Hey all! I'll allow a few minutes for everyone to gather up and start asking questions and we'll get moving.
Eric
3:08
Which current players do you believe will one day be in the Hall?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
Well I'd put good money on Trout, Kershaw, and Pujols off the top of my head ...
3:10
Beltre is an underrated clear candidate. Guess there are probably a few other veteran types that are borderline. Among younger guys ... certainly could say that Mookie, Correa, Lindor are on a path where they could make it but it's not clear yet.
I'm sure you guys will let me know who I'm missing here too ...

Are the Mets getting a catcher?
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
I'm just not sure who that would be. Who's the best free agent out there, Carlos Ruiz?
3:12
It's hard to trade for a quality catcher at this stage of the season. At the deadline, could go get Lucroy or Ramos. Maybe Flowers or Suzuki.

What are the odds the Diamondbacks dethrone the Dodgers in the NL West?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Increasing by the day. The early samples don't   necessarily tell us a ton about true talent, but the games all count the same and the gaps that have opened will need to be closed.
Pad Squad
3:13
I’m not confident that the Padres will be playoff contenders in 2020. Tatis, Jr. strikes out a ton and the “core” of Margot, Renfroe, Hedges, and Myers leaves a TON to be desired. Please, convince me otherwise!
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
It requires significant projection to suppose they will be.  We just don't know. Even if the top-level talent was more advanced and more certain than it is, there'd be growth and development still to be accounted for.
That's not to say it won't or can't happen, but I'm not exceedingly bullish on the core unit they have gathered up in the majors at this point. It's not like the guys there have the look of Altuve/Correa/Springer, say.
3:15
So, they are still looking for guys (either currently in the majors or next ones up) to establish themselves fully as star level MLB assets. We can't just assume it'll happen.

What exactly does tipping pitches mean and how are pitchers doing it?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Lots of potential ways. I suppose in some regard a different arm angle for different pitches could be classified that way. Not hiding a grip could as well, though that's less tipping than telling. Typically, it refers to the repetition of some mannerism for one pitch but not another.

Do you think that Acuna's slow start at AAA will delay his promotion to Atlanta?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
If the front office wants it to.
3:18
They are probably happy to let the guys currently in the majors get a run and see how that plays out, while waiting for Acuna to force his way up when circumstances dictate. They are free of worrying about giving up a year of control now, but maybe they'll try to hold him back to avoid Super Two status.

Thoughts on Josh Donaldson being given a day off this early in the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
I mean, lots of good players have had days off so far.
MetsBro
3:19
If you were the Mets would you begin working on a Conforto long-term deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
In the middle of the season? Probably not. Over the coming offseason, sure.
Ben
3:20
How does Elvis Andrus' injury affect his opt out clause at the end of the year?  Does it swing either way into his decision to opt out or not?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
Without knowing just how long he'll be out, it's hard to say. But generally it has to tilt the needle against opting out.
3:22
Guessing at how things will look come November, it seems about 50/50 whether it'll be worth it for him to opt out. He has obviously turned things around but isn't exactly a superstar either. If this injury really limits him the rest of the way, I think it could be a big factor in keeping him in Texas.
But that's all guesswork.

Jeff, Max Scherzer is a lock.
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Not yet. But he could get there.
Robot Umps
3:24
At what point in the season is it no longer 'small sample size'?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Never!
Ha.
It  depends on what it is you're sampling. Certain observable skills can be assessed fairly early.
Verlander
3:25
No HOF love for me?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
Well he could still get there, too. I wouldn't say he's a lock yet. The WS probably helps quite a bit.

Is Melky Cabrera going to play this year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
I'm sure he could get a minors deal. But at this point I can't see how he signs a MLB contract, even if he agrees to an option period or some such. So ... depends what he's willing to do.
3:27
I mean, he's obviously still a MLB-level hitter. But he was like dead average last year with the bat and doesn't offer anything in the field or on the bases.
Arden
3:27
Is Buster Posey a lock for the HOF?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
Thought about him at first and thought "nah I don't think so." Now I just looked it up to check ... 37.7 fWAR at 31 years of age.
