Welcome to the Sunday night chat!  Let's take some questions....
Sandy
8:27
10 years 345 gets a deal with Lindor?
Mark P
8:28
I'd imagine that would do it, sure.  But the Mets are going to try to get that number closer to $300MM, so it's just a question of how *much* over the $300MM mark Lindor wants to go
Avila
8:28
How much longer is Al Avila's rope?
Mark P
8:29
I'd imagine at least two more years.  If there isn't significant progress from Detroit's youngsters by the end of 2022, some hard questions will be asked.
Bob
8:29
Thoughts on the Perez extension?
Mark P
8:32
I think it's an overpay, but maybe not a huge overpay.  There was some obvious sentiment between the two sides and the Royals (moreso than most teams) really value the idea of these "lifetime players" who are faces of the franchise.  Plus, the argument can be made that the early-career extension Perez signed was so laughably team-friendly that this future money is still making up for it.
8:33
There's also some symbolic "hey, the Royals are ready to spend" value here from the new owner, as if this winter's moves weren't enough evidence already
THE CONTROL ROOM
8:33
What will the Jays do if their May games can't be played in Toronto?
Mark P
8:35
Continue playing in Dunedin, most likely.  From Mark Shapiro's interview the other day, he seemed to hint that it'll be Dunedin through May, then Buffalo for at least a couple of months.

Seems like the Jays are crossing their fingers that they can get back to Toronto after July 1, but obviously that's a long ways away

Hey Mark, I was wondering why more teams don’t do what the Indians “tried” w/Hand, putting players on outright waivers b4 buying out their option?
Mark P
8:36
Probably because in a situation like that, most teams would have exercised the option and then tried to trade a star closer rather than let him go for absolutely nothing
All the other GMs
8:37
How is the Padres farm system still so highly rated after just trading for Clevinger, Schnell, Darvish, Nola etc??
Mark P
8:37
They had just an extraordinary amount of depth in the minors, and managed to pull off most of those trades without giving up many of their blue-chip guys.  It's a testament to how good a job the Padres have done in drafting and developing players.
Rocky
8:38
I need a good name for my fantasy team, help me out
Mark P
8:40
I'm in a league with a team managed by a Cubs fan that's called "The Velvet Undoerground and Nico," that's my favorite of 2021 so far
George
8:40
Best Opening Day Game?
Mark P
8:41
This season, or ever?  Since it's hard to top Bob Feller throwing a no-hitter on Opening Day 1940
John
8:41
Do the Orioles extend Mancini
Mark P
8:41
The O's don't appear to be in any rush to spend money, so despite how much they like and respect Mancini, I doubt it.
Carpenter no more
8:43
Matt Carpenter has 1 hit in almost 30 trips to the plate in spring training.    The team has reported for 3 straight off seasons that he is working hard to improve his swing, but he gets worse with each passing season.   Will Mo & the Cardinals wise up & just release him & write the $20.5 million dollar check?   Carpenter can't hit, field/cover a position, throw, or run the bases at the major league level. Others that can perform these are still available to fill the infield bench job.
Mark P
8:44
If they're going to just eat the money anyway, there isn't much harm in keeping Carpenter around on the bench in case he does turn things around, or if there's an injury to Goldschmidt or Arenado.

Do you think the Mets will just sign Lindor and let conforto walk because of negotiations with Boras?
Mark P
8:46
As my colleague Steve Adams pointed out the other day, it isn't true that Boras clients "never" sign extensions.  Now, this doesn't mean that the Mets won't do exactly what you propose in extending only one of the two players.
8:47
On paper, it might make more sense to extend Conforto, since if Lindor wants too much money, the Mets can always let him walk and then pursue one of the other star shortstops in free agency next winter
"Can always" is maybe a bit cavalier, not that that would be as easy as pie, but the Mets do have future options
Marlin Super Fan
8:48
Over/Under a .500 record for the Marlins, want your opinion ,not a poll
Mark P
8:49
I think under.  The team has talent but they're in a very tough division.  I think they'd need several of the young guys to all at once break out or keep developing.
Charles Finley
8:49
How do we change baseball so teams like the Tigers don't do what they're doing?  Been steamrolled for 3-plus years, not even competing this year, may or may not actually try next year.....gotta be brutal for their fans.
Mark P
8:51
Not that the Astros and Cubs were the first two teams to ever rebuild, but the fact that those two franchises did the multi-year, scorched-earth rebuilds and ended up winning championships really paved the way for a lot of teams to claim that such a method was the "only" way to properly turn a franchise around.
8:52
Compare it to what Farhan Zaidi is going with the Giants, who seemed like a "scorched-earth" candidate if there ever was one, but Zaidi has instead taken a slower route and at least provided San Francisco fans with some semi-competitive baseball in 2018 and 2019.

Weakest link on the Pirates roster? This mystery team surprises everyone and wins the Central in 2021
Mark P
8:53
I was about to write "hey, stranger things have happened," except that might be the strangest thing that could possibly happen in baseball history
Alex
8:54
chances Yankees and Rockies can do a story deal without Dominguez)
Mark P
8:54
The Yankees wouldn't deal Dominguez for one year of Trevor Story.
White Sox Fan
8:56
Does Andrew Vaughn open the season as the White Sox's primary DH?
Mark P
8:57
I'd lean toward yes, and that becomes a lock if they end up signing him to a pre-career extension.
Kevin
8:58
Jose Rameriz agrees to extension or goes free agent when his contract is up?
Mark P
8:59
Depends what Cleveland offers, and based on past precedent, I kind of doubt they'd offer enough to make Ramirez forego a chance at the open market.  I can't speak to his personal feelings, of course.
