Pre-Deadline Chat Bonanza Extraordinaire And Other Superlatives

Welcome to the pre-deadline chat bonanza extraordinaire (and other superlatives)!

Yes, I apparently felt the need to entertain myself in titling this week's chat.
No, I do not know where [insert player] is going to land at the moment. Quite likely, neither does the GM of his current team!

Let's do this.

Will the Mets trade Stroman?
Steve Adams
12:36
I still just can't fully buy that they're not going to move him. The Mets, under Brodie, float a whole lot of ideas and narratives through the media (every team does, but they seem particularly apt to do this -- or at least more transparent about it), so I can see the whole "they're not flipping him" as some kind of litmus test.

The fact that they paid what is widely believed to be a light price to acquire him makes it unfathomable to me that they wouldn't listen. I mean, say the Twins had been willing to offer something like Brusdar Graterol and another mid-range prospect for Stroman when the Jays had him (just a speculative example, mind you) ... if you're the Jays, you're not turning Kay/Simeon Woods into that?

They're crazy if they're not open-mindedly fielding offers.

Can the tigers package Boyd plus for a premium bat?
Steve Adams
12:37
They should be (and have been) asking for a premium young bat -- and then some -- for Boyd on his own.

Thaiss, Jones, one other top 30 club prospect for Bauer. Who says no?
Steve Adams
12:38
Unless that other top 30 club prospect is ranked higher than Matt Thaiss or Jahmai Jones, that's not getting Bauer.

Will Dodgers land a closer?
Steve Adams
12:39
They're not boxing themselves into identifying guys who've been arbitrarily put into the ninth-inning role. They'll absolutely land a reliever or two, though. I don't buy the Felipe Vazquez talk that has persisted for the past month, fwiw
Well -- I buy that they, like every other team in the game, would love to have him (and, as importantly, that hilariously club friendly contract)
Just not that the Buccos are particularly motivated or even willing to move him

Do you think this deadline is going to remain relatively slow or will we get a huge flurry at the very end (possibly because of it being a harder deadline)?
Steve Adams
12:40
I think there will be 24 hours -- more like 12 hours -- of sheer freaking chaos.
Big Swole
12:40
Will Newcomb ever be a starter again?
Steve Adams
12:41
Doubt it for this season but yeah I think the Braves (or another club) would take a look at him in that role again.

What are the ChiSox doing? Feels like I've heard zero rumors about them
Steve Adams
12:44
They don't have much to sell and aren't in a position to add too much (unless it's controllable well beyond 2020).

For as much as South Side fans love Alex Colome, he just hasn't pitched that great in 2019. The ERA is shiny, and the 21-for-22 in saves is good. Ten years ago, he'd have had older-school GMs tripping over themselves to land him.

Now, teams are going to see a guy with a career-worst K%, a ridiculously low BABIP (.150), a fluky high strand rate (83%) and a forthcoming arbitration raise that'll push his salary north of $10MM+. No one's giving up a premium return for that.

As for Abreu, I'd be pretty surprised if he's not under contract for the Sox again in 2020 (and beyond), so I don't think they'll move him.

12:44
Is Frazier and Garcia enough for the yankees to get bauer?
Steve Adams
12:45
It'd be hard for the Indians to pass on Clint Frazier and Deivi Garcia as headliners, though they might want some lower-end minor league pieces in that deal (perhaps going both ways).
Chad
12:45
Think Cards can land a bat or possibly starting pitcher?
Steve Adams
12:45
Starter and a reliever both seem likelier than adding another bat to me.

12:46
Why are the dodgers fooling around with Diaz. They need a left hander
Steve Adams
12:46
Who cares what hand a guy throws with when he's held lefties to a .175/.276/.306 line in his career?
Dustin
12:46
Will the Brewers add anything before the deadline?
Steve Adams
12:48
Already added Lyles, which won't excite anyone, but I don't mind that addition and think he can rebound there to an extent. I can see them getting another rental arm but maybe not anyone all that exciting. They don't seem like they'll let the context of the division force them into an overpay situation.

12:48
Which Mets pieces are most likely to get moved?
Steve Adams
12:51
Wheeler, Diaz, Syndergaard, then Stroman in order of likelihood for me. I think they should be willing (if not motivated) to move each, though it's not clear that's how they feel with Stroman.

They can do a very quick turnaround without needing a full rebuild. Get some MLB-ready pieces for that bunch, plug them in around Alonso, McNeil, Conforto, deGrom... spend (more wisely) in free agency in the winter.

12:51
Will Eovaldi ever resume starting roles this season?
Steve Adams
12:51
I think he's in the bullpen for the year
Butter
12:52
What about Ian Kennedy to the Braves or another contender?
Steve Adams
12:52
Not if the Royals aren't willing to pay down his salary, which seems to be the case. I don't get that one.
Mike Trout
12:53
Will my legacy be slightly tarnished at all if I never have team success?
Steve Adams
12:53
Not Trout's fault he's been surrounded by mediocre rosters.
Jesse
12:53
Your best guess as to what the Rangers are going to do? Team has faltered in the playoff race now they have lots of pieces to move but no movement (Mike Minor, Lance Lynn, Jose Leclerc, Hunter Pence, Danny Santana, Logan Forsythe, Shin Soo Choo)?
Steve Adams
12:55
I think the demand for Minor will be great enough that they make a move. Lynn having 2.5 years left makes him a tougher piece to part with. Pence and Forsythe, as rentals, seem like easy moves if another team has interest. Trading Leclerc would be selling extremely low. I don't buy that there'll be huge interest in Santana, and Choo's contract remains problematic in any deal.

12:56
Is it time for the A's to give up on Barreto?
Steve Adams
12:57
He's 23, hitting well in Triple-A and still hasn't had a full-time look in the Majors. Not every prospect hits the ground running Ronald Acuna/Juan Soto style.

I don't think he should be off-limits in a trade, but there's no reason for them to be pushing him out the door based on fewer than 200 MLB plate appearances either.

Has Victor Robles overwhelmed, underwhelmed or just whelmed in his rookie season? Can we expect him to improve at the dish?
Steve Adams
1:00
Robles has been a slightly below-average hitter with above-average value on the bases, 10 DRS and an MLB-best 13 Outs Above Average in the outfield. He's been plenty good all around, but I'd like to see him make more hard contact than he does to forecast substantial improvement.
That said, considering he's only 22, that could very well come with age and added strength.
