Thanks for stopping by for today's chat.  FYI - I've completed 12 offseason pages at Roster Resource. As a result, I've done significant research on the following teams (in no particular order)  ... PHI, SF, SD, CIN, OAK, TOR, NYM, CWS, BAL, MIL, DET, PIT.
Here's the link to the completed offseason rosters/depth charts ... https://www.rosterresource.com/category/mlb-offseason-2017-18/

Does Justin Upton opt out? If he does where do the Angels go in left field?
AvatarJason Martinez

I think he does. My guess is that he'll get one more year and another $20MM by doing so and I think there's a good chance he stays with the Angels.
So instead of 4 yr, $88MM, I think he opts out and gets 5 yrs and between $100-$110M.

Possible big name targets for the jays this offseason?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:38
Of the teams I've researched thus far, the Jays will be the least desperate for starting pitching. I think they need to add to the bullpen. If they are to add a big name, it will be a corner OF. Maybe Jay Bruce.

Does Tanaka opt out now?  Pitching his guts out this postseason...
AvatarJason Martinez
4:41
Prior to the postseason, I'd lean towards no. Now, I think it's pretty much a lock that he opts out. 3 amazing starts on the big stage does make a huge difference in free agency. Most teams will be looking to upgrade their rotations and only 3 free agents can be considered top-of-the-rotation starters (Arrieta, Darvish, Tanaka). Instead of 3 yr, $67MM, I think he opts out and gets 4-5 years at around $20-22MM per season.

Which starters will the Braves be interested in signing this offseason?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:44
I think they'll be a player for one of the top 3 guys, but I think Arrieta would be their likeliest option. If they miss out on signing an ace, I think they'll consider using some of their prospect depth (their farm system is really good) and try to trade for a young frontline starter (Archer, Stroman).

If a player is a rule 5 pick up do they have to be on the play off roster if there team makes the playoffs?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:45
No. For the team to keep that player's rights, they only have to be on the active roster for 90 days without being sent to the minors. Doesn't even matter if it's during the same season.

Which team is most likely to rebound from 2017 (Orioles, Blue Jays, Mets, Pirates, Giants)
AvatarJason Martinez
4:48
The Mets were decimated by injuries in '17. Still a very good roster on paper with Syndergaard, deGrom and Matz at the front of the rotation, Cespedes/Conforto leading the offense with Dominic Smith/Amed Rosario likely taking a step forward.

I have a feeling that my Indians lose Bruce and Santana. And we decline Brantley's option. What do you think?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:52
A lot of young talent on the way so I think there's a good chance that Bruce and Santana sign elsewhere. I think they exercise Brantley's option because it's only $11MM and they can probably trade him if the OF picture remains crowded. I have a feeling that Kipnis plays in the OF with Yandy Diaz taking over at 3B and Ramirez playing 2B.

I don't understand, if the Braves kick in handsomely, why Matt Kemp is untradeable.  If healthy and not playing the field he could be a great DH.
AvatarJason Martinez
4:56
Agreed. Challenge will be finding one of 15 teams that needs a DH. I think they'll get something done this offseason. Even if Acuña isn't ready for the Majors on Opening Day, I think they'll have a stop-gap option in place. I think Kemp's days in the OF are pretty much over with. And I think DHing on a regular basis will help his performance at the plate.

The Yankees seem to have arrived a few years early.  How dangerous could they be in 2-3 years?
AvatarJason Martinez

They're in great shape. Their farm system is stacked. A lot of $ coming off the books. They'll be able to lock up their young guys to long-term deals. And I think they'll be a frontrunner to sign Otani.

Do you think the Red Sox will add an impact starter this winter?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:02
I don't. If they add an impact player, it will be a power hitter. If Price is healthy, he's that impact starter. I do think they'll add a mid-rotation guy.

Do you think STL can add two high impact players? Maybe Donaldson and Stanton/Martinez?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:05
I think they're good for one big trade (they have enough elite prospects to get something done) and one big FA signing. I do think that signing will be a closer, though.

Any chance Pillar is dealt?  Then chances to the Giants?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:10
I'm sure the Jays will be willing to listen on any player. Giants need an OF and, ideally, will move Span to LF so a guy like Pillar could be a target for CF. But I think the asking price for Pillar would include a prospect who is better than any that the Giants have.

How about a Kemp for Ellsbury trade?  Kemp DH for the Yanks...
AvatarJason Martinez
5:13
Don't think so. If you figure that Gardner, Hicks and Judge are the starting OFs, then you need to find ABs for Clint Frazier. The DH will help in that regard. And they'll want to give DH at-bats to Gary Sanchez when he's not catching.

Could the Mets trade for Kinsler, Gordon, or Kipnis?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:16
I'm assuming no big trades from the Mets this offseason. Their farm system is very thin. Not much left after Smith and Rosario graduated to the Majors ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-new-york-mets/
5:21
On a related note, the Mets do have a prospect with one of the best names in baseball. Cannon Chadwick was a 9th round pick in '17. He had a 1.33 ERA and 13.3 K/9 in Short-Season Brooklyn. I really hope he makes it the Big Leagues someday, but I'd be disappointed if he doesn't throw at least 97MPH.

Which American player has a chance coming back to the states and being successful
AvatarJason Martinez
5:23
Lots of buzz surrounding former Padres and Rangers reliever Miles Mikolas. He's had 3 consecutive strong seasons as a SP in Japan.

Could you see Shelby Miller as a possible trade candidate?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:24
Questionable to pitch at all in '18 makes it doubtful that any team will trade for him.

How do you like ARod and Papi combo on TV?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:28
I'm a fan. Pretty obvious that their knowledge of hitting is a big reason why they were so good. Also pretty clear that they can talk about hitting/baseball all day long and never get bored.

Does Price bounce back next year? How concerned are they about his elbow?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:30
They should be very concerned. I think they'll be cautious and be open to keeping him in the 'pen. Not sure if that would make a difference. In any case, they'll focus on improving depth just in case he isn't able to give them many innings.
