MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: December 26, 2018

Welcome. Hope you're all enjoying the holidays. I'll admit that I am not a big fan. My favorite coffee shop closes for a few days. MLB news slows down. I like that my kids are happy. So it's not like I'm the grinch or anything like that.

See any real traction with the Indians / Padres discussing Kluber or is this more of Preller being in play with 'anybody and everybody'?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:37
Sure, it's not coming out of nowhere. It's no secret that the Indians would be willing to part with Kluber. The Padres want a frontline SP, ideally one that is signed thru at least 2021 and without giving up Tatis. If a team likes any of the Padres' MLB outfielders, that would only sweeten the deal. Indians need an OF or two.
4:38
With any rumor, it's hard to tell if it's something that's heating up or just something that both teams are exploring. All GMs talk and they discuss several potential trades and circle back around later in the offseason.

What does a Padres return look like for Corey Kluber?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:40
I'd guess two of their best pitching prospects would headline that deal and Margot or Renfroe would be also be included. They could also include an MLB reliever and/or another prospect.

How do we get good?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:42
Rebuild should be 3-5 year plan. Need patience. Lose enough games to draft in the top 5 for the next 3 years. Take fliers on bounce-back candidates and flip at trade deadline. Start adding to MLB roster in next 2-3 years.

Which position is my top priority to improve: C, 2B, or SP?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:44
They're good enough at C and SP. Doesn't mean they won't make a move there to get better. I currently have a Cory Spangenberg/Hernan Perez platoon projected at 2B. That's the top priority, in my opinion, although they love Keston Hiura and wouldn't need more than a one-year stop-gap. Kiura could be ready by mid-season. https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-milwaukee-brewers/

Who do you think won the Reds/Dodgers trade and why?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:45
Seems to have fit each team's need. Only way it becomes one-sided is if one of the prospects becomes a star with the Dodgers. Reds are way more interesting now with Puig and Wood gives them another established arm in their rotation. A lot of work to go on both teams.
Any news?
4:46
Have you heard anything about Harper or machado?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:47
Not much, only that the Dodgers' chances have increased on Harper after their latest trade. I still think the Phillies will end up using some of their "stupid money" to sign Harper. Machado to CWS or NYY would be my guess.
Dave Dombrowski

David Robertson, Adam Ottavino or Zach Britton. Which one do I sign?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:49
Britton makes the most sense. All their best relievers are right-handed. Not that it mattered in '18, but I assume they'd want to add a lefty to the mix.

Gio Gonzalez next for the athletics ?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:51
I read that they were looking to add a SP for $5MM or less so I was surprised they re-signed Fiers for 2/$14.1MM. I love the fit for Gio Gonzalez. Maybe they can backload his contract. Not much on the books after '19 ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-oakland-athletics-info/

Can you see the Rockies acquiring David Peralta or Mitch Haniger? Could Jeff Bridich be that bold?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:54
4 years of Haniger will cost a ton. 2 years of Peralta sounds about right. I can see that unless they really want to move Blackmon off of CF. In that case, maybe they go after A.J. Pollock.

Senzel, Schebler, India for Kluber. That should be enough for him right?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:56
Sure. I'd take out Schebler and add either Lorenzen or Amir Garrett. They really need bullpen help and I think they could do better than Schebler on the FA market, especially with Kluber's contract off the books.

If you were Troy Tulowitski, where would you choose to play?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
Whichever team still thinks I can be a starting SS. Simple as that. If there are more than one team, then other factors involved could be coaching staff, city, roster, etc. If no team is giving him a chance to start at SS, I'd go with best opportunity to beat out the guy ahead of me.

Will the Twins sign a closer or will they give May a shot?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:00
I think they'll try to sign one of the closers and settle for someone like Bud Norris or Brad Boxberger. If that ends up being the case, I think it's a competition in Spring Training with May having a realistic chance to win the job.

Jason - Everybody knows stars want to play with stars, and that's usually how a team gets good.  With the M's throwing away all their stars and blue chip trade chips... give me a little hope.  I am not a merry man.

The Mariners are very fast. Very, very fast. Good if you like stolen bases.

Who is my new right fielder on opening day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:03
Harper and Pollock (CF) are great fits. If they're not willing to spend big, I think Nicholas Castellanos is a strong fit in a trade.

Are we done for the offseason and just wait for all are prospects to arrive in early spring
AvatarJason Martinez
5:07
Barring a Stroman trade, which is possible, I think it will be a quiet offseason. I think they'll add some veterans on 1-year deals to help fill out the pitching staff. The good news is that this will be the year that Vlad Jr. arrives in the Majors!!!
Twins are cheap?
5:07
I know there’s money to spend.  Will the Twins actually spend some of it?  Cruz?  Pitching help?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:10
I would think so. They already got their 2B (Schoop) for $7.5MM. Cruz would be about $15MM/season. If they land an established closer like Kelvin Herrera, that would be around $10MM/season. If they want to add a frontline SP like Keuchel, that would be close to $20MM/season. They could probably afford all those options. But a lot of competition so they can't just spend $ to spend it.

ETA for expected 2019 IP/PA on Roster Resource?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:13
By the weekend. I hate not having that for readers to use as context. Adding the projections emphasizes the importance of depth.
Grandal & Moose
5:14
Could Angels get both players on 1 year deals?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:15
I doubt Grandal will have to settle for a 1-year deal. Maybe Moustakas, especially if he wants to play in Southern California (he's from L.A.).

Who do I trade next and to where?
AvatarJason Martinez

EE will get traded. Probably to whichever team doesn't sign Nelson Cruz. My guess is that those two go to TB and MIN.
