Tim addressed that in the top 50 post. It seemingly takes the Dodgers off the table, which is significant, but he still has lots of possible suitors and is still every bit as talented as ever.

I was a little surprised with the new contract Upton signed with the Angels... I thought he would have gotten more than that.  Does that set a tone for the type of deal JD Martinez can expect?

It reflects a little apprehension on the Upton camp's part, perhaps, about how the market would go. But also maybe he just really liked it there and was glad to take a slight discount to make it happen.

As for JDM, I don't think it does much. It takes one piece off the board as well as one suitor. That was going to happen regardless. The money will be determined by whether there's a bidding war ... which we kind of expect. JDM rakes.

We still have him earning quite  a lot, but I think it's the kind of thing that could scare off a few teams and perhaps prevent a wild bidding war that could really drive up his price tag.

Thing is, what do they really need? And are they willing to just blast past the luxury tax line? I'm not convinced they are definitely going to add a big name. But I think they will dabble and be opportunistic.
Also don't sleep on Mike Rizzo on the trade market. He has pulled off some beauties in the past and will be on the hunt.

Why have the Braves been fooling themselves/their fan base trying to add a controllable starter when they are nowhere near contention? It seems to me like that last month of 2016 was a way too-overblown.

It has been kind of overblown for like 2 years. But the fact is, the Braves are in a spot where the tide could turn fairly quickly -- we just don't know how soon and how well the talent will translate to the majors.

Now, we also dont have a very firm idea what kind of course they'll take since we don't even know who'll run the team. The fact that they are owned by a public corporation, rather than a rich individual, also matters I think.

Do you really think Theo goes away from the "no long extensions for a pitcher" and signs Darvish?  Seems like a desperate move as the window to win is closing fast in Chicago...

We had a lot of teams as "sure that's possible" on Darvish. But my view is that Theo says just what most front offices do about spending on pitching. He already paid up for Lester and went after Price, so it's not as if they haven't ever done it.

LoMo was the last guy we nailed down. He is a tough one to pick, honestly.
I don't think any of us totally loves that particular scenario, but ... you have to come up with something that seems plausible to you and go with it.

He is discussed at length, at the end. But no prediction, it's true ... good luck choosing. Nobody knows what he is really thinking or whether he is coming, so it's sort of a fool's errand at this point.

Could be wrong about that, but it makes it hard to imagine. Obviously I doubt it just means they won't have any interest, no matter what. But will they pursue and possibly go the extra mile? That's what we are looking for.
