MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 12/19/16

Steve Adams
3:08
Greetings! Chatting on Monday this week instead of my usual Tuesday slot, as I'll be traveling tomorrow. We'll get started in a minute here.
Joe
3:09
If traded where could Antonio Bastardo go?
Steve Adams
3:10
Blue Jays still need left-handed help in the bullpen -- probably two arms. Marlins have done a lot in their bullpen already but still only have Cervenka and Araujo there for lefties.
Joe
3:10
Tyson Ross to the Pirates a possibility?
Steve Adams
3:11
Probably not if he's actually aiming for $9-11MM on a one-year deal. If that drops by $4-5MM, it'd make more sense for Pittsburgh.
Ballz McGee
3:11
Where does Travis Wood sign?
Steve Adams
3:13
Still like the idea of him going to San Diego since they don't have much in their rotation at all, but they may be against adding long-term commitments to the books during their rebuild. I think he signs as a starter somewhere and has to get at least two years -- probably three. Yankees could use an arm in the rotation, as could the Mariners. Astros could make some sense if they can't find an arm on the trade market and want to try to get a bit creative.
Neil
3:13
What players are available for the Reds to rebuild their bullpen?
Steve Adams
3:15
There are still tons of relievers out there -- Daniel Hudson, Neftali Feliz, Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, the list goes on -- but I wouldn't expect the Reds to sign anyone until January/February. There's no reason for them to pay top dollar for guys right now... the relief market's going to crumble eventually -- it does every winter -- and Cincinnati will be able to get some guys on cheap-ish deals down the line.
Greg
3:15
What would a Quintana to Yankees trade look like?
Steve Adams
3:16
I'm sure the White Sox will (or already have) asked about Sanchez, which will get a firm no. It'd be close to as much as the Red Sox gave up for Chris Sale, if not more. Quintana is owed about the same amount of money but is signed for an extra season... you're talking Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier types of prospects as headliners plus a few more guys further down the system but still comfortably ranked in the Yankees' top 10-15 prospects.
In other words, more than the Yankees really care to surrender, most likely. I don't think it happens.
Evan
3:17
Does Mateo, Sheffield and one more lower prospect land the Yankees Quintana?
Steve Adams
3:17
Nope.
Trog
3:17
When will the 1B/DH market begin to unclog? January?
Steve Adams
3:18
It'll be jammed up for most of the winter -- but yeah some of those names will start coming off the board mid-January, early February. I bet a few will still be unsigned in Spring Training and looking where they can latch on after a spring injury.
Jacob B.
3:18
Can the Royals come back in the AL Central or is Cleveland running away with the division?
Steve Adams
3:19
I don't think they have the pitching unless Strahm really takes off in the rotation. The Indians are just so much better than every team in that division right now, barring injuries. Plus, if Kansas City moves another veteran or two in an attempt to pare down payroll, it's tough to see them projecting better than they do right now.
Ian
3:19
Any chance at all that Encarnacion signs a very short term deal to play third base? Thinking about maybe the Mets or Cards.
Steve Adams
3:20
Encarnacion's nickname prior to moving to first base was "E5" for a reason. He was a terrible defensive third baseman even in his 20s, and he's not going to be passable there now.
Marty
3:21
Where does Quintana wind up?
Steve Adams
3:22
He doesn't have to end up anywhere this winter. They can hold him until July or until next offseason without really diminishing his value at all. I can still see the Astros circling back or see the Dodgers getting more serious, but it's not going to happen unless someone gives a Sale-esque package.

3:23
If Angels miss playoffs again this coming year, will they at least have assets to trade off at deadline in hopes of helping a weak farm system?
Steve Adams
3:25
Yeah they'll have some -- Trout's still not going to be put on the table, but they have enough short-term veterans that you can see one of them holding some decent value (Maybin, Chavez, Yunel, Nolasco, Street, Bailey)... and guys like Shoemaker and Skaggs came up this year even. Just depends how much they're willing to part with in terms of controllable talent.
Ian
3:25
Skiiing or Snowboarding?
Steve Adams
3:25
Neither, though I've at least been skiing.
Jerry dipoda
3:26
Do u think the mariners can sign jose bautista?
Steve Adams
3:26
If he ends up going short-term, sure, but it'd have to be a pretty favorable deal. Dipoto emphasizes defense, and adding Bautista means you're going to use some combo of him and Cruz in the outfield almost every day.
Tommy
3:26
Next pitching pick up for Angels?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't think it's going to be anyone all that high-profile -- another arm that can start and relieve makes sense. Yusmeiro Petit?
Franklin
3:27
Any rumors about Adam Lind? It's been a pretty quiet winter for him it seems.
Steve Adams
3:28
Lind is part of that first base/outfield logjam that I was talking about before... there are so many guys with his skill set out there, that it's tough to get teams to decide they want to spend there right now. Mid-January some of those names will probably start seeing some traction, but I wouldn't expect Lind to get mire than $5-6MM on a one-year deal, and it would well be less than that.
Josh
3:28
Could the Pirates pursue Jose Quintana?
Steve Adams
3:29
They have the pieces to do so, and he's reasonably within their financial price range, but they'd have to be willing to give up someone like Glasnow or Taillon as a headliner plus tons of other near-MLB-ready talent. Glasnow and Meadows (plus some lower names) would be a tough pill for the Bucs to swallow, for instance.
General Manager
3:30
Jose Bautista to the Giants?
Steve Adams
3:30
I can get behind that fit if it's a one-year deal. Giants wouldn't be wild about playing him in left field for the next 2-3 years though, I'm sure.
ChiSox fan
3:31
Todd Frazier to the Tribe for Bradley Zimmer or Francisco Meija possible?
Steve Adams
3:31
Sox aren't getting either of those guys for one year of Frazier.
Anthony
3:32
Am I crazy to believe that Yoan Mocanda will be the Chi Sox 2017 opening day center fielder?
Steve Adams
3:32
Pretty sure they've already said they plan on using him at second base.
