Archer. Schoop. Gausman. Dozier. Osuna. Pham. Kela. Ramos. Glasnow and Meadows. Pretty eventful Trade Deadline, right?

Why not a starter?!
AvatarJason Martinez
4:35
Not enough prospects to upgrade the front of their rotation. So question was whether someone like Tyson Ross or Mike Fiers or Matt Harvey was an upgrade over Felix/Wade LeBlanc for the next 2 months. Apparently, they didn't think so because I doubt the price would've been high.

What’s the deal with Cueto?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:38
Not too many pitchers have put off TJ surgery and not had any issues. Tanaka is a rare example. But a pitcher's elbow hurts for a reason. Cueto, Garrett Richards. There's another recent example I can't think of right now. Almost always seems to come up again within a few months of return.

For as much sh*t as I was giving Rizzo for not doing anything at the deadline (other than selling Kintzler) and thinking that this team was competitive, he must have time traveled, because how do we erupt like this for 30 runs in 16 innings? What do you make of a) his idea to do nothing and b) this outburst of offense?

It's one of the most talented rosters in the league and they know they've played terribly. By standing pat and their GM/manager/owner saying "we believe in the guys that are already here", I think they can build some momentum and ride it thru September. Could have same effect as adding an impact player.

Who do you see the orioles building around with their rebuild ?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:42
Yusniel could be the guy. But they've gotten more quality over potential impact and close-to-MLB player(s) with these trades. And that's fine because their farm system was not deep at all.  They added a lot of talent.
Jason M is awesome!

Any outfielders that could be acquired by the Phillies in August?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:45
Curtis Granderson or Adam Jones, if he waives his 10/5 rights. Jose Bautista, too.

Thoughts on the Duvall trade
AvatarJason Martinez
4:47
Love it. Guys like Duvall (versatile, good defender, crushes LHP) are so much more valuable on a contender. Inciarte's been terrible vs LHP so Duvall in LF/Acuña in CF gives them an upgrade.

Why do i get no respect around the league?  Do i need to hit 70 home runs?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:49
I'm sure he gets plenty of respect around the league. Just no well known by the mainstream MLB fanbase. A's just need to make a playoff run and that will change.
Jason

Who loses out on the most playing time in Milwaukee? Shaw?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:52
I think Shaw sits vs LHP and I think the 4 of them (Mous, Shaw, Schoop, Arcia) will split time vs RHP. Not sure of the math, but I'm thinking Schoop/Moustakas get 5-6 starts per week and Shaw/Arcia get 4-5 starts per week.

I made the right move right? Mejia will be a star and so will the rest of my farm?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:55
I would bet that Mejia is the centerpiece in a trade for an impact MLB hitter or starting pitcher during this next offseason or 2019 trade deadline. Just can't see a scenario where Mejia's offense is good enough to keep Hedges and his plus defense/leadership out of the lineup.
4:56
And I thought this before Hedges finally started hitting in recent weeks. He's a below average hitter, but he's really good at his primary job (defense).

So, Wil Myers may try out third base...Whatcha think?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
Not a long-term solution, but it gives a few of their OFs a chance to compete for a corner OF spot in '19. Or, more likely, a chance to showcase someone like Jankowski or Renfroe for an offseason trade. Not enough at-bats for them if it's Myers, Margot and Franchy as the starting OF in '19.

Do you see any starters at the waiver deadline?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:01
Only the rentals ... Tyson Ross, Matt Harvey, Marco Estrada, Mike Fiers, James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson (if Nats fall out), Francisco Liriano (likely used as a RP).

Why do I still not have a setup man?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:06
Barnes has been really good, but they could regret not adding another reliable guy in the 8th. Their farm system has thinned out a lot so not sure they could've me the high asking price for guys like Kirby Yates, Kyle Barraclough. Those were the clear upgrades for the 8th inning, pushing Kelly/Barnes/Thornburg/Hembree down to 6th/7th inning roles.
Jason
5:06
Are teams pretty much done trading their top 10 prospects, or was that just how it worked out at this deadline?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:09
Not too many guys traded at peak value aside from maybe Chris Archer and they got two MLB-ready players who have been considered top prospects at some point. And PTBNL could very likely be a Top 10 guy. A lot of prospect who were traded were outside the Top 10 in their organization but having really good seasons. So potentially on the rise into Top 10 status.

Is Carlos Rodon a future building block for the rotation?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:11
Yes. Signed for 3 more seasons so I'm sure they see them as a key part of their next contending team. Ideally, they'd add another frontline guy to pair with him and take pressure off their best young guys (Kopech, Cease, Dunning).
Abraves
5:12
Help me understand the Gausman deal.      Why trade for a guy that isn’t an upgrade in your rotation????    Aside from Teheran
AvatarJason Martinez
5:13
He absolutely can be the best guy on that staff. Change of scenery can help. It might not. But he's signed thru '20 so they probably feel like he can at least be a good No. 3/4 guy. And they didn't give up any of their best prospects to get him.

Will Taylor Ward be called up to play 3B soon?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:16
I don't see why not. They'll need to add him to the 40-man roster this offseason, anyways. Might wait until September, though.
Craig
5:17
I like the Moustakas trade from a KC view.  What is your evaluation?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:18
Brett Phillips was considered a Top 100 guy before the season by Baseball Prospectus and Baseball America and he hasn't had a chance to play everyday. So they're getting a potential above-average MLB regular for a 2 month rental. Not bad.
Brad
5:21
Think Kirby Yates is traded this offseason or at next year's trade deadline?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:23
Should have plenty of interest this offseason. My gut feeling is that the Padres think they can make a big move or two this offseason and become, at the least, a .500 team and possibly playoff contender in '19. In that case, they'd probably hold set the price extremely high for Kirby and trade him in July if they're not contenders.

Do you believe the Pirates will try to extend Dickerson after they traded Meadows?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:25
I don't. Too easy to find corner outfielders. They also like Bryan Reynolds, who they got in the McCutchen trade. He could help by mid-'19 or early '20.
