Hello all! I'll leave until the half hour to get some questions in, then get rolling for about an hour.
12:30
Alright, let's get started!
Doublek

Free agent signing that didn’t work out this year? Mine would have to be Ryan Graves in Pitt
Josh Erickson
12:31
That's certainly the worst one I can think of, although there were a few other stinkers
Zucker/Dumba in Arizona is one. Regardless of their play, the returns they netted the Yotes at the deadline was abysmal

12:32
You can't sign actual good players to one-year deals for the purpose of trading them as rentals and then get a 5th and 6th back. Reporting indicates it wasn't Bill Armstrong's fault entirely... ownership prevented him from retaining salary
But still. That whole ordeal just seemed pretty pointless to me
12:33
Justin Holl might be a worse pickup than Graves now that I think about it. Barely in the lineup at this point and he still has two years left
wreckage
12:33
Brown in Edmonton worst FA of this offseason.
Josh Erickson
12:34
Valuable shoutout too, although they had the chance to absolve themselves if they waived him before he hit his games played performance bonus
So I don't think the signing itself was that bad, rather the managerial decision to keep him and invoke the inevitable cap penalty next season when it was clear he wasn't going to work out
wreckage
12:35
Is Crosby currently a top 5 player of all time?
Josh Erickson
12:36
I would say so. Although I'd have him 5 and it depends how much you value goalies
And I think when McDavid's career is said and done he'll have that spot
12:37
The gap between Lemieux and Gretzky is closer than the gap between Lemieux and whoever you think number 3 is. I don't think people realize how even the two were when Mario was healthy
wreckage
12:37
Gretzky, Lemuiex, Orr, Howe...
Josh Erickson
12:38
Yeah I'd have him 5 after these guys
Dan
12:38
assuming the ducks get the 3rd pick at draft, what do you think they do? As of now, who’d their target be? Thanks!
Josh Erickson
12:39
If you look at Bob McKenzie's scout polling (last done in January, to be fair), the no. 3 pick there is blue-liner Artyom Levshunov out of Michigan State
12:40
Ivan Demidov was at 6 in that polling. Given how he ended the season, you have to think he's higher by now. I think he's the second-best player in the draft behind Celebrini, so if he doesn't go 2, that's who I'm picking. Am I confident Verbeek would if he's there? No
12:43
His selection of Carlsson spoke volumes about the types of elite players he wants to build around, and even if Demidov is the best pure talent available, he doesn't quite fit that mold. I would think 6'7" D Anton Silayev is the pick if he doesn't go second. I don't think they draft another center, so I'm not sure Cayden Lindstrom is in the conversation, and Cole Eiserman has too much floating around him to go in the top 3 at this point

Is there any hope that SJS isn't in a Buffalo style 15 year rebuild? Can you make sense of the Hertl trade?
Josh Erickson
12:43
Yes to the first and no to the second!
12:44
I say yes because, for all of the (some deserved) flak Grier has gotten, they've drafted quite well over the past few years. Not the best in the league, but quite well.
12:47
Eklund will be the real deal. Give him a couple of years. Smith was a slam-dunk pick. I've liked Gushchin a lot for a while. And my personal favorite – Luca Cagnoni on defense, absolutely tearing it up with WHL Portland this year. They took him in the fourth round last year; I had him ranked in my late first. Great value selection and a future 2LD long-term, I think. They do still need a bonafide top-pairing guy on defense, though, easily the biggest weakness in that pool. If not Silayev (who I don't think is quite worthy of a top-5 pick), then I'd like to see them take a flyer on Levshunov or another spectacular collegiate D, Zeev Buium. But if they end up with the chance to take Celebrini or Demidov, you have to take it
wreckage
12:47
Hertl trade was to free up space so they can go big fish hunting in FA in thr next season or 2.
Josh Erickson
12:48
And to toss this onto Hertl, players still have to want to come to the market. I can't imagine they'll be in a good enough place that quickly to attract that type of talent, regardless of how they're paying. I think the state tax argument is generally overblown but is a significant enough thing in CA

Hertl is a big fish on a reasonable contract...
Josh Erickson
12:48
That too! He was far and away their best player and wasn't on a terrible deal by any means
Vegas Rocks
12:49
Golden Knights will obviously sign Hanifin.  Rumor is he turned down 7.5 x 7yrs.  Maybe 8 X 8 with no NV income tax does it?
Josh Erickson
12:49
I'd be shocked if he gets more than 8x8 as a UFA, so yes. He had 7.5x8 on the table from CGY which I don't think was ever explicitly turned down, although details are fuzzy. Flames pulled the offer once they started sliding a few months in
wreckage
12:50
Will the Flames go off the board and take Tij early and have it possibly blow up in their faces just because of the nostalgia factor?
Josh Erickson
12:51
I don't think it would necessarily be an off-the-board pick. If the draft was today and there's no lottery BS, they would be picking 11th. A little high, but not completely off the board. McKenzie's Jan. polling had Tij at 16, consolidated public ranking has him at 14
Range of his public rankings on Elite Prospect is anywhere between 11 and 23, although one site has him at 31, but pretty much everywhere in the mid-teens
12:52
*Elite Prospects
12:53
I do think there will be better options available in that range, however. But it would be awesome to see him end up in CGY
Mike
12:53
Besides celebrini who do you see as high end top 6 forwards or top 2 D in their NHL careers?
Josh Erickson
12:54
My love for Demidov is no secret, so there's that. I think this draft is quite deep at the top.
12:55
In terms of other forwards I'm almost certain will be long-term top-6 guys, I'd still have Eiserman in that category, even if he's not the 2nd overall pick everyone thought a few months ago. He's still the best pure sniper in the draft
