If they're rebuilding, I think they'd shop everyone. If the plan is to try and build a playoff contender in '17, wouldn't make a lot of sense. It's not like they have a shortstop, or much else, close to arriving in the majors.

Not really. Marlins don't have much help on the way and Prado is a solid player. Should be able to maintain current productivity thru age 35 season.

I would love to have Stanton but I think Freeman is a better investment. Cheaper. Stanton gets hurt a lot.

Why activate Sonny Gray now? Is there a benefit to giving one start with a strict pitch count right before the off season?

No idea. Maybe they're confident that he's 100%. A bit concerning to have a guy going into the offseason with a forearm/elbow injury. You have no idea if that's going to come up again next spring or during the season. It often does.

I think his value went up substantially. A guy with closer potential who dominated for 40.1 innings. I don't think they'd trade him, though. I think he could be their closer in '17.

The guys on the field don't hate the Red Sox like fans do. No such thing as a team playing badly for any reason. The players are all trying to increase their value by playing well whether their team is good or not.

Yes. 1 yr, $10MM is a bargain after the season he's had. I also think the Cubs have any young prospects ready to step in to his rotation spot next season.

Of course. I would fall asleep listening to him broadcast games when I was a kid. Dodgers games started 30 minutes later back in those days so I'd tune in after the Padres game ended to hear him call the last few innings. Reception for a L.A. radio station wasn't very good but I didn't really care.

I think so. And they'll have a chance to win it all again with MadBum and Cueto leading the way. Their bullpen isn't nearly as dependable as the '10, '12, '14 teams. That's why I wouldn't pick them.

Sure. Would be fun to watch Bourjos and Trout in the outfield. They cover so much ground, the Angels could go with a 2-man outfield and 5 infielders.

No. They're good enough that one player won't make a huge difference. But if Harper and Murphy aren't 100% and with Strasburg unavailable, at least thru the NLDS, it's going to be tough.

Sounds like they want to improve their defense. Adding a good defensive CF and moving Grichuk to a corner is likely. Maybe try to find a taker for Jhonny Peralta and have Gyorko play 3B.

Thoughts on the Padres future?

Solid core of position players: Margot, Renfroe, Myers, Schimpf, Solarte, Hedges, Asuaje. We'll see how quickly Preller can build a good pitching staff. Long way to go, but I'm a cautiously optimistic Padres fan.

Is a Dozier trade a real possibility ? Vinnie Velasquez ,Cesar plus minor leaguers enough ?

I think it's possible. Would be a high price. Velasquez and Hernandez have a ton of value, so I'm sure it would at least start the conversation. I don't think the Phillies are ready to start trading away their best young players, though. Always best to do that when you're just a player or two away from being a WS contender. Phillies are not there.
