conforto maybe. Could take a shot on Jeimer Candelario after he's non-tendered. They're in position to promise a rotation spot to a Matt Boyd type
Tom
6:06
Who could the nats fetch for Joey Menesses or luke voit
Anthony Franco
6:07
Not much. Voit probably just gets non-tendered. Meneses is kind of interesting and someone would probably give up a prospect in the 20-30 range of their system for him, but it won't be enough for the Nats not to give him a chance again as the first baseman next season and see if he can kind of repeat it
Miles
6:08
Is there anyway for the Yankees to offload Hicks or Donaldson contract?
Anthony Franco
6:09
They could probably pay Donaldson down from $27MM to like $10MM and flip him somewhere for no return. Is that worth it? I don't know
6:10
Hicks still has three years left at around $30MM total and hasn't been good for two years. I don't think anyone's biting even if you pay down more than half that money
Rangers chat
6:10
When’s the chat? Outlook came out 3 weeks ago
Anthony Franco
6:11
We didn't come up with the idea for the team-specific chats until we were a few outlooks in. We'll make all of them up at some point, probably within the next couple weeks
Junebug12
6:11
Who plays shortstop for Atlanta next year?
Anthony Franco
6:12
Yeah this is a tough one. I think I still lean Dansby but feel less confident in it than I did two months ago
Sean Murphy
6:12
If you had to guess, what team will I be catching for Opening Day?
Anthony Franco
6:12
Guardians
Grayson
6:12
Steve mentioned yesterday that Sean Manaea won't have to settle for a one-year deal. Doesn't he seem like a prime 'one year bounce back type' though?
Anthony Franco
6:13
I wouldn't be stunned if he took like one for 16 and tried to test the market again next year, but he definitely wouldn't have to. There'll at least be three-year deals out there for him, and I think someone might go four
If somebody puts 4/48 on the table or something like that, that's better than the prove-it deal
John
6:14
Santander, Urias, lottery ticket prospect enough for Pablo Lopez?
Anthony Franco
6:14
No
Ooof
6:14
The Offseason Outlook for the Dodgers was interesting, what is the likelihood of the dodgers additions a starters with upside, resigning Kershaw and J Turn and solving there holes left in FA in house?
Anthony Franco
6:15
Not impossible but you're taking a real risk at shortstop that way. Lux probably fits better at second base with some of the concerns about his arm
Ben
6:15
What do you think Verlander's market looks like this offseason?
Anthony Franco
6:16
I think he gets two years at an AAV a bit below Scherzer's but higher than anyone else's in history. Like 2/80
James
6:16
Do you see the braves having interest in Benintendi for LF and do think they are really contenders for deGroom any top tier SP?
Anthony Franco
6:17
Guess I could see them on Benintendi. It's not the cleanest fit around but left field is the one position aside from shortstop (if Dansby walks obviously) they don't really have a definitive in-house option for
6:18
I've never loved them as a suitor on deGrom. Their rotation is already good, and his salary would require them pushing well beyond where they've ever gone payroll-wise. I know Terry McGuirk told the AJC it was going up and they hoped to be among the top five spenders, but deGrom really takes that to another level
Ben
6:18
Do you buy Martin Perez's break out? What do you think his free agency looks like?
Anthony Franco
6:20
I don't really buy it, no, but someone probably will. He's clearly improved -- good ground-ball guy, throws strikes -- but I can't get past the continued lack of missed bats and the fact that he hadn't had a sub-4.00 season since 2013 until this year. He's a #4 starter going forward for me
6:21
Borderline qualifying offer candidate, probably gets three years and a bit above $30M if he doesn't get QO'ed
Joe
6:21
If your a team that needs a SS and cannot afford one of the expensive options, would you throw a few scraps at Cincinnati for Jose Barrero? Or would Kyle Farmer be a better target from them?
Anthony Franco
6:21
I don't see the point for the Reds in giving away Barrero, nor do I think any win-now team is going to see him as a viable everyday shortstop in 2023
6:22
Farmer makes more sense as a trade candidate. Certainly could see the Reds trading him. More of a utility type on a good team than an a regular though
Guest
6:22
What would it cost for the Jays to get both Rafael Montero and Robert Saurez?
Anthony Franco
6:23
Combined, probably $20MM annually for at least the next two years
