Howdy! Gather round, ask some questions, and we'll get cookin' shortly.

Is it a given that whomever signs Ohtani will have to almost immediately negotiate a new contract?  I know they can’t discuss that in their pursuit but does any team believe they’ll have the guy for the league minimum?
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
I'm not sure that they can't discuss it. I don't think it would be appropriate to plot to make an end-run around the rules (like, "okay so we'll sign the deal on x date for x money"). But I don't see why they can't look ahead and discuss future finances and intentions. That would seem to be relevant and fair. Probably a big gray area there.
2:15
Also if teams were thinking of something like what Tim wrote about yesterday (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/shohei-ohtani-contract.html) then it doesn't matter if it's that or the minimum. Cost would be so low that it would barely register.

How much do you think Ohtani will weigh prospective teams catching situation into his decision? Getting a big contract one day will have a lot to do with his performance. I would think a catcher with a strong defensive reputation like Russ Martin would be a huge factor over someone like Gary Sanchez.
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
I'm sure there'll be dozens of significant factors. Teams that have good catching situations or other similar soft considerations will highlight them. But I have a hard time believing 'tani is going to say no to the Yankees b/c of Gary Sanchez.

Am I gonna be in a new uni by opening day? Or will if I am traded will it not be until this upcoming July?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Really depends on O's true intentions here. Are they just dangling him for a big offer? Or really looking to move him?

What will mean more to the Marlins when considering a Stanton trade: more prospects or more money taken on?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
I think they will have a certain dollar level they can't really go beneath -- I expect most of the contract will need to go w/Stanton -- and that there'll be some floating considerations between there and the new team taking the whole deal.

When will the madness begin? Why won’t the cards consider JD? They were just willing to pay price and heyward 200$, but won’t even entertain JD?
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
I still think Stanton is the first big domino.
2:20
If they really aren't interested in JDM ... yeah, that's sort of surprising to me. Maybe there's something they have identified about him that they specifically do not like? Defense? Not sure.

2:20
do the Phillies trade Odubel Herrera?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Going after ODub is like ordering off the menu. He's not listed as being available. But he's not off the table either. I can at least imagine him being traded, but I don't really think it's particularly likely.
Sorry ... ordering from off of the menu.
Like ... ordering something not listed on the menu? English is difficult sometimes.

Addison Reed seems undervalued this offseason, 125 careers saves and yet isn't mentioned in same tier as Davis/Holland. Is there strong reasoning behind this?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
It's not about the saves so much. The others have been more consistent strikeout machines. But I do think Reed is a sort of underappreciated guy. Did get a lot of whiffs this year and has elite command. I was probably higher on him than the rest of the MLBTR team.

If the Marlins agree to a trade for Stanton and he says "no" will the public be made aware of that info or will that stay behind closed doors?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
Depends upon whether someone has incentive to reveal that info and is mad enough to do so.

Are mariners gearing up for run at ohtani? They traded for more pool money
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
Keeping the door open. And any teams with available pool money could deal it to another org that needs it to sign Ohtani (or another player).
Here's the thing ... is Ohtani going to forego hundreds of millions and then make his call based on a couple mil here or there? No.
2:28
But he could pick his team and say "oh by the way I also want you to go get as much cash as you can." And then they will have to try to deal for it. Even just to make the best pitch possible, I'd assume teams will be telling Ohtani, "and of course we'll trade if at all possible for as much money as we can."

Realistic shot of Mets making an impactful trade or signing this year.
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
Well, they are sure signaling to their reporters that they are strongly looking into the second-tier market for bats. If you consider that impactful, and consider the interest realistic, then I guess it is so.
2:31
For me ... how long have they been preaching that Smith is the future at first? And they are going to pretty much block him after a poor but very brief run in what is being labeled a toxic dugout environment, without giving their new skipper a chance with him? After he turned in 500 quality Triple-A plate appearances earlier in the year
I just don't really get it, honestly.
And, of course, the other side of this is that by adding a first base/maybe corner OF hitter, they would be committing to Juan Lagares as an everyday-ish center fielder. That seems ... risky?
2:32
I get the idea of adding a right-handed-hitting player that could complement Smith and play in the corner OF, say, but spending a good bit of money for Carlos Santana would be surprising.

Any chance of miggy being traded from Detroit?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Not this winter, realistically.
2:33
Hurt and coming off of a bad season and owed so much money. He'll need to rebound before that's possible.
Mike The Moose
2:33
Do you see a market developing for me with an QA attached ?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Yes, that has always been assumed. But I also am not huge on him b/c of his poor OBP skills and perhaps also whether he's going to be a quality defender at third for 5 years (or whatever it might in theory take to sign him).

How does Hamilton and Iglesias for Buehler, Verdugo, Hernandez and Peterson sound?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Sounds like a phenomenal opportunity for the Reds that will not remotely be entertained by the Dodgers.
Rizzo

I think we need another high end starter as the third starter in next year's playoffs as well as the eventual permanent replacement for Gio as the #3. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Definitely an argument for that. I don't think "need" is the right word, though.
