Weekend chat time!  Fire away with your questions, while we wait for the queue to fill up....

Michael Lorenzan a good fit for the Orioles?
Mark P
8:20
I don't think he'll cost too much, and I can see another team giving him another shot as a SP, this season's injury and lackluster results notwithstanding.  Baltimore is as good a fit as any.
Champdo
8:21
So how do you think the Tigers approach the offseason?
Mark P
8:22
Their next GM has a tall order ahead of them, and the lineup should be the first order of business.  A case can be made that the heavy lifting might not really come until the 2023-24 offseason, as a new GM might take next year to evaluate what the team really has with everyone healthy (or at least healthier).

But in the interim, adding some pop to the batting order is the obvious call.

How deep do you think we could go into the postseason? Good pitching,  clutch hitting, sound defense, it's all very exciting!
Mark P
8:24
Guardians have been playing well lately, and my suspicion that they'd be playoff contenders is looking pretty astute!

"Hey Mark, wasn't Detroit your preseason pick to win the AL Central?"

Uh.....be quiet!

Any chance I re-sign Trea Turner or are the rumours true that he prefers to play back east?
Mark P
8:26
Can't rule out the Dodgers for any big-money free agent, but LA has been pretty pick-and-choose about which of their stars have been retained over the years.  If Turner was to leave, the Dodgers could turn to any of the other shortstops available on the market, perhaps at a lesser price

What team do you think Sean Murphy gets traded to this offseason? Cleveland seemingly resolved its catching issues with Bo Naylor rocketing back up the prospect lists.
Mark P
8:29
The Guardians, Red Sox, Tigers, Cardinals, Brewers, Rays, Mets, and maybe the Yankees all make sense as Murphy suitors this winter.  I wouldn't rule Cleveland out since it's possible Naylor could be a trade chip in another deal, but with all this extra competition in the offseason market, the Guards' best chance at Murphy might've been at this past deadline.
Also, let's not forget that it isn't a sure thing Murphy is dealt this offseason, giving his remaining years of control.  He doesn't have the ticking clock that the Athletics' other recently-traded stars had

Is there a scenario where you see the Yankees missing the playoffs all together?
Mark P
8:31
That would take just about the biggest collapse in baseball history, so no, I'm not seeing it happening.
Nick Krall
8:31
I don't think Krall gets enough credit for restocking the Reds farm into a well-rounded upper tier system that is positioned to contribute as soon as 2024 when the reds have zero long-term contracts.
Mark P
8:32
The Reds did well with their trades on paper, but the proof will be if some/any of these prospects end up living up to their promise.

Miachel Comforto an option any contender is thinking about now that the QO penalty is removed or is he not getting signed till the off-season?
Mark P
8:34
It's been over a month since our last update on Conforto, and while he was getting some interest in the immediate aftermath of the draft, there hasn't been anything new since.

By this point, there really isn't much time remaining for Conforto to sign and get ramped up via minor league rehab or games.  You figure he'd need at least a few weeks of work considering he hasn't played in almost a full year

Is Santander more likely than not to be traded this offseason?
Mark P
8:35
As we saw at the deadline, the O's haven't moved away from their bigger picture plans of rebuilding the club and adding younger talent.  However, given how Santander is still a controllable player and given how well he has played, the chances are much greater than he'll still be in Baltimore come 2023

Do you see any freddie freemon type player the rays might target later into this upcoming offseason
Mark P
8:38
If anything, such a splashy move might be even more likely, given that the Rays will have a lot of money (Kiermaier, Zunino, Kluber) all coming off the books.  As per Roster Resource, the Rays have less than $22MM committed to next year's payroll, but with a huge arbitration class that will take up a lot of that space.  You can't rule Tampa out of clever trades and maneuvers, however, and actually landing a notable free agent or (maybe more likely) trade target isn't out of the question

Bigger surprise: the play of Pujols or Lars Nootbaar?
Mark P
8:39
Don't the Cardinals have at least one random homegrown player suddenly emerge for them every season?  So Nootbaar is no surprise, in that context.
Pujols
8:39
Say if Pujols ends the season with 698 HR, is there precedence for signing contracts per game until he gets 700?
Mark P
8:40
Pujols said just yesterday that he's definitely retiring, no matter where he is in the record books.

In Ichiro's last season, it was pretty widely known that his "one-year contract" was really just for the Mariners' season-opening series in Japan, and he even announced his retirement before the last game of that series was even over.

Your personal favorite little league moment. You do the best chats, Marky mark!
Mark P
8:43
I didn't actually play proper "little league," as I didn't start playing baseball until I was a teenager (in a house league with my friends).  Highlights of this HOF career included....

* a "home run" made possible by three errors by the opposing team as I lumbered around the bases
* faking getting hit by a pitch, in order to get on base
* catching a fly ball by accident, as I thought the ball was sailing foul, but it fell in my glove as I randomly stretched out my arm

Do you think Austin meadows would be a good fit and potentially bounce back in ATL if they were to trade for him?
Mark P
8:44
Given how every struggling outfielder seems to bounce back after being dealt to the Braves, Meadows would probably hit 35 homers if he was dealt to Atlanta
Jeff
8:44
Albert Pujols: over/under 699.5 home runs at the end of the season?

Are the Braves possibly setting themselves up for failure with all these extensions? It seems they did the same thing just before they started their rebuild in 2014.
Mark P
8:48
So many of Atlanta's players have already proven themselves at the MLB level, however.  They seem like surer bets than locking up only early-career prospects, for instance.  Plus, the total dollars on many of these deals isn't all that much, comparatively speaking....since the Braves now seem to have a lot more payroll flexibility, it shouldn't be an issue unless literally all of them struggle, or unless other players (from the farm system or acquired elsewhere) can't contribute

8:49
Are the Rangers going to spend big this winter?  Ray Davis came out and said he's tired of losing and he wants to win right now.
Mark P
8:50
I don't think there was any question that the Rangers were going to be aggressive again this offseason, and the recent firings only underline the lack of patience from ownership.

If you're a Texas fan, you should maybe be a little concerned about the way those firings happened (with Chris Young apparently not getting a heads-up he was now the PBO), but still, the Rangers are definitely planning to contend

8:51
Cavan Biggio seems to be a trade candidate this winter. Am I wrong to think that?
Mark P
8:52
His value has heavily dropped to the point where the Jays could shop him but probably not get much back in return.  That might not be an issue, however, since it doesn't seem like Biggio is in the Jays' future plans

Do Royals chase after pitching this off season knowing that the hitters have already arrived? I think Royals had hoped their group of pitchers would have been ready by the time the hitters arrived but only Singer has broken through.
