Welcome to the Weekend Chat!  Lots to discuss with a little over a week before the trade deadline, so let's get into it....
JT
8:32
Which Nationals players will get traded beyond Candelario?
Mark P
8:33
Lots of possibilities, as MLBTR's Darragh McDonald recently explored.  I expect pretty much all the rental player types to go, but probably not the likes of Lane Thomas unless the Nats get a really great offer

Is Henry Davis legit???
Mark P
8:34
My hot take is that the first overall pick of the 2021 draft will end up being a good player.

What does Tampa do?
Mark P
8:35
Maybe the most interesting of all teams to watch on deadline day, since they're suddenly in need of a real spark after their brutal month of July.  My suspicion is that the Rays make one of the bigger moves of anyone, since they seem to be operating with more win-now urgency this season.
8:36
And now they might be even more aggressive if there's suddenly some doubt over just getting into the playoffs or not
Logan N
8:36
Where do you think Contreras will go or do you think he will stay in St. Louis? I'm a Cubs fan
Mark P
8:37
He's staying.  The Cardinals aren't going to move on this early, since they still have an eye on winning in 2024
Scott
8:37
What's your prediction for Ohtani? What team and what type of return?
Mark P
8:37
Said it before and I'll say it again, I highly doubt he's getting traded.
Tim Anderson
8:38
Am I getting traded? SF?
Mark P
8:40
Anderson has been hitting better over the last week or so, but a lot of teams might not be considering him at all given his extreme struggles in the rest of 2023.  The Giants might be a bit since they'd theoretically just need Anderson for part-time duty anyway until Estrada returns
Braves
8:41
How big of a lead do you think Acuña has on his competition for MVP?
Mark P
8:41
He's far and away the favorite at this point.  Even with some other notable players having great seasons, Freeman and Betts will probably split the LA vote
Jared
8:42
How realistic is it for the Guardians to trade Civale?
Mark P
8:42
To promote another of my colleague's posts, Anthony Franco recently looked at Civale as a trade chip: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/07/the-guardians-other-potential-r...
8:43
And I agree with Anthony, the chances of a Civale deal might gone up with Bieber's injury, if the Guards want to capitalize on selling a veteran arm.  Plus, if they can trust on Bieber being back at some point, he'll be the veteran reinforcement they're giving away now in moving Civale
Nolan Gorman
8:44
Am I getting traded?
Mark P
8:44
Very unlikely.  Gorman has made himself into a solid part of the Cardinals' future, so he won't be one of the players dealt unless it's part of a real intriguing blockbuster

What is the hold up signing Walker Jenkins by the Twins?
Mark P
8:45
I think Jenkins might be the last first-rounder still unsigned?  But, I wouldn't worry about it, the draft was only two weeks ago.
Abe Froman Jr.
8:46
It's gotten pretty ugly on the South Side of Chicago after the last season and a half. Does the front office survive this disaster or do you think it's been bad enough changes will finally happen?
Mark P
8:48
It takes an awful lot to convince Jerry Reinsdorf to move on from an executive that he likes and trusts.  It feels pretty clear to me (and you, and a lot of White Sox fans) that some new voices in the front office might be very helpful, but it isn't known if Reinsdorf still thinks Hahn and company can get the job done, or if he's hit his breaking point
Joe Don
8:48
If you’re the Texas GM, do you keep or trade Ezequiel Duran?
Mark P
8:48
Absolutely keep him, especially with Seager out for a couple of weeks.
Cole
8:49
Robert Jr to the Marlins! Make it happen Kim.
Mark P
8:50
I think we can safely rule this one out.  Robert might be just about the last guy the White Sox move, since there's no indication that they're considering any kind of scorched-earth rebuild
Blooper
8:50
Is it crazy to think the Braves target a LF, let Rosario and ozuna split DH
Mark P
8:50
Not crazy at all.  After all, Atlanta's had plenty of success at picking up random outfielders at the deadline.
KC Fan
8:51
Good Evening, the royals are NOT playing good ball at all. In the off season, do we trade for a pitcher like James Shields trade or do we sign players that can help the team now, because our fans are NOT coming out to see them play???
Mark P
8:52
It is possible that 2023 James Shields might be a better pitcher than at least a couple of the Royals' current arms, but in any case, the Royals aren't in any position to make such a move.  If anything, KC might be looking at a rebooted rebuild, since there are a whole lot of question marks within the group they expected to be their next core.
8:53
The original Shields trade was made by a Royals team that was confident their young team was about to turn a corner, and they indeed did just that with a winning record in 2013.
Wiemer
8:53
With Sal Frelick just getting a taste of the majors and a major logjam in the future for the brewers OF, does Wiemer end up getting traded?
Mark P
8:54
Nope.  Wiemer is probably just about of the last guys Milwaukee deals, since he's a future piece
Brian
8:54
I think the Braves need a couple more arms. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:55
They got a good one today in Chirinos, who should at least be a decent stopgap until Fried and Wright return
WaterCooler
8:56
Assuming M’s sell; What kind of return would you expect from a Mariner trade that sends Teo and Sewald.
Mark P
8:57
Sewald is controllable through 2024, so he might garner more than Teoscar at this point, given Hernandez's struggles and how basically every contender could use a bullpen arm.

Moving Sewald might seem like a bit of the Kendall Graveman trade redux, but we know such a move is in Jerry Dipoto's playbook
