I'll just allow everyone to gather up here and we'll get off and running momentarily.

You know the drill: ask me questions that will allow me to give brilliant answers. If my answers are poor, I will blame you!!!

Why is John Jaso still on the Pirates.
Jeffrey Todd
2:08
At this point, what's the harm, I guess. It hasn't really worked out, but I thought it was a sound decision to bring him in at the time.
The guy was a heck of a hitter and wasn't that bad last year. He'll be a free agent soon enough. (Not a bad bounceback target.)
2:09
(BTW I'm obviously KIDDING above. Trust that was clear.)

Who's more likely to go...... markakis or Kemp... what's the possible return
Jeffrey Todd
2:09
Hoo boy. Neither?
2:10
Call me crazy, but I don't really expect the Braves to clear room for Acuna over the winter. It's not like they can't just wait and do that whenever it seems advisable.
2:11
Clearly, ATL would be willing to offload either player. But there just isn't going to be much interest. And I think it would be silly to put Acuna on the opening day roster and burn up a year of control.
2:12
Return for Markakis or Kemp, btw, will be cost savings.  Both contracts are under water.

Who do you see as the O's RF next year?  In house or FA?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
I guess we're assuming the O's are going to just keep plugging away and not launch a rebuild.
2:15
Don't see how they can rely much on Rickard given how little he's shown at the plate. Smith is gone. So, the O's are pretty wide open there. In recent years they have gone after short-term veterans, often creating platoon situations, and I would generally expect that to continue.

What team needs to do a complete teardown the most right now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Marlins, because they have no reasonable path that I can see to adding enough pitching to becoming a contender. And because they have some really great position player assets that could deliver monster returns.
Wait a year or two and who knows what things will look like.

Your thoughts on Rhys Hoskins?

What will it cost the Mets to get Jason Kipnis?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Well, Kipnis shouldn't have a ton of trade value given his injury and performance issues and substantial contract. It's still possible CLE will prefer to keep him, but obviously the bump into the OF may also be a signal of how they feel.
2:19
Seems reasonably plausible as a Mets target, I suppose, though NYM could really look to achieve some value at second base. There are a lot of good players that could be available there.
(Some on shorter-term deals that would maintain flexibility.)

Any chance the braves actually acquire Michael Fulmer this offseason
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
Pretty minimal, I'd guess. I'm sure they will look into it, but Tigers won't discount b/c of the surgery and I don't think DET will be too eager to deal him for prospects.

How do the white sox look to you with their recent play. What holes stick out
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Look, the whole roster is pretty much a hole. (If that's even conceptually possible.) But that's fine and great and by design. They can keep rolling up young talent and taking advantage of whatever veteran opportunities might present themselves over the winter.

What are the Dodgers chances of landing Ohtani?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
I'm getting lots of Otani questions, understandably.
2:23
It's essentially impossible to handicap the teams here, because bonus money mostly won't factor. (Unless, say, he decides he's not interested in those clubs that can only offer $300K bonuses.)
Dave Cameron wrote up a scenario of teams dangling sort of convoluted extension opportunities that they'd plan to give Otani after a year in the big leagues. Generally, I can see that and all manner of other pitchers coming from teams.
2:24
Endorsement type opportunities, playing situations, teammates, other perks. They will all be looking for ways to present their situation as best.
2:25
The Dodgers have immense resources and a creative FO, and are on the west coast, so they are among the orgs that would seem to have the best chance from the outside. But they are also capped at $300K. So ... we're talking total guesswork and minor distinctions at this point.

My sister lives on Sanibel, so I hope soon for you and her and everyone else.

2:27
When should the Padres start trying to sign big free agents to cap off their rebuild a la the Cubs with Jon Lester?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
Never, kind of. Unless they can ramp their salary all the way up to luxury cap levels, like the Cubs could, then it likely wouldnt be wise to use that approach even if the roster is otherwise ready.
But it's hard to give absolutes, obviously.
