After a one-week hiatus, the Weekend Chat is back! We'll take a minute for the questions to arrive, then get cracking....
Amazin Mets

if Alonso keeps this up, what is his contract?
Mark P
5:29
Difficult to say, since teams' broader concerns about Alonso are still in place --- he's still a first base-only player, and he'll be even a year older than he was last winter.  An elite MVP-level season will allow him to land a long-term contract likely without any opt-outs built in, though I'm still unsure if any club would be willing to go beyond four years.

I was just was wondering if you think David Robertson will pitch for somebody this year? Might be a good poll?

When a player gets dfa'd does he remain with the team until something officially happens to him, what exactly happens to the player?
Mark P
5:32
He isn't in the clubhouse or anything, and he basically just sits at home waiting to hear if he's traded/claimed/cleared waivers.
Tigers
5:32
Kerry Carpenter is hurt once again. Meadows won’t be back until late May at best. It’ll be weeks before Vierling and Perez are back. Who has it worse than us?
Mark P
5:33
The outfield injuries are certainly concerning, yet I think roughly 20 (at least) teams would sign up to be in the Tigers' overall position
Ed
5:35
Can you see Charlie Morton getting dfa soon and then just “soft” retiring if he keeps this up thru late may
Mark P
5:36
I suspect Baltimore would talk to him first out of veteran respect before pursuing a DFA or anything, but keep in mind that there's still a lot of time left for Morton to turn it around.

What are the chances that the mariners could snag like Tovar or Amador from the Rockies for relatively little? Like 4 lower to mid minors pitching prospects?
Mark P
5:37
The Rockies view those guys as building blocks, not as trade chips
Dustin
5:37
With Alcantara struggling, does this cause concerns for his trade market?
Mark P
5:39
Some rust isn't unusual after a season-long layoff.  This is another "it's still early" answer, and assuming Alcantara looks more like his normal self soon, the Marlins can still command top dollar in a trade.

Also, remember what Trevor Rogers got at the deadline last year?  So yeah, Alcantara even in his current form would still bring a lot back to Miami

5:39
Any chance the orioles extend Mullins?
Mark P
5:40
I doubt it.  They'll let him go in free agency and then restock the outfield from within.  It wouldn't even be a total shock if the Orioles dealt him at this year's deadline, a la Hays last year

What’s more concerning the lack of home runs the Jays are hitting or the amount they are giving up?
Mark P
5:44
The lack of home runs being hit. Santander has yet to really heat up yet, but even if he does, that doesn't fix the larger issue that half of Toronto's lineup has little to no home run power.  It puts a lot of extra pressure on the big boppers to go yard.

how does Clase go from best in the game to unrosterable so fast? Is this something to seriously worry over or just a bad stretch for him?
Mark P
5:47
The "good news" is that Clase's peripherals (like a 3.99 xFIP) are much lower than his 7.84 ERA, and his sky-high .455 BABIP is bound to normalize.

But, you're correct in that Clase is clearly not himself right now. It could be that the heavy workloads (and last season in particular) have caught up to him, which isn't great for the Guardians' chances.

How much Future (2.0) will the Cubs give up, via overpayz, for a SP this summer?
Mark P
5:51
As someone who's always been pretty high on Javier Assad, I think his return will help things to some extent.  But with Steele now done, the Cubs certainly seem like prime candidates to land a starter prior to the deadline.  The caliber of said starter and the amount of team control will determine how much Chicago is willing to give up, prospect-wise
Basestealing power

What current player will go down as the most prolific basestealing power hitter?
Mark P
5:52
...uh, probably the guy who went 50-50 last year

Do the Twins' contention hopes already look dead?
Mark P
5:53
I was pretty low on the Twins' chances heading into the season, and have seen nothing to change my opinion.  Obligatory "it's still early" statement, but it looks like a long season coming in Minneapolis
Mike
5:54
Do you think the Yankees might want to try to pickup up a draft pick via trade with a INF considering the bullpen depth they’ll have once Lo and Matzek come back? I think they could match up really well with that Twins
Mark P
5:55
The teams with CBR picks (i.e. the only picks that can be traded) are generally pretty hesitant to use them as trade chips. I can't see a club being eager to move a pick for a middle-of-the-bullpen type of reliever.

What is the biggest concern with the Red Sox right now? Leading MLB in errors, the anemic offense, the poor relief pitching, or all of the above? Starting pitching doesn't seem to be too bad with reinforcements on the way.
Mark P
5:58
Kind of "all of the above" since on paper, the Red Sox are in pretty decent shape.  Their offense has actually been doing well despite a few guys in big slumps, for instance.

Clearly things will improve for Boston now that they're past the toughest part of their schedule and no longer have to face....uh, the White Sox

John Cena or Cody Rhodes
Mark P
5:59
You'd think Cena wins to cap off his big heel turn, but I think Rhodes will take it
Royals
6:00
If the Royals paid $7M per year for the 3 remaining years of Yoshidas contract, would they trade hime for Freddy Fermin considering they need catching and we need any live bat to stick in the OF?
Mark P
6:00
As much as the Royals need outfield help, they wouldn't have to pay even that much for Yoshida.  I've used this metric before, but if Yoshida was a free agent last winter, how much do you think he would've received?  The answer is certainly not three years and $21MM, so KC would want Boston to eat a lot more money

Philly a possible landing spot for Robertson?
Mark P
6:03
If Robertson was really looking for a $10MM salary for 2025, I can see that as being a little high given the Phillies' many payroll commitments.

That said, investing in Robertson would've seem like a much wiser move than signing Jordan Romano. Perhaps I'm a little biased in this regards as a Jays fan who saw Romano struggle even at the end of 2023 (let alone his nightmare 2024), but Robertson would've seemed like a much safer signing
6:04
As to whether or not signing Robertson could still be on the table now, maybe?  For the Phillies or any other team, the question is now what can you expect since Robertson didn't have a Spring Training and he'll need a lot of ramp-up time

What's going on in Pittsburgh? They are hard to watch, The players all look miserable. Who will light the fire to get things turned around?
