The weekend chat is upon us, just as we have our World Series matchup now settled.
Let's dive into a big bag of questions!
Leo

Is Urshela traded to make room for DJ at third base?
Mark P
7:05
Urshela's ability to play third, shortstop or probably second base (he hasn't played second since 2017 but he could likely still handle the position) makes him a valuable super-utility asset, so I would suspect the Yankees hang onto him.  Even amidst all of Urshela's injuries and an overall down year, he was still almost a league-average hitter

Don’t wanna ask a question in  the chat like this but with the chances of the CBA not getting extended on time. Do you think baseball will be played in 2022. Thanks.
Mark P
7:06
Baseball will be played in 2022.  I can't imagine the owners and players would torch an entire season, since that would be disastrous for the sport.

Whether it's a full 162 or not, however, is still in the air.  I am cautiously hopeful that a work stoppage can be avoided and cooler heads can prevail.....but it's up in the air

What kind of deal could Seiya Suzuki receive if he's made available for MLB? Also, would there be an additional fee that goes to the Japanese team that posts him?
Mark P
7:10
A posting fee would be required, yes.  And contract size would interesting, since Suzuki just turned 27 in August and seems to be in the prime of his career.  A multi-year contract in the $40-$50MM range wouldn't surprise me, and I may even be undercutting his value on the open market.

MLBTR's Steve Adams wrote about Suzuki a few days ago: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/mlb-free-agent-rumors-seiya-suz...

Who do you have winning?
Mark P
7:11
I think I can probably abandon my "Dodgers over Yankees" prediction from the preseason.  My new pick is Houston in six

Penny pinching Yankees won't waste a roster spot on Odor will they?
Mark P
7:12
The Rangers are fully covering Odor's salary, so he's a free asset for the Yankees
7:13
Doesn't necessarily mean he'll be back, since the Yankees would look to upgrade the backup infield role and shop Odor to another team, pitching that free money aspect

7:13
Did the Dodger brain trust torch their pitching in the playoffs?
Mark P
7:15
Since they won in 2020, I can't say the strategy has never worked.  But the Dodgers have been hurt so many times by relying on their starters to suddenly morph into "pitch in any situation" hurlers, and it has come back to bite them on multiple occasions.  Injuries sapped their depth this year in particular, but it's not like the Dodgers were lacking in normal relief pitching options

mark do u think the Braves win?
Mark P
7:16
They could definitely win, no doubt about it.  I favor Houston due to the homefield advantage and I think they're just a slightly better team on paper, but Atlanta could absolutely take this Series just as handily as they took the NLCS and NLDS

Matt Chapman for Jo Adell. Who hangs up?
Mark P
7:17
The Angels.  If they're moving Adell, it is for more than just two years of Chapman
Jon Gray
7:17
Along with someone like Gray (on a high one year deal or lower AAV 3-4 year contract), would it make sense for the Cubs to target a bunch of 1 year guys and go for it? If it all goes wrong, they deal the one year players and further improve the farm system, all while looking competitive on paper for the sake of the fan base.
Mark P
7:18
This isn't far off what the Nationals did last winter, except they had more core talent in place (Soto, Scherzer, Turner, etc.) to augment with those one-year signings.  The Cubs are lacking in those strong building blocks, so if they do decide to contend in 2022, they'd likely have to be more aggressive in acquiring multi-year players

Mark: Good Evening. In your opinion would the Marlins offer up Sandy Alcantara for the right piece?
Mark P
7:20
If another team swooped in with a giant offer, the Marlins would surely give it a hard think.  But it seems like Alcantara is the pitcher the Marlins are more interested in keeping as a cornerstone, and the two sides have already been in extension talks
Free Agency
7:21
Will Castellanos end up back in Chicago?
Mark P
7:22
Castellanos would be about a 95% perfect fit for the White Sox, with five percent docked just because he isn't the left-handed bat that they would probably prefer.  The Sox should definitely look into him this winter, but as for the Cubs, I still have doubts they'll be looking at players in Castellanos' price range

This off season seems odd.  We always seem to have managers fired but this year we seem to have a myriad of coaches and minor league staff plus so many office/field staff.  any idea of why this season is so different?
Mark P
7:24
It hasn't struck me that there has been an unusual amount of coaching or organizational moves.  Maybe on the minor league side, just because teams are still adjusting to the smaller amount of teams (and thus a need for fewer positions)

Are either Mondesi or Torres available in trade?  who would be a better choice for Angels to look at to fill their SS needs?  Allowing them to try and acquire more Pitching, Max, J Gray and S Gray.....  Then Bullpen
Mark P
7:26
Gleyber probably shouldn't be regarded as a shortstop anymore, so he'd be an imperfect answer to the Angels' needs (unless they moved Fletcher to SS and used Torres at 2B).

The Royals would likely be open to at least listening about Mondesi considering his injury history and Bobby Witt's impending debut, but KC would still want a good return in any trade.  Also, if you're the Angels and have already been burned by so many injuries in recent years, trading for Mondesi is a pretty big roll of the dice

Have you ever been to a world series Mark?
Mark P
7:27
I haven't, no.  I would've attended had the Blue Jays made the Series in 2015 or 2016, but c'est la vie.
Tim
7:27
do you think Scherzer would have pitched Sunday night?
Mark P
7:28
Knowing how competitive Scherzer is, if he was in any way physically able to pitch, he would've been on the mound for a Game 7

What kind of contract does Starling Marte get? 4-years/$72M?
Mark P
7:31
According to midseason reports, Marte was looking for something around $50MM over three or four years in an extension from Miami.  Given how that ask happened before he tore things up in Oakland, it's safe to guess Marte's price tag has gone up to around the $70MM mark
While Marte is 33 now, I think there's still a good chance he can land such a deal, given the lack of true center fielders on the free agent market
Sisko
7:32
How much money did Eddie Rosario just make? What kind of deal is he looking at if he keeps this up?
Mark P
7:33
I don't think teams will necessarily overreact to a pretty small sample size.  But, Rosario should indeed find a multi-year contract, probably in the $25MM range

What would it take for the Tigers to get Paul DeLong from the Cardinals?
Mark P
7:34
That would be an interesting fallback option for Detroit if one of the big free agent shortstops wouldn't be obtained.  However, if the Tigers strike out on the big names, I can see them allocating their big spending at other positions and perhaps giving prospect Ryan Kreidler a shot at shortstop
