Amanda, thanks for mentioning the BirdCast website. I never knew that many birds were flying through Virginia at night. Fascinating. I don't think I've ever seen any of those birds in Norfolk they say pass through, but its cool to know they may be up there.

Does anyone have loaded pecan trees this year? I have one tree that is drooping with 3, 4 & 5 nut clusters. More 5 nut clusters than I have ever seen on it. The last time it was like this the squirrels ate all day constantly. I went out to lock up one night and I could hear nuts cracking. I got a flashlight and looked and there were six pairs of Raccoon eyes looking down at me. I never got a pecan, critters were working on it around the clock!

Loved your observations re: your pecan tree KP in ORF. Maybe the racoons will be too chubby to shimmy down chimneys! My manners, a huge thanks to SalGal's loving family for yet another cam dedication in her memory. And a DO remember her! As Ursus will tell you I am always listening to a book as I garden, houseclean, make jewelry, etc. I have learned so much during these times.

What a morning I've had! Had to run to the store and saw this bird sitting on a fence post. When I tried to get a pic, it moved to a nearby tree! I've never seen a leucistic Red Tailed Hawk before! Beautiful bird!

Oh, on an important matter, (to me) I got the Update on Ozzy and realized I needed to reup my Sponsorship. I kept trying but couldn't get it to go through!! Could someone help me? ALSO, I wanted to mention how much I LOVED his update by Alison!! The pictures, drawings and all the special parts were Outstanding. The Molting s'cap of Ozzy was so cute but also sad. I just love him. So glad he is doing so well with Amanda.

Well I was finally able to re-adopt Ozzy for another Year. AND I watched the Caring for Critters Video that is in that page and You get to see ALEX!! I miss him. But also Connor is in it AND Amazing Amanda!! It is so good.

Pecan tree report from Madison County, VA. We have three large pecans in our yard. This year's crop seems ... okay. In Virginia, I think that a good pecan crop means that there should be a good crop of native hickories, which is good news for bears. I think.

In our yard, the pecans are mostly harvested by crows and squirrels [including some squirrels that are likely descendants of some Wildlife Center-released squirrels]. Also helping herself is a very fat Groundhog.

Hey, Big Bear. How good to see you!! Great to hear that your Pecan Harvest can go well. Have you considered putting nets around the trees? They do that in some Texas Pecan Farms.

Hmmm, always learning something new here! I never associated pecans with groundhogs. I thought they ate plants/grubs, and such. Thanks Big Bear for the info!

The creatures are welcome to the pecans in our yard. The pecans are pretty small ... and, unlike the wildlife, I have access to pecans at the Food Lion.

Big Bear, thanks for the pecan update. Nothing seems to be eating mine yet. I'll keep an eye out for crows. I hope the groundhog is not climbing the tree. Any whole pecans i see on the ground are no good.

After attempting to grow peppers this year, like Big Bear said, I am able to go to the store and purchase decent ones. Pine cones are a source of food for the squirrels at my house.
