Thanks for stopping by. A lot has happened since our last chat, the one that I concluded by predicting that the Astros would acquire Justin Verlander at the last minute. Over 300 roster moves in September. Post-season is almost here. Offseason is two months away!!!

Which teams have the best chance to take down the Dodgers and Astros in October?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:36
Don't see either team having an easy time of things. Should be some great SP match-ups. The Nats with Scherzer-Strasburg-Gio or the Cubs with Arrieta, Lester, Quintana will be pretty tough. Same with the D'Backs with Greinke, Ray, Corbin. Indians are probably the team to beat, in my opinion.

How am I not the MVP?
AvatarJason Martinez

If you're not, you just picked the wrong year to do what you're doing. Too many other great candidates (Votto, Stanton, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Blackmon).

thoughts on the piece that came over for Miguel Gonzalez?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:39
As would be expected. Low-level prospect (TiQuan Forbes) not putting up good numbers but has some upside.

If the Reds determine they can at least be competitive next year, what move(s) must they make?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:41
They need 2 starting pitchers (one should be a frontline starter) and maybe one more late-inning reliever. They have enough offense. They'll need at least 2 of their young guys to take a step forward. It would help if Bailey can bounce back and DeSclafani can get healthy.

Any thoughts on Juan Nicasio?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:44
Hard to be critical without knowing what kind of offers the Pirates got from the team that claimed him. Maybe they offered nothing of value. Phillies ended up with a decent prospect (Eliezer Hernandez; 22 yr old 2B who made the jump from LoA to AA this season) by trading him today.

Does Votto make it back to the playoffs as a Red?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:46
He's owed 6/$157MM for his ages 34-39 seasons. Even if he is one of the best players in baseball right now, it would hard to move him. So I don't think he's going anywhere. And I think the Reds can be playoff contenders in 1-2 years.

Why did the marlins trade Castillo? Seems like a good starting pitcher?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:48
He was pretty much the only prospect with value and they were desperate for another SP who could help now. Traded him in the Cashner deal and got him back when they found out Colin Rea needed TJ surgery. It's clear that they didn't think he was this close to being good.

Biggest surprise (positive) team for you on the season? Most disappointing team?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:49
Twins, by far, are the biggest surprise. They're still not that impressive on paper and they could go to the playoffs.
4:50
Biggest disappointments are Tigers and Giants.

What do you think of the dodgers late skid?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:52
Playing that well wasn't going to last. Better it happens now than once the playoffs start. As long as Kershaw is healthy and Darvish is back on track, they should be fine in October.

4:53
Quintin Berry call-up for the Brew Crew; a power move or nah?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:53
Berry is the ultimate pinch-running specialist. Seems like he gets the September call-up every year just for that reason.
Darrell Winch
4:53
Roberto Osuna is struggling in the closer role right now in the Blue Jays bullpen.  He throws 4-5 different pitches, not usual for bullpen arms and doesn't seem to be throwing his 95mph 4 seamer as much anymore.  Any thought about making him a starter for 2018 and beyond?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:55
He's only 22 and will have 3 years of club control remaining. If they're going to do it, would have to be next spring. But are there any examples of this actually going well? Neftali Feliz comes to mind. So does Brandon Morrow.
Danny
4:57
What are your thoughts on the odds Ryan Braun is moved this off season? Especially with Villar getting more PT in the OF and Brinson and Phillips right on the verge?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:57
I think the selling point for Braun to waive his no-trade clause was that they were rebuilding. But this is a very good roster. I doubt he's going anywhere. There is a bit of an outfield logjam, though. More likely that Villar or one of their OFs are traded.
Matt
4:58
Will the Cubs put Arrieta on DL or with expanded rosters is that not necessary?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
Since his timeframe to return was 7-10 days, they probably won't.
Nathan
4:59
Do the Giants have enough pieces to land Stanton?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
Not even close.
Ian
5:00
Who will be the most high profile callup in the rest of the month?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:01
Probably the Rays' Willy Adames once Durham's season ends.
Rob
5:01
Do you think the Padres call up Joey Lucchesi before the end of season or does he wait for a Spring 2018 invite?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:02
Probably gets a ST invite and most likely a mid-season call-up. He can force his way to the Majors as early as late April if he keeps doing what he's doing.
Michael from Minnesota
5:04
Looking to the offseason - will Minnesota go after another starter to solidify the top of the rotation as their younger arms begin to come of age?  Alex Cobb a possibility?  We cannot expect anything from Phil Hughes and Santiago is as good as gone unless he comes back on a team-friendly deal.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:05
Someone reliable to go along with Santana/Berrios. Cobb and Lance Lynn definitely fit that description. That's a good start with that trio and with the young guys who are on the way (Gonsalves, Romero).
Jenny
5:06
Who makes their debut first; Kyle Tucker or Forrest Whitley?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:06
Tucker. Teams are much more cautious with pitching prospects. Both moving quickly, though.
Ian
5:08
Will Walker Beuhler open next season in the rotation?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:09
No. He'll probably finish at about 100 IP this season so there shouldn't be any expectation that he can make 28+ starts and throw 160+ innings. No reason to rush him back to the majors unless he continues in a relief role. My guess is that he'll continue to develop as a starter and will be in the Majors by mid-season (earlier if he's a reliever).
