So after promising I would get a consistent chat time and stick with it ... I had a conflict last Friday and then got off track again. Evidently I have become a forgetful old man, so no more promises.
4:07
Anyway ... thanks for joining today.
Let us talk of baseball ... we'll get started in a few minutes once the room fills. Go ahead and start asking.
Trade

Betts and Workman to Mets for Diaz, Dom Smith, and 3 low level prospects
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Good to see we have some Mets fans in the house.
Felix
4:12
did i make you cry last night
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
I took a deep breath and successfully fended off tears when I saw the replay today.
V cool.

Is this it for King Felix in Seattle?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
Have to think so.
Giants
4:13
Haven't seen a list of candidates for the Giants manager job, any ideas who (or what type of individual) they will be looking at?
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
Honestly, when I see a post that just sort of pulls names from thin air on managerial candidates, I mostly roll my eyes. Unless and until there's clear reporting connecting particular names to a job -- or, at least, some strong prior connections that make speculation at least plausible -- we can largely ignore.
4:15
Which is to say ... no, I have no real idea. Obviously we know Zaidi will want someone that is analytically versed or adaptable, though I'm certain he's looking for a good bit more than that.

Name the White Sox’s 2020 rotation on opening day
Jeffrey Todd
4:18
I think they are going to end up with two veteran free agents. Probably one on a fairly hefty contract. I would guess Keuchel or Odorizzi, say, along with a bounceback type like Rick Porcello.
Obviously trade possibilities as well. But that's harder to guess at.

Who are some realistic SP options for the Jays in the off-season?
Jeffrey Todd
4:20
It's not entirely dissimilar from the White Sox situation, except that they have a much tougher path to contention in that division. But it'd be rather disappointing to see them just pursue another group of cheap bounceback targets. There's certainly payroll space (now and in the future) for some bigger moves, but it really isn't as clear in this case whether they'll pursue them.

What happens with votto in the off season
Jeffrey Todd
4:21
He's staying
KyleA
4:22
Do you think Grichuk could be a possible trade candidate this off-season?
Jeffrey Todd
4:22
Are the Blue Jays going to hang onto a big piece of the contract?
Don't see it happening.
Mets
4:23
What should the mets do with their clog of offensive talent. I know depth is important but it seems with everyone healthy next year there is nowhere to put JD Davis, Dom Smith, or Jed Lowrie? Could they potentially trade some pieces to get a single superstar talent?
Jeffrey Todd
4:24
You can't trade multiple decent big league pieces for a high-end player, generally, let alone a superstar.
4:25
Beyond that, the thing about the Mets is ... they were a middle of the road offensive team. That's due partially to some poor performances dragging down the mean, but they aren't exactly sitting on a juggernaut. Lowrie and Cespedes are huge health/age question marks. Davis is a big BABIP regression candidate. Etc. There is talent but there are still questions.
Dom Smith does look like a trade candidate since you have to assume Alonso plays every day.
Braves fan
4:25
Assuming Braves' offseason priorities are re-upping Donaldson and Keuchel, which of these is their likely next move: (1) sign Castellanos to bolster the offense or (2) sign Zack Wheeler to create a potential top of the line rotation (3) stand pat and count on their guys in the pipeline: Anderson, Wright, Pache?
Jeffrey Todd
4:27
I wouldn't assume that set of priorities. They will surely at least explore Donaldson to a certain price point, but there's a point at which Anthopoulos's (entirely understandable) love for him will run into the practical fact that he's not getting any younger. I think it's very plausible but hardly a slam dunk. Keuchel? Much less likely they bring him back, though still possible.
4:28
Otherwise ... I do think they need to add a starter and shouldn't hold back from going for a good one. And that they need a corner outfielder, though I've no idea whether they really like Castellanos or would think he's the right target. Also have to imagine bullpen will be on the list.

If the Reds hit like they did last year and pitch like they did this year, isn’t that a contending team? Assuming they add a few pieces
Jeffrey Todd
4:31
Trouble with that line of thinking is that there's always year to year variation -- luck, health, etc -- even given a baseline of true talent. The Reds had great fortune in rotation health this year. Maybe they got a bit unlucky that some guys didn't do as much with the bat as we'd have anticipated. Odds are both of those things will trend back the other way to some extent.
4:32
This team has a path to contention, especially in a division that is likely again to be more clustered than outpaced by a single powerhouse. But there are multiple holes to fill. Fortunately they should have some spending capacity to work with.
Tom Ricketts
4:33
Blow it up or more moderate approach?
Jeffrey Todd
4:34
I don't see how they blow it up. It isn't like the team wasn't competitive. After all the investments and the success, gotta keep trying to put a winner out there.

Bochy doesn’t “retire” and coaches Phillies to playoffs/world series next year....with madbum and cole joining Nola in rotation.....now that would be smart stupid money?
Jeffrey Todd
4:35
I don't know but it'd be fun to see a team like the Phillies have an old school offseason like that.
Giant dreams
4:35
Why do people not value Kevin Pillar. Plays hard every day. Chemistry guy. CF with about 90 RBIs. What's not to like?
Jeffrey Todd
4:36
I mean, people like those aspects of him. Always have. There's a reason he has had a job all this time.
But there are things not to like, such as the fact he is awful at getting on base. You can't ignore that as an aspect of his value.
