The Phillies spent around $60MM on one-year veterans last year (via trade and FA). They can spend, no problem. Nothing in future commitments except the Odubel contract. And they can take the health risk on Tanaka. Need to build out the rotation and they want to begin competing. They played very well in the second half, which I don't want to over-credit, except it also included a monster debut for Hoskins and some really promising work from other young players (OFers, catchers, especially).

Rays have picked up Eovaldi option, btw. Need to call a quick timeout!

Realistic number that could keep machado in Baltimore this off-season. 10/350?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
That's a number he'd have to think about. Who knows what he and agent would actually think, though.

6/160 for a #3 starter who you can't pitch in the playoffs?   Thats gotta just be click bait, right??
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
How could that even be clickbait? It isn't something we are dangling in the headline.
3:21
If you don't agree, fine, but Darvish has been one of the best dozen or so pitchers in baseball (spitballing) since he broke into the league. He's not that old. And we are guessing he'll earn something like the Lester contract plus inflation. It's way shy of Price/Scherzer money.
Giants
3:22
Carlos Gomez better fit for the giants than LoCain? Likely, less upside, but also significantly less risk in contract necessary to land him and could be a stop gap until a few of the giants (hopeful) OF prospects come up. What do you think?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Seems plausible, sure. I imagine teams have strong feelings on Gomez, though, and I am not sure how SFG view him.

Thoughts on Anderson extension? Should Stearns try to lock up Nelson at a point when cost certainty might be important to him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Looks like a fantastic deal for the team. I don't want to slam a player at all for taking life-changing money, so don't read it that way. Just ... they basically guaranteed one extra season of arb eligibility and got two reasonably priced option years.
So they add some cost control, get control over a FA year, and don't really promise all that much more than what they would have anyway. Good risk.

Is the window on the Cubs closing fast? I wouldn't think so. Do you?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Nah. They have some openings and things to consider, but it's not closing.
3:26
Plus, they did just play in the NLCS. It's easy to overreact but this team's downturn season after a WS win was still pretty good.

Why hasn't anyone hired Tom Emanski to a coaching job yet?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
I have him on a $200K exclusive retainer to teach some good old fashioned fundamentals to my three-year-old son.
3:28
But seriously ... father-son ball has been amazing! The boy really tries and he can swing it a little bit. When he hits one well off the tee he calls it "rocket style," ha!

What starters (besides Darvish per your top 50 list) am I going after?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Cobb seems like a solid possibility.
Mike
3:29
If Hendricks is the ace, why would you spend that amount of money on Darvish to be your #4 starter?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Teams dont think about pitching that way. Remember when the Nationals signed Scherzer despite already having an excellent rotation?
Nj

Should the Pirates deal Cole?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
They should definitely explore that seriously, but don't need to pull the trigger unless they really get overwhelmed. I still think PIT can bounce back in 2018, fwiw.

Starting pitcher Colorado should pursue in trade? A name, not a vague description
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Well I'd give you one if I thought they were going to do so in earnest. But I think they might just pretty much roll with what they have on hand and possibly look into some trade possibilities. Who's the last outside starter they gave a guaranteed deal to, Kyle Kendrick?
3:32
But if you must have a name: Wade Miley.
There.
That's my bold pick for the Rox.

The FA Predictions has Cain and maybe Kendrik, does this Rule out Stanton with the Giants?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Putting aside contracts and such, a Span-Pence platoon would be sensible given their recent levels of play. But it doesn't seem terribly likely, so signing Cain might mean bowing out on Stanton (or might be a reaction after he lands elsewhere).
I do wonder whether it's wise for them to pursue Stanton given the financial situation they have coming.

Dyson to Pirates is interesting...is he 4th OF or a Cutch replacement?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
Could be either, I suppose!

3:35
You always say Dodgers have "their own ideas" but you have them not signing any SP, signing one low-level RP, and not trading for a bat.  Is their own idea to keep the same team minus darvish, watson, cingrani, and morrow?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Who said "not trading for a bat"?
Also ... this was a really good team! All the guys leaving via FA were midseason acquisitions or (in Morrow's case) a minors signing that made good. They will still have those options available even if they do nothing else.
3:36
Remember too they didn't even have Bellinger at the MLB level to open the 2017 season.
And Alex Wood wasn't Alex Wood.
Of course Urias wasn't busted up either.
