It's time for the Weekend Chat, as it might be best to get some questions in now just in case the deluge of moves starts tomorrow on Winter Meetings Eve.

Are the mariners going to ever sign a free agent bat again or are they only going to trade for hitters?
Mark P
9:39
As long as they're acquiring new hitters, does it really matter if it comes via trade or signing?  Seems to me that getting Hernandez for spare parts and Wong for an expendable piece in Winker was a pretty nice set of moves.

Do I go 9 years for Judge and outbid SF?
Mark P
9:42
If the Yankees' last offer was eight years and $300MM, this could be Judge's way of saying "hey, make that nine and $337.5MM, and I'm back in the pinstripes."

Whether the Yankees are willing to go to quite that level to sign Judge is anyone's guess, and in my view they should be.  And, it would be interesting to see if the Giants (or a mystery team?) are aggressive enough to bid even higher

What's my ERA in 2023?
Mark P
9:43
Given the Rays' work with pitchers, if you told me right now that Eflin was a top-10 in Cy Young voting next year, I wouldn't be shocked.

But, I think he'll be a solid arm in the 3.30 ERA range, if healthy.

Does Reynolds theoretical availability hurt Arizona’s chance of maximizing their return in a trade for their outfielders?
Mark P
9:43
Maybe, though for as much as the D'Backs would naturally want for their outfielders, it would still be lower than Pittsburgh's sky-high asking price for Reynolds

Does missing out on DeGrom open an opportunity for the Mets to pursue Judge?
Mark P
9:45
It would be an amusing coda on the "are the Yankees and Mets colluding over Judge?" discussion if the Mets actually did go out and sign Judge, but I doubt it happens.

Assuming the rangers add another pitcher or two and a bat, does that make them World Series contenders?
Mark P
9:46
They've still got some real work to do to catch up to the Astros or even Seattle.  Unless the other pitcher or two are Verlander and Rodon, and "a bat" is Judge, the Rangers are still quite a ways away from contending for a title

Dansby?

No, I'm Mark

Are the O's actually in on Rodon or are they just doing their due diligence? Do they like Bassit or Evoldi as another option?
Mark P
9:48
Rodon makes sense for an Orioles team looking to both win now, and over the next 4-5 years.  In theory, signing him would be like the Cubs signing Lester, as sort of the "hey, we're back, and we're serious" type of move
If they're looking at Rodon, it would make sense that they're exploring Bassitt and Eovaldi in at least a due-diligence way

Realistic chances Reynolds is dealt? Hearing the ask is high, but given his affordability and what FA’s are going for, who will part with prospects?
Mark P
9:50
On paper, nothing about Reynolds' trade request materially changes things for the Pirates.  They're not going to suddenly lower their asking price in trade talks since Reynolds doesn't really have any leverage.  If another team meets that big asking price, the Bucs will make a move.....if no team steps up, Reynolds remains in Pittsburgh

Do the Brewers trade Winker within 72 hours?
Mark P
9:51
A flip would be interesting, but I see Winker as a good bounce-back candidate now that he's back in the NL Central
Rangers fan and you never answer my question
9:51
Chris Young in for another starter?
Mark P
9:52
Today is the day for your question to be answered!

I don't think the Rangers are done yet, and Young has implied as much.  Acquiring another quality starter strengthens that rotation even moreso

Does Texas really have a plan or do they just like spending money?
Mark P
9:53
I mean, "our pitching isn't good, let's sign Jacob deGrom" is a pretty straight-forward plan to me.
Skydome.

With the Brewers saying they aren’t trading Burnes or Woodroof and the Pirates saying they aren’t trading Reynolds, who do you see the Jays matching up with in a deal for one of their catchers?
Mark P
9:55
D'Backs, Twins, Guardians, Cardinals, Marlins, maybe the Astros.....maybe even the Rays or Red Sox, though I'm doubtful about an inter-division trade.

which big $ free agent is the most likely to sign with the dodgers? Friedman loves short term deals so maybe JV?
Mark P
9:55
Verlander would seem like a perfect candidate for one of the Dodgers' beloved short-term, high-AAV contract.
Frank
9:56
Your thoughts on Brian Reynolds’s trade request
Mark P
9:57
It seems like he wasn't pleased by the Pirates' lowball extension offer, and maybe after two years of trade rumors, just wants some kind of resolution to the whole thing.
Again, Reynolds doesn't have much or any leverage to actually force a trade.
Ed
9:57
Any chance the A’s take on some smaller bad contracts to buy prospects?
Mark P
9:58
It would depend how small "smaller" is, since the A's don't seem willing or able to spend anything
Rangers (Pick me!)
9:58
Do we shock the baseball world for a second straight offseason and double dip on aces by signing Rodón?
Mark P
9:59
I actually had Texas signing both Rodon and deGrom in the free agent picks contest, on this very "double dip" logic.  At worst, I figured I'd get at least one of the two picks right, and I was correct!

Haven’t heard the Brewers mentioned as a possible trade partner for Sean Murphy.  You think they may be in on him- or do they go with Vazquez, or resign Narvaez?
Mark P
10:00
Brewers make sense for Murphy, though their minor league system isn't very deep

Why does it appear Yankees have no interest in Taillon
