Hey everyone, hope you're all having a good week! Let's jump right into it

Who do the cardinals need to get
Anthony Franco
5:33
Pitching help. High-leverage reliever still feels like the biggest need to me but they'll probably look into the Quintana types at the back of the rotation too with continued uncertainty about Flaherty's health
Bobby Milone
5:33
Do you see Cashman getting players at the deadline or to just stay put?
Anthony Franco
5:33
(Yankees)
5:34
Jon Heyman wrote last week that they're looking into outfield help and that feels like the area they're likeliest to make a splash. Seems like they're (understandably) getting annoyed with Gallo's and Hicks' performances this year and are at least open to the possibility of upgrading there
5:35
I think they'll look for a veteran rotation option as well since it's tough to bank on the top five staying healthy all year. They'll certainly add a couple players to the back of the roster at least, but outfield looks like the place where they're likeliest to make a headline-type move

What’s a realistic return I can expect for Benintendi? Would it be too much to ask for a guy like Groshans? I saw a Yankees scout said he’d give Peraza plus a pitcher but that seems like a lot for just a few monthsof Benny
Anthony Franco
5:36
Yeah I can't see either Peraza or Groshans being out there for a couple months of Benintendi. Tough for me to see anyone giving up a top 100 caliber prospect for pretty much any rental this year, him included
A couple mid-tier types (like 8th and 15th in an average farm system) feels about right to me
Tom

Over/under date for first trade deadline deal of consequence: July 18. What you got?
Anthony Franco
5:37
Hmm, good one. I'll say later
A couple days after the All-Star Break would be my guess
Jed Hoyer
5:37
How much of my current roster will be gone after the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:37
(Cubs)
5:38
A good portion of it. Contreras feels like a lock, I expect Happ to go as well. The bullpen's going to lose a few guys -- Robertson, Givens, I like Effross as a dark-horse trade candidate
Chris
5:38
Do you think Giolito or Marquez could be available if their teams fall out of the race?
Anthony Franco
5:39
No on both accounts
John
5:39
Can Jake Meyers be the Astros long term CF?
Anthony Franco
5:40
Feels like more of an ok stopgap type while he's in his pre-arbitration years than a true building block, but that's still a valuable player to have
Between he and McCormick, it's not really a must-address position. Kick the tires on Bryan Reynolds or Cedric Mullins, sure, but they don't need to make a move for a boring veteran

Could we package one of Mancini/Santander with Jorge Lopez for a better package?
Anthony Franco
5:41
Obviously they could but typically it's easier to break up the deals involving the top trade candidates on a team
5:42
More likely to find one team that really wants a corner bat and another that really wants a high-leverage reliever than it is to find one team that's dying to get both of those things
Rmcgee
5:42
Could you see the Giants trading Joc or Rodon at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:43
They would need to have an awful next few weeks to throw in the towel. They're still only two back in the Wild Card and obviously coming off one of the greatest seasons in franchise history
Much more likely to add another starter and a relief arm or two and try to go for it again

5:43
What do the rangers need
Anthony Franco
5:44
I doubt they'll think in terms of "needs" so much as they'll broadly be opportunistic about adding controllable talent who can help in 2023, kind of as they did over the offseason
5:45
A controllable starting pitcher would be ideal since they're more position player-heavy right now but this isn't a team that's filling out the margins of a 2022 playoff contender

Winker has always been an odd fit for the Mariners. More so when they are at full strength. Do you think there is a legit chance he is moved this month?
Anthony Franco
5:46
Not really, particularly not as they're playing better. Dealing Haniger if they fall out of it feels more plausible than Winker, who's controllable for another year
Tom
5:46
With Cleveland's abundance of good infield prospects they can move, who's the targets they might be after?
Anthony Franco
5:47
Seems like they'll probably poke around the starting pitching market. They'd be a decent fit for Contreras if they're still within three games at the end of the month and can add a couple million to the payroll for the stretch run
Willson Contreras
5:47
Where am I playing after the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:48
Giants remain my guess there
Chris
5:48
We know the Reds are moving Castillo. What are starters you are getting traded as well?
Anthony Franco
5:49
If he's healthy, Montas is a virtual lock to go. There are the back-end rentals on bad teams (Davies, Quintana, maybe Chad Kuhl) who'll move. Angels are probably trending towards flipping Syndergaard and Lorenzen at this point
Martin Perez
5:50
Should I pack my bags?
Anthony Franco
5:50
I'd move Pérez too if I were Texas but there's been enough chatter they'll try to extend him instead I kind of buy it
