The Weekend Chat is upon us!  Let's take a minute for the questions to roll in, and then we'll begin....
Robert
8:21
When will the first big name sign?
Mark P
8:23
Tough beat for Clayton Kershaw or Edwin Diaz to not be considered big names....

In all seriousness, it's hard to say, since the bigger names tend to want to explore their options.  It's possible Pederson accepts the qualifying offer, if that counts

Would vaughn grissom be a good starting point for corbin burnes?
Mark P
8:25
That would certainly help spark trade talks.  It isn't yet clear how open the Brewers would actually be to moving Burnes (or Woodruff), and it's worth nothing that Atlanta's farm system is now a little thin due to trades and graduated players like Grissom

Is there realistically any chance Judge signs with anyone else?
Mark P
8:26
Other than the Yankees?  Sure.

is Nimmo to the Rays realistic scenario? Jon heyman said to watch out for them. Also, kind of 2 questions. Does Jon Daniels being hired there increase the chance of Joey Gallo signing there? The rays have been tied to him since 2015 via trades.
Mark P
8:28
A lot of players have been with Texas over Daniels' long tenure, so I wouldn't go overboard with linking a lot of ex-Rangers to Tampa just because of Daniels' new role.  Besides, AJ Preller had first dibs on ex-Rangers anyway.  :)

Nimmo would be a surprising add to the Rays, but not necessarily shocking.  As we saw with their Freddie Freeman interest, the Rays are willing to at least consider a splashier move.

Does Dombrowski get creative with any big trades this offseason, or does he just keep together most of this Phillies team that made the World Series and supplement with free agent signings?
Mark P
8:29
I'd never rule Dombrowski out of any big move.  The emergence of Marsh, Stott, and Sosa helps solve some big problems for the Phillies, but I can still see them landing a big infielder as Segura's replacement.
8:30
Or at least one frontline pitcher for the rotation

Any chance the Yankees go for trea turner. Great contact guy for that lineup and does everything well.
Mark P
8:31
Unless the plan has changed in the wake of another disappointing season, the Yankees are still sold on Anthony Volpe as the shortstop of the future.  A big free agent like Turner might be open to changing positions in the right circumstance, but "move off shortstop for this kid who has never played in the majors" might not be such a circumstance

What players we can expect to accept the QO?
Mark P
8:32
I think Pederson is more likely than not to accept.  Martin Perez, Tyler Anderson, and even Eovaldi are candidates as well, but if I had to make a firm pick, I'd guess just Pederson

at the tail end of Heyward contract, am I too scared to snag an SS if contract length goes 6+ w/ no team options?
Mark P
8:33
One bad contract shouldn't scare a big-market team (or any team, really) away from ever signing another pricey long-term deal in the future.
Who says no?
8:34
Marcelo Meyer for Corbin Carroll
Mark P
8:35
Arizona, since Carroll is ready now and Meyer is still a year or two away.  The D'Backs also have Jordan Lawlar in the wings at shortstop

Any chance there’s something MLB can do to make free agency more exciting like it is in the NBA and NFL where once they are able to guys start signing immediately?
Mark P
8:37
I prefer the "longer" offseason, since it means a big move can happen at pretty much any time.  In other sports, 80% of the big signings happen in the first two days of free agency, leaving to a long lean period for the rest of the offseason.  That isn't great if you, say, work for a sports rumors website.

What would your Guardians offer for Sean Murphy look like?
Darren
8:37
What do you think it would take for Cleveland to acquire Murphy? Is at least one of Espino, Williams, Bibee or Valera as a headliner mandatory to get the deal done? Do you see Cleveland being willing to pay that price? Thanks
Mark P
8:38
If I'm the Guardians, I do everything I can to keep Espino out of the package.  The A's would want something like Valera and one of Bibee or Williams, plus more

8:39
Urquidy and a prospect for Grichuk and Cron? If not, what could get a deal of this ilk done for either side?
Mark P
8:41
The Rockies would be the one adding a prospect to that pretty blah trade package, not Houston.  Three years of Urquidy is far, far more valuable than one year of Cron and one year of Grichuk.
Southside Forever
8:42
is Abreu gone?
Mark P
8:42
It seems to be trending in that direction, since the Sox are ready to go with Vaughn at first base
I'm surprised, since Abreu seemed like a White Sox lifer
Bryce Harper
8:43
Does Hoskins stay or go? He is an inconsistent, streaky hitter even though he puts up good numbers by the end of the season.
Mark P
8:44
Hoskins still stands out as a reasonable trade chip for Philly.  Bohm can be moved to 1B, Sosa or Stott (or a new addition) can play third base.
Hoskins having only one year of control remaining limits his value, but he's a productive hitter and power isn't easy to come by

What happened in Houston with the GM. Do you think the real story ever comes out.   Any ideas where he lands.
Mark P
8:46
Seems like we already know the "real story," which is that Crane and Click just never really seemed on the same page.  Remember, Crane didn't want to make a GM change in the first place, and might've seen Click as something of a placeholder no matter how well the team performed

Any chance that Votto is moved? Could see another mariners/reds trade. Especially if the M's don't want to pay Turner the $$$
Mark P
8:47
Votto has a full no-trade clause, so unless he changes his stance on playing in Cincinnati for life, he's staying put

8:48
Will any free agents want to play here given the uncertainty with ownership?
Mark P
8:49
For big-name free agents looking for long multi-year contracts, the ownership question is a bigger obstacle.  If you're more of a normal FA looking for a job on a one-year contract, it shouldn't be a huge issue.

For the love of all things sacred in the World, please explain why the Cardinals haven't already shot down the idea of Contreras at catcher next year. Why would they even consider a 30+ year old, hitter first (barely) catcher who isn't great at catching? Murphy is heading to the Lou, right?
