Due to a scheduling change, the Weekend Chat will take place tonight instead of the usual Sunday timeslot.  However, sources have informed me Saturday is also part of the weekend, so it still counts.

Onto the questions!

What is your AL ROTY race looking like??
Mark P
8:28
Henderson's my pick, as assuming he keeps it up over the next few weeks, he'll have a clear edge with Josh Jung out.

Honorable mention to Jung, Yoshida, and Triston Casas making a late run

Will the Orioles be regretting their lack of deadline moves?
Mark P
8:30
If I was the Orioles, I might've gone a bit harder on another starter besides Flaherty.  But then again, teams were undoubtedly asking for star prospects for just about any half-decent arm, and I can understand why the O's might not have wanted to make a bigger all-in kind of move in 2023
They're still leading the AL East, and let's just say that the O's have fewer problems than the Rays do right now

Would Corey Seager be MVP this year if he had been healthy are year long.?  He's absolutely obliterating baseballs this year.
Mark P
8:32
If Seager had posted a 1.070 OPS (his current number) over a full season, he would've given voters something to think about, but he's still finishing second to Ohtani

Being from Colorado, what do you think the possibilities of an average young-aged Rockies team could be one of the surprise teams in 2024? Maybe nearly on par to this year's Reds team?
Mark P
8:34
It's enough of a surprise to see the young Reds immediately doing so well, and they've got some of the best prospects in all of baseball.  The Rockies has some good youngsters but they aren't nearly as well-regarded as Cincinnati's core, so it would count as a pretty giant shocker.

Also, the Reds' success has also been a by-product of a somewhat weak division.  Whereas the Rockies would have a much tougher go in the NL West

The Braves “won” the exchange of first basemen right?
Mark P
8:35
It's a draw of a "trade" if I've ever seen one, given how Olson and Freeman are both hitting like superstars.
Ken Kendrick
8:35
What happened? We looked like contenders.
Mark P
8:36
(Kendrick = Diamondbacks owner)

The lack of pitching simply caught up, and enough of the lineup went cold enough that the offense couldn't compensate

Walker Buehler…. RP or SP down the stretch.  What should we expect from him.
Mark P
8:37
Probably reliever at most, since it seems very unlikely he'll be built up enough to return as a starter.  Even an RP role might be a bit of a longshot, but it would be quite interesting for the Dodgers to have Buehler as a bullpen x-factor heading into the playoffs

Who's the Yankees manager in 2024, if you had to guess?
Mark P
8:38
Maybe a coach or manager within the organization?  Or some other former Yankee with longstanding ties.

It does really feel like some changes have to happen in the Bronx, especially if the Yankees can't even get to .500
8:39
But, that said, I could see Cashman/Steinbrenner firing Boone, but still hiring from within rather than bringing in a fresh new voice

Surprised at the dejong dfa. Thought Schneider would be demoted with the veteran retained,. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:40
If Bichette doesn't get injured, the Jays probably wouldn't have gotten DeJong at all.  Seems like he was entirely a stopgap measure until Bichette was healthy, and DeJong didn't produce nearly enough to retain a job now that Bichette is back
Toronto Blue Jays

What happens this off season to fix the offense?
Mark P
8:43
Chapman, Merrifield, Belt, and Kiermaier are all free agents, so some big changes are inevitable.  Unfortunately for the Jays, these four have been among the better bats, whereas most of the players controlled in 2024 and beyond are the ones with more concerning struggles.

Seems like a change in hitting coach is overdue, and the Jays are another team that might well consider a managerial change if they don't make the postseason.  Beyond the dugout personnel, it'll be fascinating to see if the Blue Jays spend big again to fill these lineup holes, or pursue trades, or take some other approach in the types of hitters they acquire.

Is 30 HRs next year realistic expectations
Mark P
8:44
I lean towards no based on his home ballpark, but the Tork has at least taken some good strides after his lackluster rookie year
Hader
8:46
Where does he play next year
Mark P
8:47
As much as Hader figured into trade rumors at the deadline, the Padres want to win in 2024.  I could see them just keeping Hader unless another team makes a really big offer.

Whats on the Playlist tonight?
Mark P

The voices of Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez, since I've got the Jays/Reds game on in the background

After the debacle in NYM with Verlander and Scherzer contracts, does that set a precedent to not sign anySP long term for millions? Do we all pay?
Mark P
8:49
First off, teams will never stop giving big deals to premium talents.  And, the Scherzer/Verlander contracts weren't exactly long-term deals.
Brian
8:50
Mark, do the Ms give Toescar a qualifying offer? If not do you see them trading from the starting rotation for a replacement? What will they do next year when Ray and Marco are back?
Mark P
8:51
Been a rough year for Hernandez, can't imagine Seattle would want to pay him a $19.5MM-ish deal next year.  It's a bit of a tough beat for the M's since I'm sure they were figuring on Hernandez as a clear QO candidate when they acquired him, even if they didn't see him as a long-term add themselves
8:52
As for the rotation...just keep everyone?  Like last year when everyone was begging for the Mariners to deal Flexen or Gonzales, sometimes it's a good idea to just keep your pitching surplus.
Gonsolin
8:53
What is going on? Why am I "shut down" for the season? Am I being punished for allowing 10 earned runs yesterday?
Mark P
8:54
Seems pretty clear that something hasn't been right with Gonsolin for much of the season, and pitching hurt would be an explanation.  Maybe yesterday's game was just the last straw where Gonsolin could no longer tough it out

What's your thoughts on the Tigers picking up Carson Kelly?
Mark P
8:55
Seems like a lateral move at best, though the Tigers might feel they've already seen Haase's best in the majors. Kelly might still have more upside given his past pedigree, but he's also badly in need of a change of scenery.
