Welcome to the Sunday night chat!  Fire away with all the questions.

Do you see Matt Harvey pitching this season?
Mark P
9:05
There weren't many teams publicly linked to Harvey, but I wouldn't be shocked if he gets some looks if/when a season gets underway.  Teams might want as many pitching options on hand as possible, given the compressed nature of a schedule

how about a poll on how many games constitute a "full" season at this point. 100? 81 (half)? 50?
Mark P
9:06
Connor Byrne had a poll about something akin to this topic a couple of weeks ago: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/04/mlbtr-poll-potential-season-len...

Will teams adapt a 6 man rotation in the shortened season because of the doubleheaders and stuff?
Mark P
9:06
Six-man rotation, liberal use of openers and bulk pitchers....I think teams will adopt all kinds of approaches

At what point do I dive into the free agency waters to sign some bats...there is nothing in the system to go with the high end pitching prospects at all
Mark P
9:08
Technically, the Tigers already did this, spending at least some money (albeit not a ton) to sign some legit MLB-level players like Schoop, Maybin, and Cron.

As to when Detroit will start shelling out the heavy free agent dollars again, I doubt it'll be for another couple of seasons at least.  The team will want to see what they have with their young pitchers first

Atkins to SHapiro. We should sign two free agent outfielders before next season.Whats the budget and who should we target/sign
Mark P
9:11
Signing two FA outfielders would imply that the Blue Jays would be giving up on one of Gurriel or Grichuk.  The latter has too large a contract, while Gurriel is too interesting a young player.  I suppose Gurriel could be moved to another position or used as a multi-position guy, but given that he struggled defensively at second base, it might be best to just let him be in LF
9:13
But regardless, Mark Shapiro is on record saying that the team would like to get more of a traditional center fielder.  George Springer is easily the biggest CF available next winter, and while he might be out of Toronto's price range, who knows how this shortened/canceled season will impact both FA contracts or teams' willingness to spend.

Favorite prospect coming up right now?
Mark P
9:14
As a Jays fans, I think I'm obligated to say Nate Pearson.  But I'm very intrigued to see how Luis Robert performs in Chicago, after all the hype

April 26th and I’m tied for the MLB lead in home runs!!!

We could see some surprising MVPs and Cy Young winners this year if there is a shortened schedule. Who would be on your radar of guys that wouldn’t normally be in the conversation but have that hot stretch that greater impacts the shorter season?
Mark P
9:17
Literally anyone in the league could fit this description.  All sorts of random players can get hot for six weeks, eight weeks, whatever.
9:18
NFL fans might remember that the MVP of the strike-shortened (nine-game) 1982 season was....a kicker, Mark Moseley.
Miguel Andujar
9:18
Is it out of the question that I can’t get traded and play 3rd base for a team like the Braves, Cubs, or Rockies this season?
Mark P
9:21
I'm not sure how trades will work, in whatever brief window we'd have between a "second Spring Training" camp opening and the start of a season.  We might not see much or any notable player movement at all, since I think a lot of teams will prefer to just stand pat with what they have.

Speaking of those three particular teams, Colorado already has a pretty decent 3B, if I recall correctly.  Same with the Cubs, though I guess Bryant moves to the outfield in such a scenario.  But, if the Yankees really wanted to move Andujar or if one of those teams really wanted to acquire him, a trade probably would've happened during the actual offseason

Most rewatchable movie of all time?
Mark P
9:23
Ocean's 11, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, Ghostbusters, Big Lebowski....that's probably my Mt. Rushmore of rewatchables, but I might have a different answer if you asked me again tomorrow

9:23
do you think teams will forgo high-fives due to the corona virus?
Mark P
9:24
If there's ever a time to bring back the Canseco/McGwire bash brothers salute, it's now
scott
9:24
If there is no season, are the trade deadlines the same as usual? Or is that something to be determined?
Mark P
9:24
TBD, like basically everything else in relation to a 2020 season.  If there is a trade deadline, I'd have to believe it'd be later than July 31 at this point
Halifax
9:26
Do you think any of the new rules (3 batter min, limit on position player pitching) will be postponed to 2021 (except for the expanded rosters)?
Mark P
9:27
Good question.  The changes could be shifted to 2021, though that would be a kick to some teams who already made some moves (parting with LOOGY-type relievers, for instance) in relation to the forthcoming changes
Reds fan
9:28
I was unimpressed with the reds off season and think they didn’t do enough to compete. They now seem especially deficient on defense. Am I wrong
Mark P
9:29
Defense is definitely a question mark.  Counting on Castellanos to be an everyday outfielder is a risk, as is installing Moustakas as an everyday 2B.

That said, the two add a lot of pop to that lineup.

Who gets hired 1st. Cora or Hinch? Or does Hinch ever get hired?
Mark P
9:31
I think Hinch will get another job in baseball quicker than most would suspect.  Maybe not a managerial post, but bench coach, sure.
Sox fan
9:32
Do you expect a lot of older players retiring if the season is canceled?
Mark P
9:33
That's a definite possibility.  Players who were looking at 2020 as their last season anyway (or sort of hanging on via minor league deals) could decide to just hang up the cleats if the entire year is canceled
9:34
Then again, most players cite "spending more time with the family" as a reason for retirement.  After a year spent with their families in lockdown, some players might be chomping at the bit to get back to baseball!
Jim
9:35
if no season how does that impact a teams luxury taxes?
No Hi-Fives
9:37
Maybe we just play cricket this season instead of baseball?
Mark P

Man, and people claim baseball games take too long...
