Jeffrey Todd
2:02
I'll allow a few minutes for everyone to gather up ... and to finish something up ... and we'll get started.
2:06
Okay off we go ...
Lorenzo Cain
2:06
Do you still project Cain to land a 4-year, $70M deal, and from who?
Jeffrey Todd
2:07
Yes, I do think that he's going to command that kind of money. Can you see how it might not happen? Sure. But he is The Guy in CF on this year's market.
2:09
Oh dang, you wanted to know where?! I think he's enough of an asset on both sides that he's going to hold appeal to a variety of orgs. There are scenarios where even teams like the Nationals or Rangers are involved (in the former case, that would be totally depending upon other moves & is pure speculation). Giants still make sense. We've heard of the Brewers touching base. I think that shows how broad the interest really is, even if we haven't seen the market move yet.

With the whole Cole debacle yesterday, do you anticipate the Pirates trading Cole, Cutch, and possibly others?
Jeffrey Todd
2:09
Probably not coincidental that we've now had two runus of Cole rumors and near-daily discussion of Cutch. I tend to think both will end up traded.
Pad Squad
2:10
Should the Padres sign Eric Hosmer now, or wait a year or two and sign a great third baseman or left fielder? Anybody in mind as a great fit in the future?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
I don't really understand why they'd sign him unless it was just a screaming value. Why lock into him and Myers?
2:11
In the future... who knows? The flexibility of waiting and seeing is a big part of the appeal of not locking in now.
Pad Squad
2:11
Jayson Werth for the Nats and Jon Lester for the Cubs were two signings that were sort of early additions to clubs one or two years away from competing. If not Eric Hosmer, who should be that same kind of FA signing by the Padres this or next offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
To follow up ... that's a corner OF for a team that didn't have any clear corner OFs in place and a SP that would fit in any rotation. For the Pads, we're talking about signing a good but not great 1B when they already have committed to a player about whom much the same could be said. That's a big element of my issue with the idea.

Does J.D. Martinez ultimate end up a Red Sox and are there any chances for other teams? Blue jays?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
Plenty of opportunity for the Jays if they are willing to pay. But I don't think they are.
(I mean, pay more than Boston.)
2:14
If Heyman's numbers from earlier today are accurate, JDM is looking for 180-200 and he's sitting on offers in the 120-150 range. Maybe that's a bit ambitious on both sides, who knows, but ... seems risky to go past that 150 level.
Jon Coley
2:14
Can you remember an off season quite this slow?
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
Nope. Never has been one so far as I know.
Johnny
2:15
Are the Cards still trying for Donaldson or have they moved on?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
One of those things you can always circle back to if it becomes viable. But they can't avoid other possibilities b/c that could still happen. It's very low likelihood.
Walding
2:15
Do Astros trade for Cole or was that a completely false story?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
I don't think the story, broadly, was completely false. There were multiple reports building up of interest. That sometimes occurs but then something scuttles a deal. The report of an actual agreement was evidently incorrect, though, unless this is one of those situations where ownership nixed an agreed-upon swap or something. But no indication of that at this point.
DJ LeMahieu
2:17
Any chance the Rockies extend me? Or am i headed towards FA
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Given the future options on hand, I'd expect FA.
Lloyd
2:18
Jeff: What return to you venture the Marlins could receive for S. Castro?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
I don't think he's worth his contract, so they'd be looking at achieving some cost savings. (As ever, that could be balanced back by "buying" prospects, though that doesn't really change the valuation.)
That Guy
2:19
Why don't the Giants just go over the Lux Tax? They have the money, and it's quite possibly the only way for them to compete.
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
I don't entirely understand why they care so much, unless they plan to be well over the line in ensuing seasons. You can see why the Yankees and Dodgers are lining up this way, b/c it could mean tens and tens of millions of dollars that they can otherwise utilize in other ways.
2:21
Similarly, it's kinda odd that so many SFG reporters are indicating they are strongly opposed to punting their 2nd round draft pick to sign a QO FA. Yet ... they are willing to part with Arroyo and perhaps other prospects. Maybe that reflects their valuation of particular players, I don't know. It is always difficult to know for sure from the outside, and there's lots of action still to be seen, but it's a bit confusing from my perspective at this point.
Nationals
2:21
Lucroy 1 year 10 mill with a second year 15 mill team option?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Still think he gets more but yeah, they'd have to do that. That's less than they gave Wieters and Luc is a far superior option than MW was this time last year.
Yu Darvish
2:22
How seriously should we take my cryptic messaging that the Dodgers can still sign me? And how in the heck could they do so while staying under the luxury tax?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
I don't know, but let me just say that I am in love with him for that tweet.
AJ Preller
2:23
If Chase Headley has a league average first half of the season, is his trade value more right now or at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
All demand-driven. Who actually needs a decent, older 3B? If nobody does now, I guess you just shrug and wait to see if somebody does then. Either way, won't be much coming in return. If they just want to avoid the obligation, I guess the sooner the better but again - depends upon need.
2:26
Having dealt Yangervis, of course, there's a broader avenue for keeping Headley for now.
Dayton
2:26
IF Bruce gets 3yr/39, what do you see LoCain getting?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
Don't really see a connection between the markets.
Joshua
2:27
Would a package of Soto, Fedde, and a lower level type prospect be enough to land Realmuto, or at least start a conversation? And if not, can you see a realistic scenario they can land him without giving up Robles? Thanks.
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
I think that's in the ballpark of fair, though who knows how Marlins feel. Maybe they really will sit back and name their price. I suspect the Nats can get him w/out giving Robles, though that's dependent upon Marlins scouting view.
