MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: January 17, 2018

Hey, we've had some actual roster moves occur since the last chat ... Cutch and Cole traded. Granderson and Bruce sign. Hand and Rivero sign contract extensions. Next move to go down? I'll go with JDM to the Red Sox. Starting to look like they'll be highest bidder and it will be much less than he was hoping for/deserves.

Where is Yu going?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:34
The way things are going, he could fall right into the Yankees' laps. But I'd put my $ on Minnesota.

Who will be the Orioles opening day closer?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:38
Brach. I doubt they'll trade him at this point. With Hand and Rivero likely off the trade block for at least this offseason, I'll do the math ...  one free agent closer available (Holland) and one team who clearly in need of a closer (STL). Even if the Cardinals say they're fine with their bullpen, they know they're not. They also see that the market for Holland isn't good and his price will come down.

Should I get another outfielder or shift my attention to a starting pitcher?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:41
Why not both? Lots of FA options and should get some good value in this market. If I had to guess, I'll go with CarGo and a solid back-of-rotation starter like Vargas, Cahill or Hellickson.

If Nimmo is too much for Harrison, what's my counter?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:46
If they liked Nimmo so much, they wouldn't have re-signed Bruce. With Cespedes, Bruce and Conforto signed long-term, Nimmo doesn't have a future as a MLB regular with the Mets. With that said, maybe they just don't think Harrison is that valuable. At least compared to the potential 2B options (Jose Reyes, Eduardo Nuñez).
Closer for the cardinals?
4:46
You really think Gregerson is gonna be the one the call upon or they gonna finally spend some cash and sign Holland?!
AvatarJason Martinez
4:48
No chance. If they do stand pat because Holland's price doesn't come down enough, it's probably because they think Reyes will be back early in the season and capable of claiming the closing job by June. Even if that's the case, I can't see them not adding another option. I wouldn't trust Gregerson for more than an occasional fill-in closer.

With the $4M-$5M Giants have remaining do you see them trying to address CF, RP, or 5th starter?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:52
Sounds like they plan on adding a CF (Duggar is expected to begin the season in AAA), so I'd expect them to sign Dyson or Jay. I also think they need to add one more starter to battle Stratton, Blach, Beede, Suarez. If they're limited financially, it would be someone coming off of a bad or injury-plagued season (Ricky Nolasco, Scott Feldman, Derek Holland).

Cain to the Jays?  Or did Granderson kill that
AvatarJason Martinez
4:54
They have room for one more OF. Allows Teoscar to get some more time in AAA (he did hit 8 HR in less than 100 PAs, but he also had 6 BB/36 K; not quite ready) and Pearce would be in a utility role (LF/1B/2B/DH) with regular ABs vs LHP.

Any Hosmer news?

Only that Padres owner (Ron Fowler) called their offer a "creative proposal".

Am I likely to land in SF? If not, where?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
They don't have the prospects, although I will admit that I am shocked at how little they gave away to get Cutch and Longoria. They still don't have the prospects to get a young impact player with multiple years of club control.

How much do the Mets really expect from Adrian Gonzalez? He looked toast last year.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:01
He played with a bad back and was eventually shut down because of it. Also had a few other ailments early in the season. Despite his age (35, I think), it's a low-risk move (minimum salary) to find out if he still has anything left in the tank. He had 18 HR, 30+ doubles, 90 RBI in '16. Dude can hit and field his position when healthy.

Do I regret signing Cozart for 3 years if Moustakas ends up signing for 3 or less?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:04
Yeah. At least a little bit. Cozart is solid, but Moustakas would balance out that right-handed heavy lineup. Fans would be a bit more excited with "Mous" coming to So Cal.

I already know Darvish is coming to NYY but what about our 3B hole? Frazier, (Travis Shaw deal) or in house candidates like Miguel Andujar??????
AvatarJason Martinez
5:09
Frazier back to the Yankees is likely. I'm sure he's waiting to see if there will be a better offer, but probably not much of a market. Yankees won't go with 2 kids in their infield so Frazier makes sense. Looks like Gleyber will be the 2B early in the season (early-to-mid May?) and Andujar will get a full season in AAA. Important note: Andujar is only 22 and has only a half-season of AAa under his belt.

Your thoughts on Olney's post about JD?  Crazy that Boston's offer is about half of what Boras was/is trying to get?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:12
Red Sox can see that there isn't much interest for a 30-yr old OF/DH who is seeking $30MM/yr, even if he is one of the better hitters in baseball right now. They're smart to go with a low offer as long as it isn't insulting. And $100MM shouldn't be insulting.

Gonzalez or Gomez for the Rangers? Lind or Duda?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:14
I predicted Cain to the Rangers early on and I have no reason to change my mind. They should pass on another lefty 1B. Let Gallo play there and leave some ABs for Willie Calhoun. He destroyed AAA. 31 HR and only 61 K! Wow.

If you had to choose ROY’s not named Acuna and Ohtani, who would be your picks?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:16
Have to like Ryan McMahon's chances if he wins the 1B job in Colorado. A few others to watch ... Jesse Winker, Brent Honeywell, Stephen Gonsalves, J.P. Crawford, Gleyber Torres.
Add Nick Senzel to that group if he can get the call by early June.

Just how difficult of a situation is Arizona in? Theyre farm is weak, yet it would be hard to justify selling after the season they had. But it seems unlikely they'll be as good next year.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:19
Hard situation to read. I thought they'd parlay all that excitement from JDM and the playoff berth by spending some $ to re-sign him. There's still a chance, but their front office might want to focus more on building the farm and not putting any big contracts on the books that they'll regret in 2-3 years.

5:19
Do you think the Yankees put Stanton in the outfield or DH him?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:21
I'm guessing he gets about half of his ABs as the DH and half in the OF. When he's in the OF, Sanchez or Judge are likely to DH.

Do you JD Martinez will obtain a contract more than 100 million?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:23
I think so. But not that much more. Maybe 5 yrs and $115-$125MM.

5:24
What is your projection for R Hoskins this year?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:25
This is my current projection for Rhys ... .262/.353/.494; 33 HR, 92 RBI. I think he avoids the sophomore slump. I'd be more confident, though, if he was playing 1B and not LF.
