The weekend chat is underway!  Let's take some questions
Orioles
7:53
Its been a rough week. Give me something to help me sleep through the night
Mark P
7:53
Adley Rutschman is tearing up the minor leagues, does that help?
Blue jays fan
7:53
Are there enough games left for the Jays to catch the Yankees or A’s?
Mark P
7:54
Realistically, probably not.  The Jays' problem is not just that they haven't been playing well, but it's also that the A's and Yankees are both red hot.

If you had to predict where kris Bryant signs this offseason would you slightly favor giants ?
Giants fan
7:55
Do you think the odds are in favor of the Giants being able to bring Kris Bryant back on a multi-year deal?
Mark P
7:57
SF is a logical candidate for Bryant on paper, and they clearly like him enough to acquire him at least for the short term.  Whether they like him enough to commit $200MM to him over X number of years is another question, of course.

I'd say the odds are pretty decent the two sides can work something out.  The other added wrinkle is that this will (or should) be Farhan Zaidi's first offseason where big-money free agents will be on the Giants' radar, so it'll be interesting to see how he picks and chooses who to pursue
Alex
7:58
Would any of the big market teams actually agree to lowering the CBT thresholds so significantly, which would significantly impact their flexibility, without demanding something like an amnesty clause?
Mark P
7:59
It's possible, though since most big-market teams would happily embrace the salary restriction created by a lowered CBT threshold, they wouldn't mind.
Cleveland 4 Life
8:00
Thoughts on Triston McKenzie? He had a great outing today and he can be a number 3 in the rotation next season I believe
Mark P
8:00
It looks like Cleveland has developed another really interesting homegrown starter.  McKenzie has been a top-100 prospect for a while now, so the potential was always there
Concerned White Sox Fan
8:01
Do you think the White Sox stick with Cesar Hernandez at 2B next season using his club option or does it make more sense to look for a better 2B in a trade or FA?
Mark P
8:02
Hernandez hasn't looked great with the Sox thus far, but it's a small sample size.  I would lean towards them picking up the option and having 2B accounted for early in the offseason, leaving the front office even with less to do on the position-player side
Roger Dorn
8:03
Do you think the Indians/Guardians will ever retire my number?
Mark P
8:04
Roger Dorn's character arc of "just-retired player who buys a team, then immediately sells team within a few months, remains as GM then returns to the field" is something I wish could happen in real life.
Dorn in general is an underrated part of Major League.  Everything about his character cracks me up.
Rockies Roger
8:06
Is there any real defense for not trading CJ Cron at the deadline?
Mark P
8:06
Nope.  I find it hard to believe that the Rockies would issue a qualifying offer to Cron, since even if they want to keep him, you'd think they wouldn't want to pay him $19MM-ish for a single season.
Nats fan
8:07
Rizzo keeps saying the Nats are gonna be “competitive” again in 2022 despite the recent fire sale, but if he really thinks that’s the case then why would they trade Trea Turner when he’s under contract for next season? That move seems to signal more of a rebuild than a quick reload, does it not?
Mark P
8:08
It seems like the Nationals weren't inclined to sign Turner to an extension, either because they weren't sold him on as a long-term investment, or because they balked at his asking price.  So, they decided to move him now when his value was at a peak.
Tigers
8:09
It's gotta be time for tigers to flip a young sp for a bat right? Like manning for a young controlled bat
Mark P
8:10
The Tigers don't have much in the way of future salary commitments.  I'd recommend just signing someone or taking on a big salary in a trade, rather than giving up a major young arm
Ross Atkins
8:11
Surely both Ray and Semien are looking at 4-5 year deals right? If they leave who do I target to replace them?
Mark P
8:12
It could be that Berrios was acquired partly as insurance if Ray leaves.  But I wouldn't entirely rule the Blue Jays out on either player.  They have money to spend, and Ray in particular had been very complimentary about how the Jays coaching staff has helped him get back on track.
Uecker's Tuba
8:13
Did you see Kolten Wong's ridiculous tag-up score today?
Mark P
8:13
Very cool play, great awareness by Wong to realize he had an opportunity to score there
LA 4 life
8:14
Do u think Max Muncy will be resinged
Mark P
8:14
The Dodgers control his rights through the 2023 season, so there's no immediate worry about him going anywhere.
L Dub
8:15
Mark:Should the Marlins offer up one of their prime young pitchers ( Mayer / Lopez) for a young bat?
Mark P
8:16
According to reports, the Marlins already talked Meyer as part of a proposed deal with the Angels: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/07/marlins-discussed-trades-involv...
In general, such a trade makes a lot of logical sense for Miami.  As much as "you can never have too much pitching," the Marlins have enough of a semi-surplus that moving one notable young arm for a notable bat seems worthwhile
John
8:18
Who wins MVP in the NL? Most unclear winner in a while. Still over a month to go
Mark P
8:18
I tend to think it is still Tatis' race to lose, though the specter of another shoulder injury is never far away.
Best laid plans
8:19
Steve Cohen here. Despite my best efforts do I regret buying the Mets yet?
Mark P
8:19
Nope
Alex
8:21
Which managers do you think are in the most trouble at the moment?
Mark P
8:21
Speaking of Steve Cohen, I don't love Luis Rojas' chances of still being the Mets' skipper in 2022
Texas BB Fan
8:22
The Brewers are looking very scary right now.  Those starting pitchers , bullpen and offense coming on, they are my favs for the WS!!  Do you agree?
Mark P
8:22
I'm not sure if there is a clear #1 favorite for the Series, but Milwaukee is definitely in that top tier.  They're a perpetually underrated team.
