Hi all! I'll allow the room to fill up and we'll get it fired up.
Frank
3:06
What do you think the Yankees do with Adam Lind?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
Well he's going to spend some time at Triple-A no matter what, but I don't see much reason to assume the deal came with any assurances of a MLB opportunity.
3:07
That said, perhaps they could use Austin in the OF some and squeeze Lind in as a 1B/DH. Not the greatest fit for the roster, though.
3:08
This is a good chance for me to issue the mea culpa I meant to last week re the Yanks: I thought they had less payroll space beneath the luxury tax than they do when I was going on a few weeks back about how the Red Sox could do more at the deadline. I was wrong! Yanks have room to spend.
Rizzo
3:08
Will I feel the existential pressure of building a team with its best player about to leave and trade the farm at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
Long way to go until they have to make those kinds of decisions, but Rizzo has never done the huge deadline moves and I don't see a particular reason to expect they will now.
Remember, the possibility of no more Bryce and Murphy (and then, after the next season, Rendon) also increases the importance of the top young prospects. Robles/Soto in the OF, Kieboom in the infield.

I was blocked this morning for unfair reasons. Can you please unblock me? Thank you!
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
Well I was building some stuff in my backyard when that happened, so ... I don't know. But anyone is welcome to email through the contact form at any time regarding any commenting matters.

good afternoon Jeff

Likewise, Wrigley denizen.

Is Ozzie Albies the next Jose Altuve?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Well, the power development is obviously very promising. Both high-average hitters with speed. Definitely a similar profile in many ways.
Of course, Albies is just 21 ... Altuve didn't do this at the same age.

Is morales the odd man out with the emergence of teoscar Hernandez? He seems a little redundant when you could platoon Pearce and granderson in the DH spot.
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Teoscar has not played enough MLB games this year to say he's truly emerged, but obviously you'd have to think he'll get to keep playing so long as he keeps hitting. But I have a hard time seeing Morales just being cut loose. They could take the hit on the infield defense by using Pearce some at second and optioning a utility infielder for a while. These things tend to resolve themselves over time as injury and performance changes occur.
Sandy Alderson
3:16
Any thoughts on who I should be looking at for catcher help, via trade or free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Chirinos, Lucroy, Ramos all seem likely to be available. Obviously Realmuto will be the prize but teams are going to have to meet a price on him, not just make the best offer.
Clint
3:18
How long until the Rockies bring up Tapia or Dahl to spark the struggling outfield.
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
Well it'd be easy to just say to pull up Tapia right now were it not for the fact that the Rockies sort of inexplicably have all left-handed-hitting outfielders. But maybe a space will open anyway, depending upon how this CarGo injury situation plays out.
Dahl is going to get more time at Triple-A.
Allen
3:19
How long does pence have?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
I really don't know. He's a respected guy there, obviously, so it's kind of hard to imagine a DFA at this stage of the season. But he has been so bad ... may become a phantom DL candidate at some point before long? But really how long can they wait with Mac Williams hitting and the MLB team kind of limping along?
3:22
I realize you can't answer that question, and that the question is sort of the same as the one you asked. Bottom line is that it's hard to tell with the Giants given their loyalty and such. But if Pence had been signed over the winter to a small-dollar deal, maybe he'd be gone already.
Kyle
3:22
Is Devin Mesoraco a realistic trade target for the Mets, and if so, what would they have to give up?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
He hasn't hit in years and isn't cheap at all, so ... not much. Maybe if he turns in a few solid and healthy months before the deadline he'll be in some demand, though it'd just be some cost savings for the Reds.
BASEBALL
3:24
Have you heard if Jayson Werth is doing well in extended spring? I am surprised he has not been sent to Tacoma yet.
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Not sure, but I wouldn't be too surprised at that. I doubt Werth wants to ride the bus more than he has to. I'd expect he'll mostly get in shape and give the team a look at extended camp and then head to Tacoma for a week or two in advance of a call-up (if they decide they are probably going to use him).
Could end up being a similar thing for Jose Bautista. Those guys are going to be treated differently than a AAAA journeyman type.

3:26
How do the Phillies deal with their overload of OF and IF guys? Anybody they might be targeting in the trade market and/or more motivated to move? Their current surplus is unsustainable for a young core.
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
No reason they can't let it shake out longer and decide who they want to keep. But sure, they could consider trading from the MLB roster to an extent at the deadline. Nothing wrong with having young, MLB assets you can move if you want.
Mets
3:27
Say Nido learns how to hit (its a stretch, I know.) Do the Mets consider moving on from d'Arnaud? That injury history is getting excessive...
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
There's no much reason to think that Nido is going to start hitting. I think d'Arnaud is fairly likely to be gone regardless, esp since it may not be clear as of the non-tender deadline whether he'll be at full strength to open the season. Think they will be looking for a new backstop.

An argument a friend and I have? Prime Griffey vs. Prime Trout? Who you got?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Unless my memory is hazy, Trout has handily outproduced Griffey to this stage of their respective careers. If he keeps putting up 8-10 WAR seasons for a few more and then ramps down into his mid-thirties (or later), they won't be comparable at all when all is said and done.
Trout could legitimately end up being considered the greatest player in history when all is said and done. Obviously has yet to reach that, but the beginning of his career has been that good.

On Tuesday, MLBTR released a 2018-19 MLB Free Agent Power Rankings. Out of the top 10 upcoming free agents this winter, do you see any of them getting traded before the trade deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
I'll guess Machado is traded. Andrus could conceivably be interesting but I sort of think he and the Rangers will work something out.

Which preseason division favorite should be most concerned cubs, nats, or dodgers?
