How can I put this ...
2:29
I think that would be within the realm of possibility of what they are contemplating. But if they are paying market-ish value for those guys, I also think people analyzing the moves (as I will be) would believe it is likely not enough to move the needle and that it could have harmful longer-term effects.
2:31
Cobb could land in the (admittedly broad) range of like 3/36 to 4/60 ... basically, Ubaldo money. Chatwood will be one of the more hotly pursued one-year type guys so could get something in the 6-8 range. Grandy ... it's possible he'd get something in that realm as well.
2:32
So unless you're getting a discount, that's putting a lot of payroll pressure on this team. And how much can you really expect? But hey, they aren't interested in an offseason rebuild, so what else are you going to do?

Is Ohtani going to freeze the starter pitching market until he signs an MLB team or decides to remain in Japan?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Okay now I am regretting this b/c of your name. But it's a good question!
2:34
Oh-Shoh f'sho is going to be a huge storyline. But he's not like Tanaka in that he isn't going to tie up payroll (at least, excepting any under the table "this is the deal we will eventually agree to" situations). So you can sign present-day Tanaka, or whoever, and then feel fine about getting Otani. You'll feel great, really.
2:35
That said, it looks a bit different when you look at it in the other direction. What if a few teams really think they can get Otani. And then ponder giving $120MM to Arrieta. And then think, "dang, I am already hesitating on that contract and I really don't want to give it if I get Otani."
So there could be an impact. It'll be interesting. And remember we still know little about timing and process. He doesn't have a rep yet. Whoever it is will no doubt be aware of these considerations and will be receiving pressure from teams, too.

Could you see there ever being another player manager? If so who?
Jeffrey Todd

AROD. Marlins. Now.

If NYY look this good without Gleyber, should they dangle him for a top arm and plant him at 3B future?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Deal him for Archer. Do it now, Jeets.
Wait, what?
Okay no more hot takes.

Dude is lost at the plate. He obviously isn’t coming out of the lineup, but does Joe bat him lower, or just keep throwing him back there as is?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
You have to just ride a dude like that where he takes you.
So, keep running him out there.

Can the Cards get Stanton by trading Sierra, Flaherty, Piscotty, and another prospect?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
I am generally of the view that Stanton doesn't have significant surplus value. But teams will perhaps give real value to get a star player at a market rate. There is the opt-out to consider. I guess I still feel that package is too much, since if I'm the Marlins I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Good afternoon Jeff! Thanks once again for such a great chat. How does a New Atlanta GM go about digging themselves out of this mess?Does new info put them further behind?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Thank you, sir!
Still too much we don't know to assess punishment and the like, as some have asked about.
2:41
Even next steps forward are tough, b/c we still don't know the full fallout. The fact is, though, there's a growing pincer of pressure. The best way to appease fans will be to put a winner on the field. But a new FO will surely also want assurances that they won't be blamed for dropping some cash to make that roster into a winner, b/c it probably won't be in 2018.
2:42
Best case scenario would be Dayton Moore, obviously, given his ties and standing in the game. But no matter what, I think it'll have to be someone with some reputation and even some gravitas that takes the GM job.
One thing we don't know is what will happen with Hart.

What are the chances of Boston landing both Hosmer and JD Martinez
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Not seeing both. Really I'm not sure either is the greatest fit. I'm not on the Hosmer bandwagon.
Jose Abreu makes for a nice fit; I expect they will look into him while considering FA targets.

List the order of OF I should trade... I would go Ozuna, Stanton, then Yelich but I would be open to all
Jeffrey Todd

I agree with your assessment.

Who do you think will be angels 2nd basemen
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
Lots of options. Kinsler would be a nice fit, I think.

Then again, why not just #BringBackHowie?
(Trying to start a hashtag thingy, help me out.)

what's billy hamiltons trade value?  and if you were a GM mulling pursuing him would you tend to just pay jarrod dyson?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Hamilton shouldn't require a huge amount in a trade with just two more years left and no batting production in sight. But he's still a valuable asset and you also have to look at things from the Reds' perspective.
