Last weekend was busy with trade deadline fallout, but the Sunday chat is back with flying colors! Let's take some questions...
Cleveland 4 Life
8:12
Potential free agent or trade targets for the indians/guardians in the offseason? Names?
Mark P
8:14
Hard to specify names since Cleveland will be likely again be looking at less-expensive and probably shorter-term options, pretty similar to last winter.  I guess it's possible some more payroll might be available based on a revenue surge of newly-sold Guardians merch, but I suspect ownership sees that new revenue as a way of making up losses from 2020
Cody
8:15
Please tell me the Cardinals will be involved in a stacked SS free agency class. Dejong is not the answer.
Mark P
8:16
Expecting Arenado to try and recruit his pal Trevor, eh?  It isn't out of the question, since DeJong is flexible enough to be moved over to second base and Edman could move into outfield duty or super-util duty.
Trader Jerry
8:16
Does trading away Graveman extend the playoff drought?
Mark P
8:18
Several players have commented over the years on the psychological boost that comes with deadline additions, beyond just the help that comes on the field.  Players often seem to gain extra motivation by knowing that the whole organization is geared up and focused on winning.

Or, you have the Mariners front office, who deals just a huge blow to their team's morale.  I realize that getting Castillo the next day more or less evens things out performance-wise, and Toro has been really good in Seattle.  But it definitely seemed like an odd trade to make, especially since M's players were openly grumbling about it
Verlander
8:19
Assuming things stay same in new CBA, do I take a roughly $20 million qualifying offer from Houston or look for a multi-year deal?
Mark P
8:20
Verlander will still get multi-year offers based on reputation alone, so it's a matter of what he and his reps feel (or know) is out there in free agency.  The money likely isn't an issue for Verlander at this stage of his career --- it's about playing in a winning environment.  If he feels that's in Houston, he could opt to just accept the QO and then work out a longer-term extension.
Farhan
8:21
What will it take to lock up Kris Bryant this offseason?  Over 200M?
Mark P
8:21
That seems like a fair assumption
Billy beane
8:22
are we able to make any additions to our OF? Ramons absence will hurt but I think we have enough in house depth
Mark P
8:23
The problem is, the A's are now essentially back to where they were pre-deadline, except with Marte now filling the role of Laureano.  Granted, Marte is an upgrade anyway (especially if he keeps playing like Willie Mays), but outfield depth was already enough of an issue that Marte had to be obtained in the first place.
Sandy Alderson
8:24
With the 11th pick in the 2022 MLB draft, the Mets select, Kumar Rocker, SP.
Mark P
8:24
I think we can safely rule out this scenario
Avila
8:24
Illitch seemingly green lighted big time spending this winter. Who do we get? Do you believe him?
Mark P
8:25
For context, the comments from Tigers CEO/president Chris Ilitch: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/08/tigers-president-team-could-pur...
8:27
I believe that the Tigers will make some additions this winter, and possibly one bigger-ticket name to sort of announce that they're done rebuilding (i.e. Jayson Werth signing with the Nats back in the day).

Do I see a full-on spending spree?  Probably not, since we don't yet know if Chris Ilitch is as willing to shell out the big bucks as his dad was, but that's more a guess based on lack of info than due to anything the younger Ilitch has done or said

How bout them Phillies?

Braves going to defend their NL east title?

How could the Mets hitting be so bad?

8:28
Prediciton for the outcome of the NL East? Braves and Phillies look strong, Mets are dangerous when 100% healthy
Mark P
8:28
I wouldn't dare make a prediction, since who knows where things could stand even a week from now, let alone in October.

8:29
Why don't teams place a player, who is obviously going to be out a while (Tommy John surgery), directly onto the 60-day injured list? Is there some rule that you have to be on the 10-day injury list before being moved on the 60-day injury list)?
Mark P
8:30
No such rule exists, but such determinations are generally based on when/if a team needs to fill a 40-man roster spot
Glasnow
8:30
Will I ever pitch in a rays uniform again?
Mark P
8:32
It's a legit question, since the Rays don't like paying even for healthy pitchers.  A non-tender seems hard to believe (just because Tampa isn't going to give an asset up for nothing) so a trade might be possible, if another team is willing to give up something of value now in order to have a healthy Glasnow for 2023
Jays
8:33
Jays slightly overpay for berrios? Not by alot, seemed just a touch high unless opinion of Martin has dropped some.
Mark P
8:34
Seems like Woods Richardson's stock had dropped moreso than Martin's, which could be why the Jays were willing to give up such a hefty price.  It's hard to call it an "overpay" per se, since we don't know what other teams were offering, and such a big price tag was likely necessary.  Remember, the Twins didn't have to move Berrios since he is under control for 2022.
8:35
As a Jays fan, I'd feel a bit better about the deal if Berrios signs an extension this winter.  But overall, I still like the move since Berrios is helping the team already and will help next year
Jumbo
8:35
Could Baez sign a pillow contract this off-season or even QO?
Mark P
8:36
Baez isn't eligible for a QO because he was traded midseason.  But a pillow contract shouldn't be ruled out, since right now Baez can't be loving his chances of getting a big contract this winter, especially with all the other good shortstops available

How long will Freddie be out for?
Mark P
8:38
Not more than another day or two, if that.  Appears to be just a minor illness
Re: Nats
8:39
Speaking of the Nats/Werth, do they make a year-to-early move for a shortstop this winter? It's suddenly a big hole in the lineup and there's no one coming through the system anytime soon
Mark P
8:40
That makes sense.  The Nats haven't shied away from big free agent deals, so getting a new star in there would go a long way towards signaling that the team isn't going anywhere
Chaim
8:41
Did I screw up at the deadline, or is this just a bad stretch and we’re going to turn it around and contend for the division?
Mark P
8:42
(Chaim Bloom = Red Sox chief baseball officer)

Boston had more or less everything break right for them in the first four months, so some regression was inevitable.  This regression happening immediately after the deadline is perhaps a coincidence, and it isn't like the team didn't do anything at all (though today's Schwarber news isn't promising).
8:43
It also didn't help the Sox that they've simply been playing some really good teams.  Red-hot Toronto, red-hot Tampa, and a quietly competitive Tigers team that has been very good since May
Cubs
8:43
Was Madrigal a big enough return for 2 years of Kimbrel
