Hey all, thanks for joining.
You know the drill ... leave some questions, I'll get it started in few minutes.

Dang
@markasaxon
now
Alex Reyes going back on DL, with a right lat strain.
That stinks. Really wanted to see him back in action. And it was going to help make the NLC really fun.

How soon does HAnley sign?
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
Not sure he'll be in any particular rush. Then again, he ought to have a good idea of where the interest is coming from fairly quickly. I expect he'll get MLB offers. Will be a matter of where he gets the best opportunity, since the Red Sox will be footing the bill for all but the league minimum.

If Nathan Evoldi makes a strong comeback what are the rays chances of making a wildcard run?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
There's only so many times you can move useful players and stay competitive, you know? I realize they got back a potential MLB asset in the most recent trade (Moore), but losing Span does impact their OF rotation.
3:10
I mean, I still wouldn't count them out entirely. But I'm also pretty much assuming they will be willing to trade Ramos, etc, at the deadline unless they are in far too good a position to make that reasonable.
3:11
Oh, and as for Eovaldi himself ... still need to see quite a bit more. He has always had the intriguing stuff, so that's not necessarily any different. But promising, sure, that he looks to be in good form at the moment.

What’s happening to the NL West??? All teams are underperforming
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
Are they, though?
3:12
Dodgers are, I agree. Injuries are a factor there. Otherwise ... I think all are right in range of what I anticipated.

Soto batting leadoff
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
They'll keep mixing that around. The interesting question is what happens when not only Adam Eaton, but also Brian Goodwin (and Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy) return. Can't keep everyone around and only Soto can be optioned. Hmmm...
3:14
(Only Soto can be optioned of those I mentioned, that is. Obviously Andrew Stevenson can be as well. And Difo, though they need a utility INF.)
Can't bump Mark Reynolds, Michael Taylor is your RHH OF. It'll be interesting, if no new health problems crop up.

What kind of deal might McCutchen have to take if he doesn't pick it up?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
There's no real floor. It's not like he was an MVP type of guy last year. This is part of a 3-year less-than-great run. If he ends up looking like a useful guy but really not an everyday type, he could end up just looking for a one-year deal wherever he can get the best promise of playing time.
Still a ways to go before we have a clear picture there, obviously.

What do you think the Braves will do about their 3rd base situation?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Take it to the deadline. If they are in contention and feel they can really improve at a reasonable cost, then why not? Camargo as a utility guy makes sense. He could spell Swanson more, too. And this market is loaded with rental 3B options, so could be a really good situation for a value buyer.
3:18
(I don't think they will push Riley up unless he really dominates at Triple-A, including some reduction of the K rate.)

3:18
Should the Nats even consider bringing back Bryce Harper? An outfield of Eaton, Robles, and Soto seems like a very good, very cost effective outfield.
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
If you view Harper as a generational type of talent, then it could still make sense. But, yes, they are positioned about as well as could be hoped as things are shaping up. (Presuming Robles returns, gets healthy, shows well, at least.)
Nats will also have lots of open payroll for 2019, so plenty of room to fill in where desired. The window isn't shutting just b/c Harper and Murphy are free agents.
(Don't sleep on a Rendon extension, either.)

what happened to me
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
Loss of velo. Many innings. Relatively old. It happens sometimes, even to the great ones.

Should the Mets make degrom available?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Boy that could be a really interesting and tough question. It isn't really presented just yet. But obviously there are some worrying trends. Thing is, how do you just market deGrom? There are so many other good and/or expensive assets. And the situation isn't simple like it was last year, when it was obvious to just trade the guys on expiring deals.
3:23
Regardless, won't deal deGrom unless there's a monster offer. As this market is shaping up, though, he could stand out quite a bit. Would clearly be the best-performing pitcher available. And his future control is immensely valuable.

Nick Markakis is finally an all star? I (and the orioles) miss him in right field and his consistency at the plate. Something the Orioles haven't had since he left
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Absolutely he should be an All-Star. That status goes to whoever played to the standard, regardless whether it involved some good bounces or whether it's sustainable. Still no reason to think he'll keep it up all year long, but he has stung the ball and gotten deserved results. Good for him.
3:26
Consistency at the plate, for him, has typically meant being slightly above average. So this is well out of character. Just to be clear w/r/t the O's decisionmaking on him.
Bobby Evans
3:27
What could i realistically bring back for MadBum? And can i tag on a pricey contract to him too?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
Depending upon how he shows upon his return, lots and lots. But I'm still not buying that he'll be available.
3:28
Using MadBum to shed salary would be tricky mid-season, though. Whether or not that'd be preferable to maxing out the talent return, doing so this July would freeze out some teams that would otherwise have interest.

Should the Nationals go after a veteran catcher?
