Let's start things up!

Please chart me a path back to relevance for KC. Eta on being competitive again?
Mark P
8:17
If everything breaks right, 2024.  Witt takes a step forward this year, a couple of the other young players establish themselves, Pasquantino continues to hit, Singer continues to pitch well, at least one of the young starters turns it around....if these items are checked off the list, KC can feel it has enough in place to perhaps start looking to add in 2024

Has Adalberto Mondesi made the complete transition from prospect to “suspect”?
Tanner
8:17
Any indications of whether the Royals will tender Mondesi a contract?
Mark P
8:19
Picollo didn't address the idea the other day, instead talking about how he viewed Mondesi as part of the 2023 roster.  But on paper, paying Mondesi $3MM might seem a touch steep considering that for all his potential, he has barely played much Major League ball
Mondesi would be signed in a heartbeat by another team if non-tendered, however, so I can see KC perhaps floating him in trade packages if they actually are open to moving on

Will the royals hire a general manager this offseason. Are we shooting to be competitive this year
Mark P
8:21
Picollo's promotion didn't come with a new "president of baseball ops" title, so he's technically still in his old role.  So it's possible they might promote one of the assistant to the GM job if Picollo becomes a PBO.

Or, it could be that ownership is maybe taking a wait-and-see approach to see if, say, James Click or David Stearns had interest in coming to KC

Could the Royals make a play for Sean Manaea?
Mark P
8:23
Steve Adams and Tim Dierkes actually both had KC getting Manaea, as part of their picks for the top 50 free agents list.  Projected for four years and $52MM, however, that seems a little steep for the Royals, especially for a guy coming off a shaky 2022.

Where does Nick Pratto fit into the Royals long term plans.?
Mark P
8:25
In theory, he and Pasquantino are the 1B/DH combo of the future, with Pratto getting the bulk of first base time since he's the better fielder.  Pratto's bat is still a question mark, however.

Wil Myers an option for a right handed bat?
Mark P
8:27
Myers returning to Kansas City after all these years would be amusing, and it's not a bad idea on paper.  I'm maybe a little more down on Myers than most, and if given the option between signing him or just giving the at-bats to VP, Pratto, or the right field options, I think I'd prefer to just stay in house

Any chance I get called up to the big squad next year?
Mark P
8:28
Since you've yet to even reach high-A ball, probably not

Trading Scott Barlow is the smart move right?
Mark P
8:30
It creates another hole in the bullpen, but if teams are willing to give up something significant for him, it does indeed make sense.

Shouldn’t the Royals be looking to leverage their strength in hitting development along with fixing their pitching development? Perhaps a trade for a bat that’s struggled the last couple of years but has impact potential? Looking at you Ketel Marte…
Mark P
8:31
The jury is still out on whether hitting development is a "strength," to be fair.  The D'Backs also just locked up Marte to an extension, he isn't going anywhere

Are there any rumors on what the royals will do with Hunter Dozier?
Mark P
8:32
I'm not sure there's much they can do, since his trade value is pretty negligible right now.  Something like attaching Barlow to Dozier in a trade might work, but watering down Barlow's trade value just to unload money doesn't make a lot of sense.

8:34
If all goes well this year, do we see some early career extensions for some? Singer, Witt, Pas
Mark P
8:35
Witt and Singer perhaps moreso than Pasquantino, but surely the Royals will test the waters on extensions for a lot of the players they already know are part of their core
Mack
8:35
How will the Royals decide where to field their young players? Does MJ split time at C & OF? Who’s playing SS/3B?
Mark P
8:36
It seems like Melendez will mostly be in the outfield or at DH, rather than a true "backup catcher."  The Royals are looking for another veteran minor league depth type, perhaps to act as the real backup for Perez.
8:37
Witt will get the first shot at shortstop, but a move to third base by 2024 isn't out of the question if he struggles defensively.  This is another reason why 2023 is still a wait-and-see rebuild year for the Royals.....they have some young pieces in place, but aren't necessarily sure where the pieces best fit just yet
Samuel
8:38
The Jays could use a lefty bat. How about a prospect-for-prospect deal -- Pratto for Moreno? Who hangs up?
Mark P
8:38
Toronto hangs up.  Moreno's ceiling is a lot higher, and Pratto isn't a need for the Jays since Vlad Jr. is already at 1B
Memphis Raines
8:38
What do you think the Royals would be looking for if they were to trade Mondesi?
Mark P
8:39
Mondesi can't have much trade value, so perhaps nothing more than another ex-prospect in need of a fresh start, or some other flier-esque return
Jeff K.
8:40
Why is a team like the Royals considered "small market", and therefore limited in payroll spending and splashy free agency moves, and yet on the other side of the state you have St Louis--a city that is constantly in play for large transactions. Surely it's not based on population... considering almost 200k more people live in KC. So what is it?
Mark P
8:42
STL ownership has been traditionally more willing to spend, and the Cardinals had about 70 years to establish themselves before the Royals even came onto the map.  Plus, as one of the most successful franchises in MLB, the Cards have a bigger national fanbase, more local interest, etc.

What are the chances Staumont is a Royal next year?
Mark P
8:43
I think they'll keep him.  Just my speculation, but Staumont is the kind of pitcher the Royals might think would thrive under a new pitching coach

Any plans to improve starting pitching/plan for Brady Singer?
