Hello and welcome to another chat!
6:02
I'll let some things come in and get started in a few minutes
John
6:13
Will the Caps protect oshie in the expansion draft?
Gavin Lee
6:13
I have a hard time believing that they would leave him unprotected
6:14
I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason Alex Ovechkin hasn't signed yet is because then they would need to protect him.
Him being a "free agent" will help the Caps

Hi, Gavin.  How much of Canada (outside of Montreal) is pulling for the Canucks to go on a run for the 4th seed?
Gavin Lee
6:15
I don't think anyone has done a head count, but it would be a great story wouldn't it
I should point out that they still got dominated both games against the Maple Leafs, but the goaltending tilted way in their favor.
6:16
That said, they don't need to catch Toronto, just two other floundering teams
Felix Potvin
6:16
I thought Jack Campbell was the Leafs best goaltender since...me...What is the Leaf's plan in net for the rest of the regular season?
Gavin Lee
6:16
I think the plan is still Campbell for now
It will take some complicated maneuvering to get Andersen back on the roster under the cap
6:18
I know Campbell hasn't been good, but let's remember that all goaltenders have some stinkers.
Toronto fans need to ride the wave a little better

What do you think adam fox salary cap will be and cale makar
Gavin Lee
6:19
These will be interesting situations to monitor, because despite both being in their sophomore seasons, they're in different contract situations.
6:20
Fox's entry-level deal doesn't expire until after next season, meaning he'll have three full years of service and production to leverage
Makar is up at the end of this season, with just 88 regular season games so far.
6:21
At the end of the day it might not end up meaning a whole lot, if both teams extend them long-term
6:22
But Colorado could potentially slow play the negotiations--Makar isn't arbitration eligible so if he wants to play, they could technically force him to take his qualifying offer or chase an offer sheet.
6:23
In terms of cap hit, it depends a lot on how long they sign for. But ultimately I think Makar may become the highest-paid defenseman in the league (or very close to it) in short order. Something like an Auston Matthews deal

6:23
Great year by Jason Robertson. Who is the better player him or nick?
Gavin Lee
6:23
Well certainly right now it's Jason
6:24
Nick Robertson gets a lot of hype for his post-draft OHL season, and rightly so, he scored 55 goals in 46 games....but remember that his brother scored 42 for Kingston the season BEFORE being drafted.
6:25
I think both are top-six options eventually
The size of Jason probably tips the scale in the end
Ron Duguay
6:26
What is John Cooper's contract?  Any chance he moves on from Tampa (on his terms) to coach elsewhere?
Gavin Lee
6:26
I believe he is signed through the end of next season
Always a chance he moves on, but that's a pretty sweet situation to be in.
Dan
6:26
What are your thoughts on Troy Terry this year?  Has he gotten to the point of top 6 forward?  How about Comtois and Lundestrum?  Where are they at, in your eyes?  And last one - does Steel ever reach his potential?  Thanks for the insights!
Gavin Lee
6:26
I love how consistent our Ducks fans are in these chats
6:27
I think I have basically given weekly updates on those guys for the past two years
To continue that, I have never thought any of those guys (plus Max Jones) were really anything special.
6:28
Comtois has continued to surprise me with his offensive performance, but at the end of the day I really still don't see him as a star
6:29
One thing that could help is Zegras taking on more attention, Comtois can thrive in a support role.
But Steel? I just don't know if he's a top-six NHL center, and I don't know if he fits any lower than that

Isn't funny that a so called soft player like Patrick Marleau stayed healthy and productive enough to surpass Mr. Hockey's games play record (not to mention that Marleau has an impressive iron man streak OR games lost due to lock outs and Covid)?  This record is a big deal.
Gavin Lee
6:30
There is a story somewhere (or probably several) detailing how committed Marleau was to his recovery and body maintenance right from the very beginning of his career. He takes ice baths between every single period, for instance.
6:31
But he didn't just start that when he turned 34 and started to break down, he was doing it from the time he was a teenager. That work has paid off (with some luck).
