It's the first Weekend Chat of the second half, which tracks since....uh, well, it's the first weekend since the All-Star break.  Cold logic!

Let's take some questions....
Dan
8:59
Do you think Dave Dombrowski could take a big swing at this deadline?
Mark P
9:00
Dombrowski had great success in getting semi-modest acquisitions last year (Marsh, Sosa, Syndergaard, Robertson) rather than a single big splash, so I wonder if he'll look to spread around his trade assets again
Logan
9:00
What do the Cards have to give up for Logan Gilbert
Mark P
9:01
A ton, for a controllable (through 2027) pitcher that looks like a mid-rotation arm at worst.  Probably a lot of teams would love to pry Gilbert away from Seattle, except there isn't much incentive for the M's to make a deal unless the other club makes a huge offer
9:02
As much as the Cardinals wouldn't want to move, say, Walker or Nootbaar, the Mariners wouldn't be crazy in insisting on either for Gilbert
Tyler
9:02
Do the rangers get Ohtani?
Ethan
9:03
Ohtani for Evan Carter Package  Rangers get Cliff Lee 2.0 untapped potential version. Kinda trade i could see this best prospect Angel’s will be offered. #7 top 100 prospect
Mark P
9:03
I don't think there's a chance the Angels move Ohtani to a division rival, if they trade him at all
9:04
Based on rivalry alone, I think we can safely rule out the AL West teams and the Dodgers in any Ohtani trade talks.

That's right, tonight's MLBTR hot take, the A's aren't trading for Ohtani
Peter L
9:04
Is Lorenzens trade value the highest of his career with a 14 2/3 scoreless streak
Mark P
9:05
My suspicion is that the Tigers probably won't get hot enough in the next two weeks to avoid "selling" at the deadline, so yeah, Lorenzen will probably get dealt
Marky Mark
9:06
What do the Marlins need? They just got swept. Maybe Elias Diaz?
Mark P
9:07
Catcher is a definite area of need for Miami, but realistically, so are about 3-4 other positions around the diamond.  Third base is also a glaring need
Tampa
9:08
Doesn’t a team like Tampa make the most sense for Ohtani? He instantly makes them a top 2 World Series championship favorite
Mark P
9:09
Marc Topkin addressed this possibility in a piece earlier today, and the takeaway was that it doesn't seem like a Rays type of move to go all in for a rental player who might cost them 4-5 premium prospects
Mike Elias
9:09
Could I be a sneaky player for Marcus Stroman?
Mark P
9:09
Not sure how "sneaky" it is to suggest that a pitching-needy team like Baltimore might pursue a good starter, but sure, the O's and Cubs definitely seem like a possible match
Guest
9:10
Do you think the team acquiring shohei meaningfully increases their odds of signing him to an extension (like a betts to the dodgers situation) or is he gonna go to free agency regardless?
Mark P
9:11
My guess is that Ohtani will definitely test the market.  The Betts situation was perhaps influenced by the pandemic, since Betts was otherwise seemingly dead set on entering free agency before he and the Dodgers agreed to a mega-deal.
Sammy So-so
9:12
Daulton Varsho has been very good in the field and he has value, but where do you think his offense will wind up over time? Major league average?
Mark P
9:13
The fact that the Jays might happily take "average" at this point is a problem unto itself, as they didn't trade away a top-five prospect for "average" production from Varsho
Who Says No?
9:13
Paxton for Chase Petty - CIN could use some arms to make this run last
Mark P
9:14
If the Reds did move Petty, it isn't like to be for an injury-hampered rental player
Pirates Fan
9:14
Do you see any way the Pirates trade David Bednar?  While a Pittsburgher born and raised…his trade value has to be highest it will ever be at this point due to contract and control.  I’d do what could Pirate fans expect in return?
Mark P
9:15
This same reasoning makes it likelier that the Bucs will keep Bednar, imo.  With all of the top prospects now getting some run in the majors, Pittsburgh is getting eager to contend as early as 2024, and might naturally see Bednar as a good player to keep around.
9:16
The "Hader Effect" might also be somewhat in play here.  While the Pirates aren't as clear contenders as the Brewers were last year, it might be a hit to team morale if the season's relatively good vibes are undercut by another deadline sell.

I am not sure why the O's took Bradfield Jr #17 when there were much better players available.  How would you rate their draft haul overall?  I give them a C
Mark P
9:18
We won't know the answer to this question for years, and I'm not enough of an expert on draft prospects to even give a proper answer now. But, it seemed like a lot of pundits loved the Bradfield pick for the Orioles.
John
9:19
Coby Mayo the best prospect the O’s trade this deadline? Or will they even go that big?
Mark P
9:20
For fans who don't have Mayo on their menu, he is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 75th-best prospect in baseball.....and seventh in Baltimore's farm system, to give you an idea of the Orioles' crazy minor league depth.
9:21
Mayo being moved wouldn't shock me at all, since the names above him are already in the majors (Westburg, Cowser, Ortiz) or somewhat seem too good to move (i.e. Holliday).  Deals from the Mayo/Norby/Basallo tier seem more realistic for the O's at this stage, since they probably want to see what they have in a lot of these youngsters
Desmond
9:22
yankees fans should factually understand and accept if cashman neither sales or buys correct ?  They should just run this season out as with what they got and see how it goes then re evaluate?
Mark P
9:23
I cannot imagine the Yankees will stand pat at the deadline.  They know this team, as presently constructed, is in a tough race to even make the playoffs, let alone contend for a championship
Aaron Nola
9:23
Any chance I wind up in St. Louis ?
Mark P
9:24
Given how the Phillies have been just about the best team in baseball for the last six weeks, no dice
Giants fan
9:24
I think the Giants have more to gain than any other team when it comes to trading for Ohtani as it gives them a few months to woo him/convince him the club is serious on contending, but do you think it could possibly get done without giving up all three of Harrison, Luciano and Whisenhunt?
Mark P
9:26
Zaidi: Arte, if you really wanted to enrage the Dodgers, you can trade Ohtani to us for nothing.

Moreno: Great idea!

Seriously, yeah, the Giants (or any team) would have to give up a ton for Ohtani, which might be another reason a trade is unlikely.  Actually finding an offer that meets the Angels' gigantic demands will be difficult.

Anything Atlanta should shop for? I’m thinking Bellinger and maybe a back end guy like Graveman?
Mark P
9:28
Atlanta's outfield seems more than set now that Harris is hitting again, so Bellinger would seem like a luxury.  Relief help seems more likely, especially a left-hander if Minter is going to be missing a lot of time
