Live from New York*, it's Chaturday night!  Let's dive into some questions

*= my apartment, which isn't in New York
Seattle Mariners
9:02
We are finishing the season 120-42, right?
Mark P
9:02
That depends, so the M's have any games left against the Orioles?
Cody
9:02
Would Carlson, Walker, Liberatore, Winn and Graceffo be enough for the Cardinals to land Soto?
Ryan
9:02
Abrams, Gore, Hassell, Campusano and Grisham. Is that a decent start for a Soto trade on the Padres end?
hllywdjff
9:02
Kirby Hancock Kelenic Marte for Soto who says no?
Mark P
9:05
Gee, guess what the big topic of today's chat queue is!

Today's news is more or less the Nationals saying "hey, let's talk" to any team interested.  Now, it remains to be seen if a trade of what magnitude (which will include a lot of moving parts, multiple prospects, and a lot of legwork done by the Nats' scouting staff and front office) can be completed by August 2.  But, I would imagine that any team even kinda deep in prospects will be giving the Nats a call.

And yeah, all of those trade packages would be in the ballpark of what Washington is looking for.  But maybe only "in the ballpark," even as overwhelming as those offers are in general
Ty France
9:05
Why am I not an allstar?
Mark P
9:06
Not everyone can make it, unfortunately.  France's missed time on the IL hurt his case

9:07
Brewers need offense and Huira was hitting and sent down. I know his strikeouts where off the charts but he has nothing left to prove at AAA. Can he net us  CF?
Mark P
9:07
I think multiple teams would have interest in Hiura as a post-hype prospect/change of scenery candidate
Ryan
9:08
Orioles end masn dispute for soto
Mark P
9:08
Ha, now that would be a creative trade offer!  But, given all the bad blood, the O's are probably the last team Washington wants to deal with
John
9:09
What’s realistically gonna happen for the Orioles this deadline? Any chance they actual only buy? You like the Blake snell ideas floating around? Will they use prospects to fill some holes?
Mark P
9:09
The Snell idea is interesting, except we still don't know what the Orioles' payroll situation is.  The team has been cutting and cutting, but we don't know if it's just part of the rebuild strategy, or if it could be due to pandemic-related revenue losses.
9:10
If the latter, ownership might not be interested in taking on any notable salary just yet.
Guille
9:11
Hey I know I ask this on almost all chats, but, can we have any idea what happened to Jarrod Dyson? He's one of my favorite players ever.
Mark P
9:11
No word on Dyson since he entered free agency last winter
Jaxon
9:13
Who will be the #1 pick in tomorrow"s draft?
Mark P
9:14
Hard to say, since the Orioles have been pretty quiet about the situation other than to say that they're considering 5-6 players.  (So, not much info.)

It could be they're seeing which of those six are willing to sign for the furthest below slot, given their strategy in the last couple of drafts
Soto’s Unwritten $500M Check
9:14
You really picked a bad day to do a chat. But… Bello, Meyer, Yorke?
Mark P
9:15
Well, tomorrow night is the draft, and it'll be even busier then.  So, Saturday night it is.

And anyway, the Nats will want more.  That's a big offer for Boston to make, but again, we're in uncharted territory here for trade asks.
JoseQuintana
9:16
Am I killing my chances of being traded?  I admit that I have not looked,so,good lately
Mark P
9:16
I'm pretty sure Quintana gets moved, but not for a big return or anything
Jayce Hosmer
9:17
Does it even make sense for any contender beyond big market teams to go for Soto? Seems to go against every aspect of what makes teams like the Rays, Padres, Mariners etc etc work with such imbalanced pools of capital. Sure there’s the capital represented by their ability to develop prospects, but other than the padres (between two players anyways) these teams aren’t handing out half billion dollar contracts. Look how well it’s work out for the angels.
Mark P
9:19
If you're not a "big market" but have enough prospect depth to make a realistic run at Soto, it might be worth it anyway.  Even if you don't think you can sign him to an extension, having Soto for three postseason runs gives you three shots at a ring, and flags fly forever

9:19
Soto and  Corbin  for  walker and prospects?
Mark P
9:21
I don't see the Cardinals taking on that much salary.

....but other teams with more payroll space or no cares about the luxury tax might be open to taking on Corbin's contract.  That would be an interesting factor in trade talks, even if the Nats might not want to lessen an A++ trade package just to save some money

9:22
I don't see why all the Matt Carpenter talk is necessary, he's having a good month, so what? - Rangers fan
Mark P
9:22
A "good" month?
AA
9:23
I think I’ll trade for Soto, under the radar out of nowhere!
Mark P
9:23
As stealthy as Anthopoulos is, I have a hard time seeing the Nats trade Soto to an NL East team

9:25
BTW, love coming to these live chats!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Mark P
9:25
Thanks!
Trey Mancini
9:25
What team will I be on August 1st?
Mark P
9:26
The deadline isn't until August 2, so probably the Orioles

But in general, I suspect the Mets might wind up with Mancini, aided by the Showalter connection
Tom
9:27
The Phillies offense needs help. Who are realistic targets to help bridge the cap until Harper and Segura are back?
Mark P
9:29
Infield help to replace Didi, or maybe the plan is to have Stott move back into the everyday shortstop role once Segura is healthy
9:30
Maybe a multi-positional player that could be bounced around the diamond, giving the Phillies phlexibility once Harper and Segura did get back.  Having a guy who could be a viable option at 3B, say, gives the Phillies some leverage in deciding what to do with Bohm
Ross Atkins
9:31
I usually wouldn’t expect the Blue Jays front office to do something like this, but do you think Bo Bichette could be the centre piece (plus prospects) of a Soto trade? As a lefty fits the order in the #2 spot much better and if they think the team needs a real shakeup that’d certainly be one way to do it
