Mark P
7:47
After another weekend of baseball, let's take some questions!
JB
7:49
What is up with Jose Abreu?
Mark P
7:50
Abreu is a bit of a slow starter, though this year's slow start may be exacerbated by a new team, new environment, etc.

I'm not all that worried about Abreu over two weeks, he'll surely pick it up
Pedro Grifol
7:50
So Tony said it was rough around here, but are we really this bad again?
Mark P
7:51
This is definitely confirmation bias on my part since I wasn't high on the White Sox going into the season, but this slow start has already revealed a lot of the cracks in the roster.
Austin
7:51
So turns out that Sean Murphy guy is actually pretty good huh?
Mark P
7:52
Hot take!  Turns out that there was a reason half the league was trying to trade for the guy
Bernie Brewers
7:54
Are Brewers for real...even without Woodruff?
Mark P
7:55
Losing Woodruff for what looks like a couple of months is a big hit to the team, no doubt.  But the Brewers have the depth to at least tread water pitching-wise until Woodruff is back, and the youngsters seem to have really sparked the lineup.
7:56
If the Brewers have been able to stay in contention with excellent pitching and generally so-so hitting for years, it stands to reason that they can make do with only "pretty good" pitching and above-average hitting
Jack
7:56
Can we go ahead and give the AL Cy to Luis Castillo? Sheesh, he has been lights out.
remarcable
7:57
Cole has looked stellar.  Has he benefited from not being able to dwell on bad pitches. Last year one bad pitch seemed to send him in a spiral
Mark P
7:58
Two early favorites for the AL Cy here, no doubt.
Michael
7:58
Brandon Marsh has look phenomenal.  He’s walking more too.  Buying the breakout?
Mark P
7:58
Yep. That Phils/Angels trade is looking more and more like a smart move by both teams, and in Philly's case, Marsh might be the instant solve for their CF problem
Awards voters
7:59
If Adley can continue at a similar pace and plays less games due to his position, would voters consider his value as an elite backstop or are they too shallow and it's just too hard to give catchers MVPs?
Mark P
8:01
If anything, Rutschman's ability to contribute as a catcher might be a point in his favor.  It is true that not many catchers have won MVPs in recent years (Posey, Mauer, Pudge Rodriguez are the only ones that come to mind from the last couple of decades), but Rutschman certainly looks like he might be a candidate down the road
Guest
8:02
Jorge Mateo is 4th in the AL in OPS, leads league in steals, and plays stellar defense. Is he a trade candidate with the Os loaded farm, or is he the real deal in the making?
Mark P
8:04
Obligatory "small sample size" alert, since I'm pretty sure Mateo isn't going to be a 1.000 OPS player all year.  But if you're the Orioles, no reason to not keep playing him, especially since Henderson hasn't gotten going
Ken
8:04
When does Mark Kotsay lose his job? I get the A's are bad, but this is another level.
Mark P
8:05
I don't see how the A's mediocre roster construction is Kotsay's fault.  It's hard to really gauge his job as a manager since he has had nothing to work with
Dr. Nick
8:06
It seems like there are more injuries this year than past seasons.  What is going on?  Are players made of glass?
Mark P
8:07
Hi Dr. Nick!

It seems like every year, someone posts "it seems like there are more injuries this year than past seasons."  2023's injured list doesn't seem overly long to me
dodgers
8:08
how does this team shakeup what seems like a mediocre offensive lineup? potential trade or call ups and potential guys to get cut
Mark P
8:09
Overall the Dodgers aren't hitting that badly, but it's just that Betts and Freeman have only been ok instead of their usual superstar level, and guys like Taylor, Rojas, and Peralta have been ice cold.
8:10
My guess is that things normalize pretty quickly, but you wonder if the Dodgers might make some kind of addition to shortstop if Taylor or Rojas can't get going
StanMan
8:11
Yankees keep getting hit with injuries and the depth isn't great. Without significant health improvements what is the worst-case scenario you can see for the Yanks?
Mark P
8:12
The "worst case" is that they miss the playoffs, but c'mon, these are the Yankees.  Even with their injuries so far, they're still 10-6 since the team has so much premium talent.
Adell
8:13
Is it Finally time to be traded for a RP?
Mark P
8:15
Adell is shredding up the minors, and you want to trade him for only a reliever?  After three years of Adell trade speculation, come on now, aim higher than that!

In all seriousness, with Ohtani and Renfroe both free agents after the year, moving Adell might not be in Anaheim's plans
Billy Santo
8:16
Just me or are the Cubs actually moving in the right direction?
Mark P
8:17
The Cubs have added enough talent over the last year-plus that it isn't surprising they're playing better.  Frankly, there's no reason they shouldn't be better after investing in Swanson, Stroman, Suzuki, Taillon, etc.
Bryan Reynolds
8:17
What does it take for me to sign? I’m fine with term and money but I want to leave my options open. What’s the compromise here?
Mark P
8:18
It's tricky, since I can totally understand why Reynolds has some hesitation about locking himself up to a Pirates team that has shown only sporadic interest in spending and trying to win.
8:19
It does seem like there's some kind of compromise to be found here, perhaps with a vesting option of some kind to trigger an opt-out clause, or perhaps a partial (not a full) no-trade clause
KC24
8:20
When Harris gets healthy the starting LF will be A)Rosario/Ozuna. B) Hilliard. C) Grissom. I feel this is the only real key position we are missing at this point
Mark P
8:21
For all of the questions received in these chats about what the Braves are going to do with left field or DH, it kind of obscures the fact that the team is loaded at every other position.
Ben Cherrington
8:22
If my Pirates are in the race come trade deadline, will we be buyers?
Mark P
8:23
Yes, but in limited fashion.  The Pirates aren't going to suddenly go all-in on a playoff push and risk setting back their development.  I can see them making a lower-level trade or two to add depth, but nothing headline-grabbing.
Marlins man
8:24
Can Luis Arraez hit .400 over the whole season?
