Welcome to tonight's chat!  Did I make a tactical error starting it just 10 minutes before the Bulls documentary begins?  Hmmm...just in case, I'll be happy to answer any questions about Michael Jordan's baseball career.

Let's begin!

I may have missed this but how are teams going to handle replacements for injuries if/when the season resumes?
Mark P
7:56
This has yet to be really determined, like any things amidst these loose "Arizona plan" or "Arizona/Florida plan" proposals that are under consideration.  I'd imagine that in lieu of a proper minor league season, teams would have a group of minor leaguers also on hand to train (probably in separate facilities, for quarantine purposes) and be ready in case an injury replacement is needed

MJ had a baseball career just for Space Jam. Change my mind
Mark P

Try this one on....Shawn Bradley had a basketball career just for Space Jam

just a thought catchers are not in the Hall of Fame because they can't put up the statistics as regular players so Ted Simmons going in was really great what do you think about javy Lopez
Mark P
7:58
Lopez is in my "hall of very good."  An outstanding player, but not quite HOF-level in my view.

Which Korean team will you be following closest? I’m partial to the Lotte Giants because they have former Mariners cult hero Dae-Ho Lee

That would be a fun idea for fans.....randomly adopt a KBO team to root for over the course of the 2020 season (assuming, of course, that the KBO League's plans aren't thrown off by the coronavirus).

I think one of the biggest casualties (baseball wise) from the current pandemic is the cancellation of the Field of Dreams game.  I hope they will reschedule that next season.  Agree?
Mark P
8:02
My guess is that the upheaval baseball is facing this year will spill over into 2021 and probably 2022 as well, to some extent.  Along those lines, "special events" like the Field Of Dreams game might be on hold for several years, since MLB might prefer just business as usual once things get back on track.

Maybe 2024, to coincide with the 45th anniversary of the movie?

Do you think Michael would have been a good baseball player if he continued
Mark P
8:05
Realistically, no.  He was a mediocre Double-A player, so "good" by a professional standard wouldn't have been achievable.

That said, the fact that Jordan could play mediocre Double-A ball at age 31 despite barely having ever played baseball before is still pretty remarkable, all things considered

Was Krush hampered by injuries last year or is he starting to decline?
Mark P
8:06
Our own George Miller recently looked at Mr. 247 as a possible rebound candidate: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/04/rebound-candidate-khris-davis.h...

Are we kidding ourselves in thinking there will be baseball this year?

Wouldn't it be better, for all concerned if MLB just closed it down and regrouped for next year, healthy and rarin' to go.
Mark P
8:08
I'll be honest, I'm mentally prepared for the possibility that MLB doesn't play at all in 2020.  Hopefully I'm wrong, and there's a way we can get a good number of games played under safe and stable conditions.

Keep in mind, it's also still April.  We probably have at least a couple of months left before cancelling the season becomes unavoidable, so I don't blame the league and the MLBPA for exploring every possible option to get some baseball in

Best players who also played basketball- Dave Winfield
Mark P
8:12
Winfield was a fantastic athlete that could have gone pro in seemingly multiple sports.

In terms of "best baseball player who played basketball," Bill Sharman and Danny Ainge take the cake

2024 will be the 45th anniversary now I feel old
Mark P
8:13
Hang on, it's actually the 35th anniversary.  I miscounted.

Chances I resign with the Braves to finish what I didnt even have a chance to start if the 2020 is cancelled?  There had to be a reason I signed there for less originally right?
Mark P
8:15
Ozuna has addressed his offseason decision, which you can read about here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/marcell-ozuna-discusses-cardina...
8:16
In terms of what he might do next season, I could definitely see him re-signing in ATL, or maybe he'll just go to free agency again and look for a long-term deal without the burden of the qualifying offer.

Do the A's need another arm? Montas had a good half season before peds, fiers is old and can drop off a cliff at anytime, luzardo and puk are young and have yet to show they can stay healthy, bassitt and manaea finally stayed healthy so to speak and mengden is still inconsistent.
Mark P
8:18
The fact that you mentioned seven names there is a sign of Oakland's pitching depth.  While there isn't a ton of proven track record among the younger arms, the A's have shown that they can do a lot if just two or three of those pitchers can be viable big league hurlers

If a team carries a 29 Man roster for the first month of the season, then do they carry 16 Pos. Players and 13 pitchers? If the seasons begins in May, then who begins season on injured list? Will there be a trade deadline or an All Star Game?Does MLB have a scheduled date to begin and end the season? If MLB doesn’t have a season, then would they cancel or postpone the season?
Mark P
8:20
Some of this is speculation on my part, but....

  1. I'd guess they'd have a 29-30 man roster all year long
  2. The season is definitely not beginning in May, so that's a moot point
  3. I'd imagine some sort of trade deadline would be necessary, though then again, the whole idea of trades would be harder to manage given the whole quarantine scenario.
  4. Not yet

I think Zaidi is doing a great job in S.F. considering what he inherited. Is the same sentiment shared within the league?
Mark P
8:22
I can't speak for league executives, but in my view, Zaidi has done a solid job.  I don't think a lot of fans quite understood or appreciated what a hole the Giants were in, in terms of guaranteed contracts for underachieving (and thus hard-to-trade) veteran players.

World Series aside Omar Vizquel was a better shortstop than Jeter. CHANGE MY MIND
Mark P
8:23
Defensively, Vizquel was way better.  For everything else, however, Jeter is the clear choice.

Gene Conley was a 3 time All Star pitcher and won a World Series in 1957.  Also was on 3 NBA champions with Celtics

If the states open up , but no travel to Canada still exists what would the Blue Jays do .?
Mark P
8:26
There hasn't yet been much suggestion that, if the season begins, it would be anywhere but Arizona or Florida, so the Jays would join the other teams in playing away from home.

Frankly, I doubt that health conditions improve to the point that teams would be able to regularly play (even in fan-free games) at their own ballparks this season, given the travel complications involved even in going from state to state.  So the added complication of going to Canada is probably a moot point

Does the shortened season make it more likely an underdog like Diamondbacks pull a division crown over the Dodgers?
Mark P
8:28
Absolutely.  In a shortened season, anything could happen given the smaller sample sizes involved.  If you told me right now that a 2020 season happens and that the World Series was something like Royals vs. Giants, I wouldn't be shocked
Actually, if you told me that, my first reaction would probably be HELP US, TIME TRAVELER before inquiring about baseball results.
