Anthony Franco

Hey everyone, hope everything's well!
5:56
Apologies to those of you who thought they were leaving advance questions for Brandon Beachy instead of me
Anyways, let's get started
Reds
5:57
Tejay Antone’s continued injury further heightens the need for the Reds to sign some of these relievers still available to bridge the gap between their three excellent young starters and Diaz.  Any movement in that area or are they still sitting on their hands?
Anthony Franco
5:59
I don't see it. Maybe the prices for one of these guys drops so far they feel like it'll be great value for the deadline and roll the dice. But regardless of whether they had Antone all season, it was likely to be a below-average bullpen on a team that isn't going to contend. Don't think there'll be the same kind of urgency to respond to his injury the same way there might be for a more competitive team
Rangers13
5:59
On 2/15 the Rangers will put B Martin on the 60 day DL list, barring a trade before then who not currently on the 40 man roster do you see TX adding?
Anthony Franco
6:00
Doesn't have to work that way. They can wait until they bring somebody in -- whether one of the platoon outfield options Steve discussed yesterday or just an internal addition to the 40-man -- and put Martin on the 60 at that point
They're not going to add someone to the roster specifically to make sure Martin can go on the 60 when first eligible

With Crochet missing time at the beginning of the year and Hendriks possibly missing the whole season, Ken Giles would be a good get for the White Sox. Do you agree?
Anthony Franco
6:01
Giles is just in minor league deal range. He fits for everybody in that regard, White Sox included
OZ
6:02
Do the Braves go the entire 2023 season with the duo of Vaughn Grissom and Orlando Arcia at short or will they be forced to acquire someone else?
Anthony Franco
6:03
Depends on how Grissom performs right? I think he'll be alright and don't know how many superior shortstops will be available at the deadline
Amed Rosario or Tim Anderson maybe, but that's not happening if either of those teams are in contention
Cub fan
6:03
What would the Blue Jays want from the Cubs for Matt Chapman?
Anthony Franco
6:03
Blue Jays aren't trading Chapman
Sancasteabro
6:04
Do you think that the Mets may have problems with their initial pitching seeing the way they are armed, that is, with two Hall of Fame pitchers (Scherzer and Verlander) but with question marks because of their age, a pitcher not tested in MLB in Senga and a Quintana that we don't know what version of him we will have?
Anthony Franco
6:05
It's an area of the roster with some downside/risk for the reasons you mentioned, but they also have Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi behind them as quality depth options
6:06
I guess it's the area of the roster I'd be most concerned about while still thinking it's going to be fine and the Mets are just going to be really good
John Beresford Tipton
6:06
Do you think it's possible we'll see more QO's for guys like Joc Pederson, at least among big budget teams? It seemed liked a huge overpay, but the Giants were able to sign Pederson for 1 year, and there's value in that. Whether it's an additional $6M, or whatever, in value is the question, I guess.
Anthony Franco
6:07
This has been the case since the QO was implemented though. Not sure why we'd see a sudden spike in them now
6:08
The Yankees didn't QO Jameson Taillon this offseason. Mets passed on one with Taijuan Walker. Big-market teams have more freedom to take risks with the QO but they generally don't love doing it for borderline players
RANGERS FAN

Are you surprised the Rangers haven’t signed or traded for another bat?  Lineup doesn’t seem potent enough for playoffs , yet their public stance is they expect to make the playoffs.
Anthony Franco
6:10
I was convinced they'd add in left field and don't think that ship has sailed, though I'm less confident in them adding there than I was a month ago. The trade market has just been completely frozen, and the remaining free agent options (arguably aside from Profar) aren't great. Could bring in David Peralta but I imagine they were aiming higher a few weeks ago

Spotrac came out with a story with ten extension candidates. Their prediction (10 years, $350m, $35m AAV) for Alonso are well above one idea you posed in the story you posted yesterday (7 years, $166m, $23.7m AAV). There seems to be a wide range on what folks think a/this 1B might be worth. Thoughts on that? Would Alonso receive more on an extension from the free-spending Cohen, or by reaching free agency with other teams in the fold?
Anthony Franco
6:12
I haven't seen the other article you're referencing so I don't want to speak to it beyond saying that obviously it's much higher than I'd expect. I will say that Steve thinks I'm light on Alonso money and wanted me to push him near or past Austin Riley (10/$212M) yesterday
6:14
I don't really see a compelling reason for him to get to Riley (and certainly not Devers) levels since they're comparable hitters, younger and can play third base
John
6:14
Orioles really rolling with Stowers at DH? Not many options left
Anthony Franco
6:16
Think there's an argument for them to roll the dice on a Sanó or Voit to offer some cover for Mountcastle/Stowers and add some power to the bench
Seattle Fanboy
6:16
What is the percent likelihood that Jered Kelenic has an OPS+ above 100 at the end of season?
Anthony Franco
6:17
Like 60%? Minor league production was still really good, gets shielded from LHP a little bit with Pollock around
Don
6:18
Do you think if lightning strikes and Anderson, Elder and Srotka all look good in spring, the Braves can put together an Enticing package for Reynolds
Anthony Franco
6:19
Not with those guys. Pirates aren't going to change their evaluation based on a few spring starts
Jays Fan 92 93
6:19
Are the Jays a better team?  I understand the added defense over offense, but seems like injury risk is higher.
Anthony Franco
6:21
Yeah I think they got a little bit better. Bassitt's an upgrade over Stripling. Varsho vs. Tesocar is interesting for 2023 performance alone. Getting Springer out of center field regularly could keep him a little healthier, Swanson steps in as their second-best reliever
Cash
6:22
What will happen to Jose Iglesias and Elvis Andrus
Anthony Franco
6:22
I think Iglesias takes a minor league deal. Still like Andrus to get a big league contract with a path to SS playing time somewhere

Do you think Lugo will fair well as a starter and if not who of Font, Teheran, Honeywell, Morejon, Groome, etc... do you think starts the most games?
Anthony Franco
6:24
I don't see any reason to think Lugo can't produce at a capable back-of-the-rotation level. Maybe there's an increased injury risk with the workload spike but the repertoire depth and ability to handle LH hitters make me think he'll be fine as a starter if he stays healthy
6:26
Of the depth guys you mentioned, I remain most interested in Morejon. The Tommy John threw him off but I'm still in on him as a potential mid-rotation arm if he gets the chance

The Cubs have a need for a starting 3B.. The Guardians have a need for a co-starting catcher. Would the Cubs / Guardians consider a trade: Gabriel Arias for Miguel Amaya?
