MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 4/4/17

Steve Adams
3:04
Heyyyy there's baseball on my TV these days. Life's grand. I'll get started in a minute, but start firing questions away.
Bobby
3:06
Will Raisel Iglesias get the bulk of the saves for the Reds this year?
Steve Adams
3:06
If I had to guess who'll finish the season with the most in Cincinnati, it'd be Iglesias (health permitting), but Lorenzen will get his fair share of saves as well given the hybrid roles the Reds are going to use for both of them.
G Money
3:07
Is Graveman a must add in 10 team?
Steve Adams
3:07
Nah -- not even in 12-teamers, unless he suddenly maintains the strikeouts
Eric L
3:07
Hi what your opinion of the Yadier Molina deal
Steve Adams
3:09
The Cardinals paid far more for Molina's legacy and the marketing/PR considerations than his actual market value would've been. That doesn't make it an awful deal for them or anything, but Molina had plenty of red flags in recent years and will be 38 when the deal's done.

I get it, but I do feel they paid at a top-of-the-market rate, and while it's impossible to quantify some of the reasons that the Cardinals love Molina -- clubhouse presence, leadership, game-calling, etc. -- I have a hard time seeing his on-field performance justify that expenditure, given his age.
3:10
But, it's obviously one of the more unique situations in the game, and the Cards were in kind of a weird spot.

3:10
Aside from Quintana, who are a few other impact SPs that could move?
Steve Adams
3:10
Ervin Santana, Jeremy Hellickson, Sonny Gray (if healthy), Jake Odorizzi, Alex Cobb
Daniel
3:10
Adam Lind: the biggest steal of free agency?
Steve Adams
3:11
Biggest steal is a stretch - haven't given much thought to that actually -- but hard to complain about getting him for a $1.5MM guarantee.
Dalton S
3:12
Do you see the Cards going after a starter via trade (Quintana or someone less costly) ? And could he be had without giving up Alex Reyes?
Steve Adams
3:13
They'll try to make things work with the internal options they have for the time being. It's certainly possible to get Quintana without Reyes... other prospects will emerge/break out early in the season, and the Cardinals have other intriguing young pieces like Carson Kelly, Luke Weaver, etc. I wouldn't expect them to do anything significant in the season's first month or two though
SoCalDude
3:13
O/U: 110 losses for the Padres this season?
Steve Adams
3:14
They'll be bad, but not that bad I don't think. Some interesting young talent there with a couple of good, already-established guys like Solarte and Myers. Pitching will be V ugly though.
Joel Porter
3:14
no more intentional walks... will that be forever or will they change it back someday ?
Steve Adams
3:15
I doubt they'll change it back. It hardly impacts the game, though, so I still don't really get why they changed it in the first place. Making that alteration in the name of "pace of play" is like handing me a children's Spongebob bandaid after I accidentally chop my thumb off while making dinner. (That was a weird analogy, but I'm sticking with it)
Tampa Bay
3:16
You like our chances for a wild card spot? We looked good on Sunday...
Steve Adams
3:16
I think the Rays will be better than a lot of people give them credit heading into the season, but I'm not picking them for a Wild Card spot
Mile rizzo
3:16
Thoughts on Blake Treinen?
Steve Adams
3:18
Guy slings it 95-98 mph with huge sink and a ground-ball rate around 60-65 percent. I'm a little wary of the walks and think that'll lead to some blow-ups here and there, but if he can rein in the control, he could be very, very good. I always found the "Nats need a proven closer!" narrative to be kind of silly. I like Treinen just fine for the role
Simon
3:19
any of the remaining free agent starters going to mets in your opinion after the last few days bad news?
Steve Adams
3:20
If Doug FIster is willing to pitch in the minors for a few weeks, I suppose he'd make sense. Mets fans will line up outside my apartment with pitchforks and torches for this comment, but hey Pelfrey's available!
3:21
All that said, I found it pretty surprising that a team with this type of injury history traded Gabriel Ynoa for a PTBNL/cash. I thought there were easier players on the 40-man to jettison, and that extra depth wouldn't be bad right now
Alec Masher
3:21
What do you think about the Alec Asher trade/Tyler Goeddel DFA for the Phils? To me it's an unnecessary waste of talent, especially to make room for Daniel Nava and Brock Stassi
Steve Adams
3:23
Asher wouldn't have been bad to have around as a depth option, but the Phils have tons of other upper-level arms in Thompson, Lively, Eflin, Appel, etc.

I never really got the Goeddel love that some Phils fans were giving him last year. Whenever I'd say that Biagini and Perdomo were the best Rule 5 picks in 2015, I'd get some Phillies fans in these chats harping about Goeddel. He didn't perform at all and may very well pass through waivers.
Greg
3:23
If it was up to you, would you sign Arrieta to an extension?
Steve Adams
3:23
Not at the Scherzer/Price-beating number I'm sure him and Boras are targetig.
Will B
3:24
Thoughts on the piscotty extension? Seems if they overpaid for yadi they got piscotty for a steal
Steve Adams
3:25
I dig the Piscotty extension, yeah. There's not a lot of downside with those types of pre-arb deals -- even the ones that blow up are manageable -- and I do like Piscotty's bat quite a bit. Plus they kept him south of even Gregory Polanco money even though Piscotty topped 20 HR last season and Polanco hit just nine in the season before he inked his deal (hat tip: MLBTR's Tim Dierkes for that point)... they did well there.
Legs Larry Smith
3:26
Does McCarthy hit the market when Urias is ready to go? See any good fits?
Steve Adams
3:27
That assumes that McCarthy, and the rest of the LAD rotation for that matter, will be healthy at that point. I wouldn't make that leap with McCarthy, Ryu and Hill all occupying rotation slots.
Michael
3:27
What about Chris Archer as a impact SP on the move?
Steve Adams
3:28
He'll be in rumors all summer -- I just don't find it plausible that he'll be moved because the amount of talent required to pry away Archer when he has five years of ridiculously cheap control remaining will be so astounding.
3:30
Archer is guaranteed $20.25MM over the next three years and has two club options that total $20MM. Subtracting the buyout on the first option (as it's included in that three-year guarantee sum), he can be had for five years and $38.5MM, and he's still only 28. We're talking Chris Sale package to get him. Hell I think he should command more than Sale did.
Seth A
3:30
Would Cubs bad AB's and K's concern you? Especially after losing a guy who always has good AB's and was the offensive catalyst for them the last couple years in Fowler? Fear his loss was bigger than people are expecting.
Steve Adams
3:32
I wouldn't get overly concerned about anything you see in the first week or two, unless it's injury-related. There will be all kinds of guys who have ugly starts and tons of ugly stats, but 99% will be forgotten by the time the season wraps up. I don't think losing Fowler is going to make the Cubs' entire roster suddenly forget how to bring a decent approach to the plate
Fan
3:32
Padres worst team this year?
Steve Adams
3:32
They are my pick to select #1 overall in 2018 -- sorry San Diego fans. (Or congrats? Depends on your preference I suppose -- some Pads fans have understandably been pining for a full tear-down for years)
